When people have been through a long history of trauma, they sometimes reject any chance of happiness. They will push it away and sabotage it. They do not believe they deserve it. Sometimes, when they accept it, they will later drive it off, thinking its too good to be true. It's a massive incorrect fight or fight response. In Kyos case it's because he doesn't think he is capable of being loved or capable of being a good person to love.

it's so sad when he goes, "why did i wish to spend my time with her? if this is the result, i wish i weren't with her." i believe he says that because he loves her, but he didnt want tohru to love him back. he didnt want her to also get hurt in the end. to love someone so much you dont want them to love you back, that hurts so bad.
