This show and its characters are so well written. Legitimately teared up a bit at the end there. I don't think I know another series where the side characters are so interesting and develop as much. Glad you guys are enjoying this.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood has very good side characters too. Not in the same way than Samurai Champloo though, since it's only one big story and they don't meet new ones almost every episode. So I guess it's easier to develop them with little bits on several episodes.

Monster and Cowboy Bebop deserve a mention. Even the one-off characters are memorable as hell.

Well technically people could live totally free in our society or a one like old Japan, but they must be prepared to have a very short existence. The biggest problem won't be to be free but to face the consequences of your choice until the end. Most people who pretend to want to live free aren't ready to lose everything for it. Mugen seems to have made the choice and accepted the life that goes with it, since he doesn't complain about the bad sides and even enjoys it. It may be far easier in old Japan than in today societies though, with less efficient police and communications that allow such people to be one step ahead.

I think this is the core issue with society nowadays. People need to read more about history. Death was always easier faster and a lot more common back in the days and mostly all centuries except ours the 21st. So people either lived a short life or simple life or military life. Killings always happened since there were no cameras etc etc. The average ages were between 20-40. Everything was kill or be killed. Only the noble lived a lavish life and even then the nobles were killed for power. Our world now is vastly different. We are in a more modern era where its half survival half comfort living. Even though there's proxy wars. We are in the most peaceful time to be alive with the most modern technology
