Nice build, and an interesting technique the "inverse chipping". As someone said, get yourself an airbrush, double action... you will enjoy the painting process sooo much... and the effects you can create from there are far superior that what you can do with a brush. Just one thing about the hinomarus (the red roundels as you call them), it should be pristine, perhaps just a bit decolored or red paint touched, but not noticeable chipped unless the plane has crashed and/or is abandoned. It is the Emperor's symbol and was very well kept by the ground crews even when the rest of the paint was falling apart, especially at the end of the war due to shortages of chemicals for paints. Also, for very old decals, sometimes a layer of satin or gloss varnish on top before decaling them with water helps to keep cohesion. I do have the very same kit (new packaging) in my stash... will have to tackle it eventually. The shape of the plane is indeed interesting. Thank you for the content and showing your work. Cheers from Buenos Aires.

Wow, thanks for the great information about the 'hinomarus'. I haven't really (fully) delved into the history of my kits yet. I do read a bit about them, but once I’ve come up with my own design, I get started building quickly. And thanks for the tips! I'm still considering an airbrush. I’m hesitant because of the cost, the noise of the compressor, and the cleaning! But maybe soon... Thanks for your comment and happy building! Cheers from The Netherlands :)

I use stretched sprue to fill the gaps like you did with the sheet plastic around the vertical stabilizers. That way you can manipulate it while it's soft from the cement and sometimes there's no need for further filling or sanding. Practice with the riveting tool, it's pretty easy to run a line of rivets by eye without using tape for a guide. If there isn't a panel line to run alongside, I just draw a pencil line and run along that. The tool will track pretty straight all by itself. And I like your technique on the instrument panel. Get an airbrush. You'll wish you had years earlier.

Haha yes, a friend of mine also bought an airbrush for his planes. And I'm very curious how that would work. Maybe I can try it out some time. Thanks for the tip about the stretched sprue! Easy to manipulate indeed. Good idea! And I will definitely use the riveting tool more often. It looks so beautiful (on models from other KZbin builders)!

Outstanding build. Love the gear retracting theme. Part E4 are Oxygen bottles, mislabeled by Hasegawa as bombs. Maybe something lost in translation from Japanese to English. Going to steal your technique for the instrument panel.

Thanks for the compliment. The explanation that there is oxygen in the tanks indeed sounds much more credible. And yes, you can 'steal' the technique 😄 Everything I do I also 'stole' from another KZbin-modelbuilder :)

all it needs is a Godzilla model to go along with it :)

Haha, yes that would indeed be a nice addition 🏙️ 🦍. An epic scene! Thanks for the comment.

You should watch the anmated movie Skycrawlers, they have really cool alternate versions of some planes including this one.
