kyoutani backstory: contains reason for his behaviour
TW: bullying? and violence
Backstory
Kyoutani’s middle school had a volleyball club that did not get as much attention as Aoba Johsai has. The team-captain was a so called “pretty boy” who has more eye for his appearance and popularity then the sport. And he would boost about this every chance he gets, not caring for the underclassmen.
His coach was not the nicest man, more a traditional one. He started berating Kyoutani about behaviour-patterns as soon as Kyoutani joined the team. Telling him he needs to be though, strong and not cry or show weakness no matter what. This changed the way Kyoutani acted, because he would get scolded otherwise. This is also the reason why he behaves so aggressive all the time. People would critique him on every little detail, to the point that he sees critique as a bad thing rather than a tool to improve.
He didn’t like Oikawa at the beginning of his first year. Mainly because he resembled his previous captain quite a lot. Although he started to see the difference as time passed, he cannot change his behaviour towards the captain (or the team). Afraid of the consequences it might bear, like being seen as weak. Something he was previously mocked for.
Kyoutani still has some of his original behaviour-patterns within himself, mainly because he still acts like that at home (if he can controle it). However, as previously mentioned, it is hard and quite scary for him to do so. Convincing himself that he might lose people if he reverts back to his old self.
The term “drama club” is the way Kyoutani refers to his old volleyball club, reason being that the club taught him more acting than volleyball. And because his teammates had their priorities in their image and behaviour rather than volleyball and training.
Credits
The story of Kyoutani’s childhood and middle school is completely original (my opinion is based on research, please correct me if I am wrong). However, the idea to use the song Drama Club by Melanie Martinez is inspired by @hanu’z.
