This gentle man had a great voice and world-winning smile, he charted a song here displaying a beautiful happiness while like many of us wishing it would rain so he could go outside in the rain hiding his tears looking up, ever happen to you? So glad to be able to see and hear his lovely wife Yukiko Kashiwagi, who had been an actress--not only her but also Steve Allen, I'm a huge fan of his for many years. Thanks to folks like you, this song will never go away. Ever.

He and this song meant so much to me in my very-young life. My dad was away in Korea and I was broken-hearted. Just hearing this beautiful Japanese song made me smile and cry and always reminded me of my dad and that he'd be back. So much love sans interpretation. On August 12, 1985, Kyu Sakamoto died in the crash of Japan Airlines Flight 123, the deadliest single-aircraft accident in history, and the second deadliest plane crash in history behind the double Boeing 747 collision of the March 1977 Tenerife airport disaster. He is interred at Chōkoku-ji Temple in Minato, Tokyo.[7]

I have watched CGI replays of the last few minutes of flight 123. That crippled Boeing 747 went through wild gyrations as those pilots tried in vain to control the airliner but that was completely impossible due to complete loss of hydraulics. Those brave pilots fought the good flight to the end. I just wonder how horrifying it was for those pour souls on board. The had to know that they were going to die. So very sad for Mr. Sakamoto and the rest of the passengers. RIP Mr. Sakamoto as well as your fellow passengers and crew.

this is my all time favorite melody and love song. Kyo married a very sweet lady as you can see from her interview. i wish i knew what everyone was saying and the part about his appearence on Steve Allen, which i remember slightly as well as Jack Parr. Sreve Allen also did a great PBS series called Meeting of Minds a roundtable of famous people from history played in character by some of the great actors of the 70's it was amazing too.

I think the video of the Japanese show that featured Kyu's wife was 1998 and in that show, they showed the clip from Steve Allen Show, which was in the '60's. Also, in the Japanese show, they mention that it has been 13 years since he passed away.

This song means more to me than any other I have heard in my entire existence here on Earth. Kyu left a precious gift to his wife (first) and to a hundred million others. If I had some way to take back the grief that he and his fellow passengers suffered on that fateful flight, then I would do it. God might not be really perfect; mybe He made a mistake, just the the rest of us often do.

If Britain had Freddie Mercury, Then Japan had this here Kyu Sakamoto. What do they both have in common? Wonderful songs, Wonderful singing voices. I'm VERY thankful to be taking Japanese classes after a 2-year determined wait, And I'm happy to know good music like Kyu's Masterpieces, along with a few One Ok Rock songs I found from a friend. After discovering the One Ok Rock songs, I went to go see if there was any other great Japanese music, thus introducing me to Kyu-San. I was shocked to then learn this dude died in JAL123. Darn you, Tailstrike, And Darn you, poor maintenance/repairs.

@jwjwmarcum - Taste of Honey had an excellent, pretty song that borrowed the melody and structure of "Ue O Muite Arukou," by Kyu Sakamoto, but it wasn't a translation. It's not even close to the actual translation of the song. "Sukiyaki" is something that was chosen to appeal to an American audience, the actual title translates to "I look up when I walk so the tears won't fall." Isn't that a more beautiful and romantic title?

@xtiml The way I see this song is like this: the hardships that come with life ( relationship troubles, troubles with the self, etcetera) are the ones that make us sad. But there is so much humanity in pain and sadness. So this song has more than sadness. It's sad because one can feel so alone (hittori "one person), but thank goodness we can experience it all and keep "walking with our eyes turned upwards" towards the next stage in life. It's a celebratory song. : )
