I only discovered the Kyoto Tachibana SHS Band this year (I turned 70 in November) and they have completely blown me away. What these (mainly) girls and boys do is superhuman. They never miss a beat, they never play a bum note and they never miss a step when they dance. I can only speak for myself but the joy they bring is immeasurable. I absolutely love them. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I'm Japanese but try to make comment in English for non Japanese speakers for more understanding this video. This film is performed by mainly 117the generation of Tachibana who are, unfortunately, very sad generation due to covid 19. Only one chance for marching at outside and only once chance for full performance at the stage when they were celebrated as graduation and farewell from Tachibana. However everybody can understand from this movie that Tachibana is still there and alive and never died . That is why next generation of 118th and 119th could get Gold awards at national marching contest. This video is the evidence that this generation have exactly transferred everything to successors what they have. Thank you so much for 117th generation of Tachibana and especially to Miss N as manager & Miss Makko as Drum manager. Hoping your success, full healthy and full happiness. Furthermore hoping to see you at the event of 2025 Pasadena Rose Parade.

Courtney, a little more info about the band, the senior 1/3 of the band retire in December to study for exams, a new 1/3 of first years join the band in April at the Blumen Hügel parade in school uniform, the next time we see them is in band uniform at Brass Expo in May :) Contests are in November so the new members have until then to build stamina, learn to march at EXACTLY 5 meters in 8 paces, one toe out is not good enough, and finaly to learn the routine. One of the first years in October is elected to be the future Drum Major when she reaches her senior year, when she will also organise the practices and training. In 2018 the band and 95 alumini took part in the 5.5 mile Rose Parade in California on New Years Day, they danced the whole route without breaking a sweat :)

The most amazing factoid to me is that the entire routine is student-driven. There is no adult in charge of choreography or choice of music. The one thing they always focus on, though, is Sing Sing Sing. That's what almost all of the students joined the band for: to learn "that dance" while they play. It's a major "hook" to join the school. They run a very democratic organization where the students lead the students, and they dream up all of the routines. In their spare time. It staggers my old brain. When I was their age, I was still trying to make a free throw in basketball.

One of the recent alumna, Sousaphone-player Yurumowa was interviewed on the GrooMe! channel by Mita-chan, the drummer from 2009 who went professional. (kzbin.info/www/bejne/rH2XgKqXZ7yImLs) She mentioned that the white Sousaphones weighed about 9kg each, that's about 20lbs. They've started replacing those with brass ones, which weigh 12.5kg, almost 28lbs. Now, put that in perspective, these kids aren't big by western standards, and I would say, might be 45-50kg. Then you realise they're not just lugging around 1/4 their weight in a musical instrument, but dancing with it. The white ones, being lighter, were easier to dance around in, but there's some footage from a TV show of their competition journey around 2011, where they showed the terrible state of disrepair that the instruments were in. I might guess is a result of the rigorous training these kids go through for their insane routines. Yuru-chan did say in that interview that her inspiration to join Kyoto Tachibana was during her junior high years seeing KT perform at the "Band Fest of 3000".

@@TheSledgehammer205 I have made the same observation: in many cases, the instruments are bigger than the girls. Long ago I watched a behind-the-scenes video of an older gentleman who had to be a grandparent of a band member. He was tasked with devising a means of putting all of these drums on some kind of harness. I believe the Tachibana drummer uses it to this day. But the translation said that the apparatus ended up weighing a total of about 22 kg if I remember correctly. Almost 50 POUNDS! And here's a 105 pound woman lugging that sucker around while she marches. I know they're young, but how do they do it???? Is there any wonder that most of the band looks absolutely gassed at the conclusion of Sing Sing Sing? I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who notices the incredible stamina required to do what the Tachibanas do.

@@demef758 Yup, I think that was on the same TV show about their journey to nationals. There's usually someone else helping the drummer on the special drumset after their arena performances. Anyway, their performances with the new sensei are a step in the right direction, a welcome change.

@とちはし Why or how? Why is because I find it fascinating that they can dance while blowing into their instruments. How is because like you, I have watched as many videos about them as I can find on YT. Unfortunately, as time passes, some videos get taken down, so you can't always find some of them today. How do high school kids manage to do what they do in their after school "club," while also being high school students (homework, etc.)? I also admire the leadership skills shown by the senior students as they drive the younger ones to do things they normally could not do. Their marching coach once said that if a third grader tells a first grader that she can fly, the first grader will sprout wings and fly. I believe that he was correct, too!

