In this lesson we are learning about prepositions and why they are so important. Should you learn a prepositions list? I think so! We are talking about the complete subject and predicate. We are also focusing on compound subjects and predicates. How do I identify a gerund? Is the "ing" a verb, an adjective, a gerund?

There's a lot of work to study in this class, I'm going to put together a table to memorize everything, I've always studied these words but I had no idea that after digraming it would be so easy to understand why they exist, I'm loving these classes in this new module, thank you very much, I'm looking forward to the next classes!

I don't think so that giving acts as an object of missed instead it acts as a gerund or present participle describing gift ,a noun, that acts as an object of missed. Are we on the same page; however,I understand what you are explaining that gift is a noun acting as an adjective modifying giving a gerund, but it's not natural to use both gift and gerund together, and the first noun, gift ,as a compound noun like school bus, bus stop.

Hello, We are not on the same page. It is very obvious to me that giving is the object in this sentence. If you ask the question, What is being missed? It is the giving that is being missed not the gift. Gift is the adjective describing the gerund giving. Giving is not a present participle, it is not the adjective, but Giving is the noun (gerund) which is sitting in the object position. Gerunds are nouns and any noun or pronoun can sit in an object position because an object position is a noun position. You are correct that school bus and bus stop are compound nouns because they are referring to one particular thing or place and gift-giving could be a compound adjective if I wrote the sentence differently. It is 100% natural to say gift giving. The word gift is not considered a noun in this scenario. It is an adjective. Of course grammarian can agree to disagree with each other in such cases. I have been speaking gift giving in my native togue (English) for over 50 years. I am so happy that you are such an avid student of the English language. I can tell that you are trying hard to understand such a hard topic that some to the best grammarians do not agree on. Gerunds and present participles are so confusing. Good luck with your studies.
