As someone who did the Rose Parade, Rose Parade Bandfest and pre-parade Disneyland marching band in high school years ago, (ahem, too-many years ago), I can tell you this is one of the best high school bands I have ever seen. There are some dudes in there, but this is serious girl power.🔥 The ladies (and guys) make it look easy, but don’t underestimate the true level of difficulty. You have to practice and audition a lot to make the Rose Parade cut, and even good high school bands will be challenged to sound this awesome while simply sitting down in a band room. To play a wind-powered instrument, march and not break off early at the end of stanzas, you need 200 percent of your seated lung capacity. Add aerobic dance moves and you need massive lung capacity. Plus, every time these young people jump, they have the potential to take the instrument mouthpiece out-of-position on their mouth. Then, there is the music and movement memorization for not just this, but everything they will play and do in the band season. Watch the fact that no heads bounce in straight parade. This is a very specific marching step that can be a calf burner in the heel-to-toe roll over long distances. The fact that this band sounds as good as they do while doing all the things above is insane. Some issues with line spacing and coming out of moves in phase and on the right foot, but this is the high school best of the best. Hearing that front brass power produced by all ladies is truly🔥. And they sing! Props also to the guys and one lady that are jumping with heavy Sousaphones (25+ pounds if they are brass). You rocked it Kyoto!
@ray-h721513 күн бұрын
You nailed it. The physical regimen for all this lung power is intense. And these high schoolers volunteered and auditioned to go thru all this - being just an extracurricular club. You're right. Their season repertoire is massive - memorization of music scores and choreography, with all the social parades, concerts and competitions - they perform exceptionally. And on top of all this, their school work. I did DCI for a year and I thought that was grueling, but to do it for 3 years continuously (in Japan's heat and humidity).... These guys are super-human!

@@ray-h7215 Hi You and the comments before you have put the whole thing in perspective in what 40 hrs of their time over days a week produces. I read comment from some of the retirees of the band past, saying, those 3 years, it was their family, as they spent so much time together, than at home. Now that’s what you call dedication on an another level. The future is bright the future is Orange 🍊

@@Dodger0103 This is true. My core group of friends in high school were in the band, drill team and flag/rifle corps because we all went everywhere together. it is work, but also a lot of fun. The high school people I am still in touch with a lot of years later are mostly from those groups. Here is what Rose Parade morning is like: after doing Bandfest (29th and 30th), Disneyland parades and having limited free time at Disney on the 31st, it is an EARLY call January 1. (You have not stayed up until midnight for the new year). You quickly get ready, bus down to the staging area (which is a closed off portion of the freeway), and march up to two miles before you even see the start of the parade route. All the TV cameras are in the first 1/2 mile after the band negotiates a 130 degree intersection turn, which you actually have to train for because it's only in Pasadena. You kick butt for the cameras and feel awesome about it. But the whole parade is 5.5 miles. Halfway though you are dehydrated because you didn't want to march the parade and have to pee. You don't know where you are and how much is left, but you can hear the crowd cheering, so you keep going... all the while living for the between-song moments of drum cadence to focus and catch your breath for what's next. At the end, you are completely done. You take water, change into street clothe (if you can find yours) in some random room setup for that, and sleep immediately upon sitting down in the coach bus. Even at high school age, it's an endurance test and the longest parade you will ever march and play in. Special to the Kyoto band: they had to travel to/from Japan, and are doing everything on a 17-hour time difference. Smiling every moment. They will remember it forever.

Only half of the band in the 2025 Rose Parade appearance were active high school students and the other half were graduates from 2020 and later. They were asked to participate to make the band bigger in size for a grand venue like this. That would explain why there were some line spacing issues as the active high schoolers were able to practice with the graduates only for a few sessions together in the past month before the parade. The graduates now have their own lives and attend universities and many of them do not even continue to play music any longer. But they integrated so well and still kept up with the active high schoolers especially with all the difficult choreography you would think the whole band had practiced together for years. I'm so impressed and proud of everyone in the band.

Why they are so impressive: I've marched and played in a band in the Rose Parade twice (1963, 1965) and I can attest to it being a test of endurance and stamina. However, watching Kyoto Tachibana and how they perform, I am absolutely floored by how they can even do what they do (play music and dance at the same time and still sound so good) and amazed at how they can do it for the entire 5.5 mile length of the parade. ......and still be happy and smiling at the end. I was just exhausted and glad it was over. Other bands might do similar things or try to but this band is One of a Kind. IMO and others....... The MOST ENTERTAINING BAND in the WORLD.

I am deeply saddened by the devastating wildfire in Pasadena. My heartfelt condolences to all who have been affected. Wishing you strength and comfort in the days ahead. If the Rose Parade is held next year, I sincerely hope that the Kyoto Tachibana High School Band will be invited once again. As many already know, their exceptional performances have not only gained widespread recognition across the United States but have also been deeply loved and cherished by all. Their vibrant music and dynamic performances captivate everyone, inspiring courage and hope to live on. I truly believe that their energy and spirit will become a powerful force for recovery and revitalization in the Los Angeles area.

Tachibana will most likely be invited for the 2031/2032 Rose Parade
There is a Rose Parade policy that limits a foreign band's participation to only once every six years, thus Kyoto Tachibana's appearances in 2012, 2018 and now 2025. The extra year gap between 2018 and 2025 was due to the parade being cancelled in 2020 by the pandemic. I would like to see the policy eliminated but Kyoto Tachibana can't afford to come so often anyway. The Rose Parade committee does not provide any fundings at all other than extending the invitation. To make this trip for 200 people, the band did a crowdfunding and raised over $750k USD but that was only enough to cover 3/5 of the total expenses and the band members and their families had to cover the rest. The Rose Parade committee needs to share their wealth.
Even though all the bands invited to the Rose Parade Bandfest have earned their recognition to be there, l feel a little sorry for the bands that perform after Kyoto Tachibana. KT performances seems to always steal the show!

It's not specialized for musical arts, but their band is famous (obviously) and the way to get into Japanese high schools is to test in (an academic test, not a music test ;)). They have a sister band, Izumo commercial and you can also see some of their videos. The Japanese are interesting -- almost any generalization people usually make about them is both true and false at the same time. Yes, they're usually introverted, but in structured situations like this can be quite extroverted. There are MANY great videos of this band, but one of the ones I like a lot is this subtitled documentary that shows a lot of the "behind the scenes" -- as well as a stunning competitive performance. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYWkln-Xj9mdpdksi=TowJRU-8fkuW3xDS

They are regular high school students and the band is just an after-school activity club. But the band takes training and practice very seriously to the tune of over 50 hours seven days a week continuously all year round. In their three years of high school they only get a total of 15 days off so there is a lot of personal sacrifice. These teenagers are very dedicated and from their expressions, you can see that they all love to perform and share their joy with the audience. This band is loved around the world and called the best.

@@crzdbuckeye9406 Kyoto Tachibana SHS is famous for being able to produce great sound while performing difficult choreography at the same time. No other bands are even closed to their level. The after-school club is managed all by the students themselves and they make the decision on the songs list to play each year and then come up with the choreography to match. All high school bands in Japan target and hope to compete in the annual all-Japan marching contest and Kyoto Tachibana has won four consecutive gold medals in the past four years which it's an extraordinary achievement. They have also been invited by the Taiwanese government to perform in Taiwan the last two years in-front of the president and government officials.
