The amount of coordination and talent required is next level, and they are all extra curriculum (including the director being a volunteer).

In Japan, they'll often have a Junior High and Senior High School structure. Junior High, the US equivalent would probably be Intermediate School, with 7th to 9th grades. Senior High School consists of 1st Year (10th grade Freshmen), 2nd Year (11th grade Juniors), and 3rd Year (12th grade Seniors) students. Can you imagine, they "reload" 1/3 of their entire band every year versus some 4 year High School programs. The wind club is an extracurricular activity and they are dedicated to say the least. I won't expand beyond that as others have touched upon their training and history. TACHIBANA TENSION!!! 💛🧡🖤🧡💛 😁

KT shs band is from Japan. They were in California for the tournament of roses parade. Their 2nd appearance in the parade. They are known in Japan as The Orange Devils as they do quite well in marching competitions. They practice 7 days a week even on holidays. During summer break they have a 14 day camp and practice 11 hours per day. The choreography is designed by the students. Students have a say in the music selections. Some kids choose KT shs just so they can perform Sing Sing Sing. They wear light weight dance shoes for all performances no matter what surface they perform on. Concrete, grass, wood asphalt. They tried a bit heavier soled dance shoes but rejected due to the loss of feel. These kids are beasts (Stamina strength, endurance, skill) both musically and physically. The Rose Parade is 5.5 miles long. In 2012/ 2018 they danced their way through it sweat dripping from their faces. Music is planned with thought to give them time to catch their breath even though they are still playing. One floutist wears a prosthetic leg. She performs every step, routine. The gal playing the 37lb marching xylophone is about 4'11 and weighs perhaps 100lb. She did the 5.5 miles and never stopped smiling. Her nickname, Chippi. All incoming students are given nicknames by upperclassmen. The school band is typically around 100 members. In 2018 nearly 100 alumni joined the ranks and 200+ marched in the parade. To this day, years after graduating Chippi's favorite song remains Sing Sing Sing. During many small stage performances of SSS Chippi can be seen playing timbales with style and grace. The next thing you know she is pounding the life out of them. In 2025 I plan on being in Pasadena to see the spectacle that is the Tournament of Roses Parade. Kyoto Tachibana is suppose to be back. I hope I am alive to see it. Dan you didn't get to see a dancing band in the Macy's Parade but now you've seen one on film. Wait until you both see them doing the SSS kick step while flying down the street. I love your reaction to this. BTW I was a band jock in HS and I love their performances.

Barton A Thank you on the accurate information in your comment 👍 This school has one of the greatest school band in the world. And you mentioned, it is a High School. The kids join in first year students and leave as third year on completion of graduation. It is a club activity at the school, which is a huge testament to the kids in their work ethic. The most amazing thing is how they play so beautifully whilst dancing ( fantastic breathing control). The marching steps have to be an exact length and done on heel to toe. You need to see the video of them in the Bandfest at that time, it was a masterpiece of skill and flair. The whole audience stood to applaud them and then the march pass was a wow. It was the precursor to their Rose Parade performance which wowed crowds for five and half miles as mentioned. Also while they were there, they also did other appearances at rehabilitating centres and did a full concert in a charity for the firefighters lost in the recent forest fires. The future is bright the future is Orange 🍊

To be specific, thies if fromthe 2018 Rose Band appearance. They are from Kyoto Japan.. If this is the 2018 appearance, one of the flute players is missing the lower half of her right leg from birth and does the same dancing as everyone else.

That was great! I don't know about historical or cultural connections but for some reason there are a lot of Japanese musicians who play Swing and Trad Jazz. There's one group in particular (whose name escapes me at the moment) that I've seen at quite a few US jazz festivals who does a great Louis Armstrong inspired show.

Maybe you're referring to Tamana Girls High School Band which, in the past, often played at the Glenn Miller Festival in the US. Another Japan High School that's heavy on Jazz and also sounds awesome is the Kindai University High School Band. If you have not heard either, definitely worth the listen.

Hello, in order for Kyoto Tachibana High School to appear in the Rose Parade, Disneyland paid for the airfare of about 100 million yen from Japan for about 200 people. They are feared as orange devils by rival high schools because if they participate in the tournament, they will be swept away. It's such a great different dimension band. Thank you for the video.

The clue as to where they were from, is in their name, the ‘KYOTO’ Girls High School Band, plus the fact that they were also parading a Japanese flag alongside their banner, and that first number was the the famous 1930s Benny Goodman number Sing Sing Sing! They were over in the USA to take part in the famous Rose parade in Pasadena, California, where they ended up stealing the show!

Once again I am shocked at your response in the video 1 The band is Japanese from Japan 🇯🇵 2 They are from Kyoto City and are the Kyoto Tachibana Senior High School Band. 3 They were performing at Disney Anaheim in the Christmas Parade by invitation. 4 The band is 90% girls, only 12 boys, which very common in Japan, as it is a school club activity. The band is run by the students themselves and the third year are the leaders. They chose the choice of music to play ( assisted by the school MD, all the choreography is done by them. And I am sorry to tell you , but your college bands don’t hold a candle against them. The future is bright the future is Orange 🍊 P.S. You mentioned that you liked the flutes 🪈. One of the flute players is a girl named Kurara (nickname by the way), and was born with one leg and wears a prosthetic leg to be the band of her dreams.
