Curtis seemed like a gentle, kind artist. LA Confidential should have swept the Oscars. It was a brilliant film with many layers. RIP.

I agree. Titanic winning so many awards was more political than deserved. The proof is in the pudding. Hanson's film has legs while Cameron's sank like a stone after awhile.

"L.A. Confidential" is one of the most miraculous adaptations of a great novel in cinematic history, and how Hanson and Helgeland were able to boil Ellroy's majestic, sprawling, decade-spanning opus into something so palatable in a single film's runtime is incredible. I'd go so far as to call it the best adapted screenplay win Oscar ever bestowed (by a hair over "Amadeus"). Rest in peace, Curt.

Truly an extraordinary adaptation. They took maybe 25% of Ellroy's sprawling, labyrinthine, epic novel and fashioned it into a taut, thrilling classic of a film. Well deserved!
@nintendolegoboy6 жыл бұрын
You actually took the words out of the novelist's mouth. He said they took 20% and adapted it.

One of my favorite movies. Glad it at least won 2 Oscars. Should have won lots more including Best Picture.

LA Confidential is the last movie you'd expect to be written by such a young guy.

Christopher McQuarrie winning for Usual Suspects, which is an ORIGINAL and he wrote at the age of like 26 is pretty insane too.

Brian Helgeland also won a Razzie that year for The Postman. He keeps both statues side by side on his mantle.

While L.A. Confidential was a good movie, I think Titanic is a masterpiece! I'm glad it won. You are entitled to your opinion, though.

I haven't seen LA Confidential, but I imagine it's way better than Titanic. I've seen some parts of Titanic and it seems corny.

People talk about Sandra Bullock accepting an Oscar and a Razzie the same weekend, but Brian Helgeland did it first guys. He won worst screenplay for The Postman, good on him, he wanted to put them back to back
@axr71496 жыл бұрын
Actually Brian Helgeland was the 2nd person to do this. The first was Alan Menken, who won the Worst Original Song Razzie for the film NEWSIES (1992) (the song "High Times, Hard Times"), and won 2 Oscars for ALADDIN (1992) (Best Original Score and Best Original Song ("A Whole New World")) in the same weekend.

L.A. Confidential was probably the biggest looser of1998 Oscars. Only two awards out of 9 nominations. If Titanic would be nominated for Best adapted screenplay, I have no doubt it would win despite of LAC superiority. And that superiority for me is very obvious. Fantastic movie.

After Curtis Hanson died, both Brian Helgeland and James Ellroy went public with their dislike of this movie. Weird. It's undoubtedly better than any version Helgeland would have directed.
@cesarzpontu88862 жыл бұрын
I didn't know they both disliked this movie. Ellroy i kinda understand, but not Helgeland.
@flaccidusminimus21702 жыл бұрын
@@cesarzpontu8886 They each sang a much different tune for many years after the film came out. Ellroy practically sang hosannas about it in every interview he gave for the first 5 years of its existence. I think he's grateful that it increased his global profile, but eventually came around to thinking of it as excessively reductive Ellroy-lite. But he only began to say this after Hanson's passing, perhaps afraid of hurting his feelings.

Great movie, deserved win. But can anybody answer me two things. The one thing I couldn't figure out is when Buzz Meeks and Strensland went back to Susan Lefferts' house to store the heroine, what happened? Because Bud found Meeks under Susan's house and I looked online and it said Smith killed Meeks but I can't figure out if Smith killed Meeks at Lefferts' house, how did Strensland get away to the Nite Owl? I know that Strensland was meeting Susan for a date, but did Meeks go back to steal the heroine while Strensland was at the Nite Owl and Smith intercepted Meeks at Susan's house then went to the Nite Owl to finish the job on Strensland and Susan? If so is it safe to say Smith took the heroine and Curtis Hanson and the other guy forgot to write about it? One other thing I didn't know is when Smith shot Jack and Jack said: "Rollo Tamasi" was this his way if flushing out Smith to Ed? I'm wondering why Smith asked Ed the next day about that "dead end lead" on one of Jack's cases, in other words, who did Smith think Rollo Tamasi really was? I hope I didn't confuse the shit out of anybody willing to read this...
