Kyokushin still blows my mind! People compare it to kickboxing without gloves, but I don't think this comparison adds up. The stance is completely different, the rules also have an impact on the fighting strategy. Kyokushin has this extra aspect of pain resilience. These guys literally absorb these body punches like punching bags, which makes them super resilient and hard as rock. This again refers to one of the core training principles of karate. Karate is truly badass 😎 🥋

The main difference in Martial Arts styles comes within its students... If you chose a martial art to win a street fight feel free to chose your matching style. If you chose a martial art which also teaches you philosophy, mental strengh and harmony in all the little aspects in your live then go ahead and chose your style! None of the martial art styles will protect you 100% nor will fail to defend you! I learned many years Shotokan and it helped me developing a sense for my behaviour and manners- in the last 10 years i never had to strike down someone or defend myself because im mentally and physically ready but not provoking or looking forward to fight. I still respect the "hard" styles like Muay Thai and stuff but for me its more a sport and not a philosophy like many japanese styles.

I'm sad to say that every bad training partner I've ever had (cranking on joint locks after the bell and stuff like that) were trained in arts that use a lot of formalities for respect. The guys that used no formalities showed respect by keeping their training partners safe. I suppose those who think that respect is more about superficial formalities than it is about looking out for their training partners' well being also chose a style that matches that attitude.

***** Completely depends on skill level difference. You see it in UFC all the time. If a stand-up fighters take-down defense is solid, he can force the grappler into his game. Also works vice-versa. To say an art is useless against any other specific one is pure speculation and "what if?" hypotheticals. Look at guys like Lyoto Machida. For the longest time Muay Thai and BJJ were considered the only things you'd want for a fight. Now you got guys who are versed in stuff like Karate and TKD pulling moves way outta left field and making them work because nobody expects them. It's happening more and more often, and those fighters who can be creatively flexible are generally the ones that win. I believe it was Dan Inosanto that said, "Anything can work if you can make it."

From what I know, Karate is made as a weapon, to take your opponent down as fast as possible, what you see on this video isn't everything you learn, there are "hidden" techniques such as eye-pokes, throat grapplings, ball grapplings, breaking knees, elbows and such, it's much more brutal if you study it, it wasnt made for competition but to survive, and in a street fight, a Karate guy wouldnt give his techniques away and wait for a counter strike instead, block one of two attacks is all that is needed, most people on the street will just swing at you so if you master the technique of blocking and striking you'll make yourself come out alive in most situations, but it's always better to run if you can.
@estrnscholar536010 жыл бұрын
what you said is exactly right. Competition is "fun" but the aim and purpose of martial arts, is really to kill people. Any martial arts are far from being something you wished came in handy, they have been invented in times of war for times of war.

No it is not. You are just being bias because you probably trained in Kyukushin. You are mesmerized perhaps by the continiuos punching to the body and then follow-up by a kick to the head. I am sure that the opponents have that continuous punching because their target is the torso which they can endure the impact and so they can withstand and keep punching with each other; but I am sure that if punches will be allowed to the face, that continuous punching will not happen because once you are hit strongly at the face , surely, you will step back or withdraw discontinuing your punches or even stunned or knockouted.

+Sherbet_Bomb Because its the hands who need protection
@andyreasoner52898 жыл бұрын
+Sherbet_Bomb Yes it's interesting. There can be several reasons: 1. punching are easier and generally aimed at face, so consequences of even very weak punch are then "visible". It would make normal trainings very problematic. I know that Masutatsu Oyama in the beginning allowe his students to punch to fac during sparings/fights. The result was fatal, cause number of face injuries made big absence of the students (in karate hands are very powerfull - e.g. tameshivari shows that factor). Try to imagine hitting with finger into the eye for example... 2. In kyokushin (full contact) karate hands are without boxing gloves, what strongly influences what I wrote in point 1. Therefore kyokushin created special tournaments called K1, where punches to head are allowed but all fighters have to use the boxing gloves. BTW: In the beginning of those tournaments (open for other styles like box too) karate fighters had been using during fights their traditional karatega outfit. Now all (unfortunately) fights in boxer shorts. Regards.
@vamtheanomaly8 жыл бұрын
Increases difficulty. If punching to the head were allowed, thats all anyone would do. They DO have kyukoshin tourneys like this where head punching IS allowed though. Its pretty brutal too. However I do agree that I dont care for this type of fighting. For one all of those kicks to the head are allowed because fighters are trying to low kick and torso punch each other. This leads to the bad habit of dropping the hands OFTEN. If a fighter like that was to spar someone of a different form, especially a punching style they would eat a left hook to the face. Not saying these guys arent tough by no means, but it reminds me of TKD fighting.
@Legionzzzz17 жыл бұрын
Well in Kyokushin when you punch someone in the face it's incredibly powerful more so then a kick almost you can easily kill someone or break something. Especially when you take into account that the traditional dojo's train like they did during oyama's reign where they hardened their fists to the point were the skin is like armor and the bones are as hard as stone. I mean these guys can punch a tree with full force and power and it won't even harm them. And they can chop actual stones and small boulders in half Imagine if one of those guys hit someone in the nose or the forehead, face, what exactly do you think would happen? I can tell you it would not be pretty.
@hongvankhangtruong96297 жыл бұрын
if head punch was allowed, they would predictably go for head punch KO all the time (you can see Kyokushin fighters fight kick boxing, their head punches are as deadly as any boxer at the same weight). the fight will go more aggressively, but less techniques
@smilyte12 жыл бұрын
well, 10kblades is kinda right about his comment. Since punches into the head are not legal in kyokushin, what happens naturally is focusing punches onto the body. That in return lowers the standard position of your arms therefore makes you unable to react fast enough to the head kick, which so happened to be perfectly legal and quite powerful. Head has a lot of sensitive points and touching it almost anywhere with a little more pressure is just plain painful.