They was there in 2012 and 2018. the funny after 2012 performance, was the organizer got frustrated, almost irritated, when they found out that Tachibana wasn't returning the following year! They almost demanded them to return (basically, between the lines). Many of the Japanese band that comes to Rose Parade (with the help of the Green Band association) have aluminum from Tachibana making the dance/move routine for each parade. and if you are lucky and know them well, you can sometimes spot them in the group!

The word "burnout" gets tossed around a lot in American communities which have schools fielding competitive marching bands that have rigorous rehearsal schedules, sports games every week, competitions every week etc. The most demanding American school marching band schedule still doesn't even hold a CANDLE to what these kids are required to do. We're talking 20-30 hours of after school practice each week, all-day Saturday rehearsals every week, plus 20-30 different performances throughout the year. 10 hours per day during their entire summer break; these kids literally give up their entire LIVES in order to get to this level! It's almost olympic in magnitude!

The funny thing is, the top HS bands in America are still better than Tachibana with less rehearsal time. Since the rehearsals are shorter they are EXTREMELY fast paced and much more tiring compared to Tachibanas. The way some of these American bands rehearse are much more tiring and you HAVE to give the kid a break. Thats why we get burnt out. It’s impossible to rehearse as much as Kyoto in america with how much more physically demanding the shows here are

When they play Sing Sing Sing, the dance they do and has made them famous for this song and has been a part of their roots, is known as the Lindy Hop. They do this with particular ease, yet, has been what makes KT, KT. Became a fan in 2018 myself. And your reactions are normal. Some badass Marine I am, heh heh.

Courtney have you watched the video from Tachibana Otkau in your comments section. The person explains perfectly what the performance is about. As you touched on the visit to Disney, this is part of the full nearly two weeks they performed in various concerts, shows, parades and as they at Bandfest, which they won, against stiff competition. Once you click on that video, you see below a Bandfest video and then the Rose Parade video, All are incredible performances and the audience’s go crazy. The future is bright the future is Orange 🍊

Thanks Courtney for watching this and your emotions were appreciated. They are without doubt an incredible high school band students and your right they do practice around 40 hours a week to maintain their high standards. I am as you gather a massive fan of this band, but I will say there are a load more high school bands in Japan who are really good. Someone in the comments section has added a further video, these students went to the Rose Parade in 2018 in Pasadena and were in the video you were on the Disney parade. If you look closely are the start, one of the flute players, know as Kurara (nickname), had a prosthetic left leg So thank you again

She is now at University, but still gets involved in marching bands and is one of the Fire Angels coloured guards for the Kyoto Fire Service Band , along with other ex KT members and yes dancing as well. A huge inspiration to many 👏

The history of this band is fascinating and inspiring. I´m adding 4 links below that will tell you a lot about this school and the band and how this style of marching started. These videos follow the band and students during the years of 2011 and 2012. Each is about 15 minutes long and start with a bit of history some of which is repeated from 1 video to another but they each give information about the school, when the band was started and when the dance was introduced (by one of the students) into their performance and how hard they work to accomplish something that would seem, by many, to be impossible. This will give you an idea of just how talented these young people are (ages 15 to 17) and how the teachers allow the student´s creativity to improve the band and what the level of desire and willingness to work to learn and achieve their dreams. #1 - @ #2 - @ #3 - @ #4 - @

Courtney, I can't tell you how much I appreciate your appreciation of KT. I too often get teary-eyed at the performance of Japanese High school bands. Let me highly recommend Seika Girls for overall great work. Please also check out Tikigawa, Tamana Girls, Weysada Girls and my personal favorite for field shows - Narashino HIgh. You will also appreciate the stage shows of Izumo Business and Onishi Gakuen. Warning - once you start you will get hooked. In their own way all these band are equal to or exceed KT, though no one beats KT in a parade. Thanks for your tears of appreciation. There are many. many fine bands in Japan, now overall, much better than American High School bands.

Not only do they have to master all the choreography, but they also have to memorize their music, as well as keep up with their high school studies. They are such an inspiration for young people everywhere and worthy of emulation. The band's founder, professor Hisashi Hiramatsu (1935-2021) passed away last Saturday (03/13/2021). For those who do not know this is a school marching band! They are in the orchestra most of the time after school! They have physical fitness because every day everyone does fitness training for an hour and a half! There is training in the yard and then they take the tools down and it's not easy! For 3 years they are in a year orchestra! To be accepted the student must be an equally musician and master his instrument! In the first year they learn to get to know the orchestra and learn to walk properly. The training is very difficult. During the year many fall and only those who remain undergo a difficult examination and if passed get the uniform they have several types of uniform! Second and third year are the shows at many events in Japan! In the third year they are already mentoring the youngsters and also have their sons group leaders because every tool is in the group the teachers only helpers are the students!
