The thing you ate on a stick is called mitarashi dango, and the sauce is a sweet soy sauce. I never thought barbecue sauce when I eat it though LOL
@TalesFromOurPocket2 жыл бұрын
It definitely reminded us of a sweet barbecue sauce but I can see how it would have been soy sauce instead! 😊

The three rice balls on a stick is mitarashi dango - rice dumplings essentially, in sweet soy sauce glaze. Also, about sake (not saki), you pour and/or refill for each other but not yourself. You pour for your companion and then your companion pours for you.

Aw shoot, we messed up the sake pouring! (and apparently the spelling of it, too - I'm noy sure which one I'm more embarrassed about 😳). Thanks!!

Thank you for your video. I am Japanese and surprised at new discoveries from foreigners' point of view.

Haha, yeah - we were not expecting the rice balls to be savory. We thought they would be sweet! 😁😁

There's sweets called Ohagi, which are rice balls covered with sweet red bean paste. It's also delicious! Try it!

my goodness. I was there two weeks ago on December 3rd at this very temple - Kiyomizu-dera even the streets that were shown in this video. The crowd situation was out of control like I can't even walk at all. 85% of people were locals; 15% were foreigners
@TalesFromOurPocket2 жыл бұрын
Oh wow, so a lot more foreigners are there now! It will only continue to increase, I think. 😁

I love Kyoto, too. 🥰 Did you eat Yudofu(湯豆腐🍲)? 🤤
@TalesFromOurPocket2 жыл бұрын
I can't be sure, but Yudofu looks like something we ate when we were in Mt Koya! So...maybe?!
@あいうえお-o6s1f2 жыл бұрын
@@TalesFromOurPocket Thank you for reply. Probably what you ate in Mt.Koya was Koya-dofu. Yudofu is a hot pot dish that you can eat near Nanzenji(南禅寺) in Kyoto.
@TalesFromOurPocket2 жыл бұрын
Oh, we definitely did not have that but it sounds delicious! Next time!

@@TalesFromOurPocket Yudofu is the best in cold season. Please try it next time.

Those are students on their school trip , study about history of Kyoto. They come from all over Japan.

School trips are much better in Japan than in the US, we think! 🙂

Japanese students usually go to Kyoto in their second year of high school as a graduation trip. Kyoto is a city of cultural value, so students from all over Japan head there. Autumn is the most popular season, but students often visit in spring and other seasons. Most of them are in Osaka, Nara and Kyoto. There are also schools that go overseas or to Hokkaido.

An overseas trip with a school class sounds like such a great learning experience for kids. What a great opportunity!!
In Japan today, there is a financial subsidy from the government for travel support, so it may be a time when Japanese people move a lot. However, this seems to be less than usual.

Less than usual? Wow!!

Mitarashi dango. Sauce cooked down with soy sauce, sugar and potato starch.🍡
As you may know, If you can't find a toilet, many convenience stores will lend you an employee toilet for free. (It's polite to buy something, but it's okay if you don't buy anything.) "Toile wo kashite kuremsuka?"
@TalesFromOurPocket2 жыл бұрын
We did not know that!! Thank you for telling us. 😊😊
Key Yo Toe 🚫👎 Kyo Toe ✅ 👍🏽 No worry it’s not just you most people mess this up. Key Yo is correct for Kiyomizudera… notice the difference in spelling kyo vs kiyo. Mitarashi Dango 🍡 is Mochi and Sweet Soy Sauce glaze. One more and I’ll stop. It’s Saké 🍶as in Sah Kay not Sah Key 🔑 Great video, not trynna harsh your melon but I’d be a bad Japanese Major to not share 😇

We really appreciate the pronunciation help! Although I don't think *anything* was going to help me with Kiyomizu-dera. 😂😂😂