Because Mas Oyama considered it a cheap thug tactic. Anyone can punch to the face, but delivering kicks to the face and head in various ways take skill. I trained in Kyokushin Karate for about almost 10 years, from 1993 to 2002, and the head and face is no less conditioned, not that there is much you can do to condition the face or head, as it more has to do with your own anatomical structure. Some people are just built to take more punishment to the head than others.
I remember when i was a 9 year old kid trying to fight a 13 year old and he said I dont want to hurt you I know tae kwon do, I tried to get closer then boom , I was sitting on the ground crying because he kicked me in the face with his foot. Because the MMA is a poor copy with many less technique and speed, the mma fighters are a muscle mountain, and they don't train, hit with fast, in kyokushin is not unusual see fat guys hitting and kicking super fast, the MMA is a comercial company, The karate: shotokan, kyokushin, shito- ryu , etc, are MARTIAL ARTS.

The best UFC/MMA fighter in the world is George St-Pierre and he is a Karate Master. Karate works very well in MMA. You may need to learn some BJJ as well to defend yourself on the ground.

Not seen the program but then I'm UK based and we only get a limited slice of US programming. Starting at 37..... You may find that you start to get bored with Karate. That or the stretching may take it's toll. If you do (and you can find somewhere to train) have a look at the empty hand Filipino systems (Panantukan, Kali etc) as they are very direct but have a fluidity in their training methods that prevents boredom - and they're mainly hands so limited stretching.

True Karate is the real way of killing, it's too dangerous for ppl to sports use. So, Firstly they hove to learn the way that not to kill and allowance. Don't hearm other, and make strong one's heart.

If that were true, more karate practitioners would be successful in limited-rules competitions.

I love Kyokushin Karate, it's blunt, linear, precise and focused, but for some reason they have zero guard for the head and face area, and they're not trained to protect it at all, and ironically it's where 90% of the knockouts happen. Such a bizarre sport!

I trained it for few months. I can’t take the punching. But and that’s why I have great respect for full contact karate. It trains you the most important thing , spirit. Or in plain language , be brave in the face of furry of punches. Honestly, you can have thousands of techniques from Kung fu , bjj or what not. But If you freak out , you can t pull shit off!

Kyokushin doesn't elude, the reason these guys are getting taken down is because they aren't stepping into the kick for a variety of reasons. The key to defending the axe kick and similar is to step into it so they can't get full extension and then sweep them for a half point. (Forgetting the japanese for the term atm)

This is just competition, guys. Kyokushin Kai, like all Karate styles have hand punching to the head techniques too. Same for Shotokan. The competitions don't allow all techniques but it doesn't mean that the techniques missing in competition are not learned in the dojo. Martial arts are not made for competition. "Martial art" means "techniques of war". There are techniques made to kill the opponent. The competitions are just an approach of the disciplines.

@TheAndreyBelkov that's because this is a highlight clip of specifically knockouts by spin heel kick, also in traditional kyokushin knockdown the only attacks to the head are kicks because it's bare knuckle
@samuraialfredo12 жыл бұрын
@Rastamut Face punching isn't banned in Karate, but since this is full contact without any protection other than a cup and mouthpiece you can't allow face punches. Otherwise matches would end extremely fast most of the time.

I respect all forms and the dedication involved. I have trained in many different forms and have taken my own style from it. Street fight are a completely different thing. It's raw and vicious. Throat punches. Spine elbowing. Groin kicks. Make sure you go home. Or make sure you don't get in one. Have a great day.

