Classic French movie with Louis de Funès and Coluche is a French comedian and actor, very famous for the creation of a food aid association called "Les restos du coeur" The film tells, in a comic way, of a problem emerging in France in the 1970s: junk food due to the rise of the agri-food industry.I wasn't even born when this movie came out but I saw it much later when I was a teenager.

The old actor (The food inspector) is Louis de Funes, the best funny comedian star of the 60's and 70's in France. Have a look on "La Grande Vadrouille" (1968) which is the best "De Funes" movie according to a lot and the "Gendarmes" movie serie... I promise you will love it, especially if you watch it in original french language (you seem well understand it)

"l'aile ou la cuisse" means the main two favorite parts of a chicken : wings or thighs. Louis de Funés is a food critic for a culinary book : le Guide Duchemin (like guide Michelin IRL which decerns stars on restorants) He wants to leave his guide to his son after he retires. But his son (Coluche) wants (in secret) to be a clown in a circus.

So the small old guy who's the "main character" in this movie is called Louis De Funès and he's a legend in France as far as comedy goes : think Jim Carrey, Mel Brooks, Leslie Nielsen, Charlie Chaplin. That's how big of a deal he is in France. As others have said, Louis de Funès is a monument in France. He's arguably the biggest star in the History of French cinema. The man became famous quite late, in his 50s, then he had a never ending string of successes until he passed away. A good reminder to never give up.

"L'aile ou la cuisse" title refers to the family "war" when chicken is served, usually on Sunday, and aaaalllll the children want the same parts of the chicken, either wings or thigh. I am team thigh ! Although as an adult, I prefer all the more tasty parts like liver, heart, brains etc... still good memories of good old days arguing with siblings whose time have come to finaly get one of the 2 treasured legs this week ! In L'Aile ou la Cuisse, De Funès is a high official who prefers good quality to modern industrial food. Food inspector must be a good assessement. He wants his Son to replace him eventually but his son played by Coluche is an artist and wastes his life on meaningless things, to the despair of his good taste father.
