Excellent video. As an Ellroy reader I think overall it's about the immersive experience, a chaotic network. Yes, there's always a good story in his books, one that progresses and ends but Ellroy is open about not being interested in closure or folding everything neatly. Plus I read his outlines before he begins writing are huge, the only way you can keep track of everything
@WhytheBookWins10 ай бұрын
Definitely, and I can imagine how intense his outline must be 😮

@@WhytheBookWins sorry what I meant to say I read that he (Ellroy) firstly works on a long outline of the plot where everything is detailed chronologically ... then he writes the novel

Holy Lord I just love you! While reading the book I have been looking for a step-by-step plot explanation just to keep up with all the side stories and the ton of characters but only found summary of the movie. This video cleared those 1-2 doubts that were preventing me from fully enjoying the book final! Lovely!

I wish someone would do this for all of Ellroys novels. I love his stuff but I am not very smart and could have used some help.

The book is a labyrinth of confusing plot threads. I did follow it well enough but it was still a bit too meandering which is a bit of a theme in Elroy’s writing. Course didn’t help I read it after the film

I watched your Black Dahlia video, and you talked about how complicated the plot of L.A. Confidential is. I thought, “How complicated can it be? I like challenging stories.” Then I watched this video. Yeah, complicated is an understatement! 😂 Great job breaking it all down!

such an impressive breakdown! i know your channel is book/movie comparisons so it wouldnt fit, but it would be amazing to see you do this kind of deconstruction for some of his other (equally complicated) novels like American Tabloid or the Cold Six Thousand lol. anyway this vid got me to subscribe, cant wait to check out your other videos ✌

@@WhytheBookWins I’ll never understand how Ellroy can keep track of what’s he writing. My brain was exhausted after finishing the entire LA Quartet
@heyguysitsmethatguy29 күн бұрын
@@tocks14totally agree & speaking as someone who just finished a more recent of his novels-This Storm-i can say he's only gotten more amazingly convoluted in his storytelling. its the second novel, after Perfidia, in a new wide ranging series (his LA QUINTET) set off by Pearl Harbor. he's my favorite novelist.

Thank you. The book sounds so convoluted there is no reason for me to read it.

I really liked your video, and agree it is confusing. It is one of my favorite books though. I do have some recommendations. The Big Nowhere, the 2nd book has Buzz Meeks as a POV character and his last chapter better sets up the prologue to LAC. Dudley is also a big character there. Also, in White Jazz, the last book both Ed and Dudley are in it and it's not only a good book but also good if you want to know what happened to them next. I tried to do a similar thing as you (not a video, I filled in a lot of the Ellroy wiki a few yrs back after a reread) and agree it is quite the task. Again, thanks for the video.

thank you so much! I've been thinking of going back and reading the LA Quartet in order. Or at least reading the fourth one to see what happens haha
@Coco19822001 Жыл бұрын
@@WhytheBookWins Yea, The Black Dahlia is good (waaaay better than the movie) but Dudley doesn't appear in it. The TBN-WJ all have him in it and in fact in the 2 books of the 2nd LA Quartet Dudley is actually a POV character.