Is there a name for the technique when you spin and throw a head kick. I’m not talking about the normal ones, where they chamber their legs and throw side kicks after the spin. I’m trying to find out what it means when you spin and hold the leg chambered but instead you come all the way around and throw a headkick while spinning the other way?. hope that made some sense
@baldieman6412 жыл бұрын
Well I don't know. I'm quite a bit older than they are but I did teach martial arts for over 20 years and have studied ju jitsu, muay thai, kali etc. I've had my share of battles. Not that that means much. Street fights are more about judging the situatuiion and acting decisively or reacting appropriately that they are about facing off mano et mano and slugging it out - although I've done that too. Even if I were the worlds worst street fighter it wouldn't invalidate my argument though.

kyokushin karate style was devised by mas oyama. .from his two books what is karate and this is karate the kicks demonstrated were the common and traditional kicks- front, side, back, roundhouse and stomping kicks. .nowadays kyokushin developed and/ or adopted variations like the ax kick and reverse round house( bruce lee termed it dragon whipping its tail). .these two last kicks were non existent during mas oyama's time. .it was never illustrated in his two books. .it could be one of his followers had invented the ax kick. . and copied or incorporated into karate bruce lee's deadly reverse roundhouse as seen first time in the movie the big boss. .this kick shocked moviegoers for it was never portrayed on the screen before its deadliness by well knowned chinese martial artists and actors the likes of popular wang yu, chen xing, chen kuan tai and few others who were mostly belonged to southern style of chinese boxing(70-80% hand movements). .

I trained in Kyokushin, then Enshin for extended period of time, then switched to Muay Thai. The MT guys would always argue about the MT low kicks being more powerful than the Kyokushin (traditional and NOT Brazilian low kick) In my experience and my opponents experience lol the Kyokushin style low kick is A faster, B more “cutting edge” when compared to a MT low kick. And I am not taking anything g away from a MT kick. They are also very powerful. Anyone here with MT exp want to know the difference lmk. (It’s all about the setup and the left foot btw) 😜

the thing with this is that they're hands are down b/c they don't have to worry about getting punched to the face....so their guard is low to protect the body shots... If they put on gloves and (maybe a headgear) and punch to the face, then their guards would be up. So when the spin kick comes (or any head kick), they are more prepared for it. Their hands are already protecting their chin.
@Stre3tboyz11 жыл бұрын
Hi, when I first knew kyokushin, I was thinking the same like you. But try this martial art! Its great in terms of fitness, philosophy and your body become really tough as no gloves are being used! If you want punch on the face, rather wear gloves because (empty hand) bare hand really causes many injury on the face. JUST DO IT i'm lovin' Kyokushin OSU!

It's the karate stance that allows them to throw these fancy knock out kicks. Their hands are too outwards and low, and the lack of foot work too leaves them open. Karate has a pretty stay put stay in form stance that makes you a stationary target. A Muay Thai boxer with his hands up higher and closer to his head plus a more bouncy more fluid footwork will evade or block these fancy karate kicks much easier. Most importantly the often use of Muay Thai push kick / teeps will keep a karate martial artist away at a distance and not give them the opportunity to throw these fancy spin kicks.

@HandsomeFighter1 Obviously you havent seen what happens in bareknuckle fighting when you punch to the face and head. Lots of cuts and broken hands. Kyokushin guys are perfectly able to adapt when you put on gloves as most of train both ways.

Those spinning ushiro geris to the stomach are so fucking brutal. You know it hurts when a kyokushin blackbelt goes to his knees by it.

I've always thought of Kyokushin to be quite sloppy, after seeing this though theres definitely no doubting the power and effectiveness of the kicking techniques used.

Those spinning back kicks had huge telegraphs besides a few of them the fact they telegraphed that hard means they put everything into that kick anticipated kicking through a block...ouch well more like zzzzz

@locohellraiser - Flexibility helps a lot. I am trying for over 10 year, I am not that flexible. Some of the kicks you see here don't actually require too much flexibility. the spinning heel kicks do require it . Also you get flexible in time, some faster some slower.

@333metalfan Yes and No. Some arts are 'technically" more proficient than other arts. But, at the same time if the follower of a particular Dojo, Dojang or Kwoon does not represent that art well in application against his opponant to its fullest then there it is. Sport TKD is "technically" not as proficient as Kyokushin and that is a fact. One cannot take something that is meant to be a tap-tap sporty dance and expect to think it will work as well on the street.

I think the "other kick" the Title is talking about is the Crescent Kick (Mikazukigeri Moto). Or the Axe kick. It's kinda hard to tell for me.
