Classic French movie with Louis de Funès and Coluche is a French comedian and actor, very famous for the creation of a food aid association called "Les restos du coeur" The film tells, in a comic way, of a problem emerging in France in the 1970s: junk food due to the rise of the agri-food industry.I wasn't even born when this movie came out but I saw it much later when I was a teenager.

Louis de Funés is a food critic for a culinary book : le Guide Duchemin (like guide Michelin IRL which decerns stars on restorants) He wants to leave his guide to his son after he retires. But his son (Coluche) wants (in secret) to be a clown in a circus.

"L'aile ou la cuisse" is one of my favorite movie with Louis De Funès. He's a food inspector called Mister Duchemin and he publishes a book called "guide Duchemin" (a parody of guide Michelin). And he has a son he wants him to inherit this institution. The son is a French humorist called Coluche )who died in a motorbike accident in 1986, and he has founded a charitable association called "Les Restos du Coeur") I also love the music in this movie by the great composer Vladimir Cosma.

The scene is already funny as hell, but the German dub made it so much more hilarious with all the added dialogue: When the lamp falls down for the first time he says "No! The bidet falls off the wall!" When he tastes the wine he says instead of "very nouveau" in German/English "Yum, Weedeater! It pulls me the shoes out!" which is a very literal translation of the German saying "Das zieht mir die Schuhe aus" ("it takes my shoes off!") when something is very bad tasting or inedible. When he takes the temperature of the meat he mutters to himself "Ah, 3 degrees more than an ice cream!" And when the lamp shade lands on the steak, he says to himself: "How nice! Fried horse with a hat!" And his sotto voce response to the waiter asking him "Does this look like the toilet?" is "Well it smells like it" in the kitchen 😆 German movie dubbing in the 70s and 80s had the habit of adding more funny dialogue to a lot of foreign movies and tv shows, some of those are very popular here even today, and have a cult following. Best example would be the British short lived tv show "The Persuaders" (1971-72) starring Tony Curtis and Roger Moore. It received some mixed reviews and successes in the UK but became a very popular cult show in Germany thanks to the hilarious and wacky dubbing. Tony Curtis himself (who understood German) even loved it and wanted the German dubbing script writer, Rainer Brandt, to write more scripts for forthcoming seasons for The Persuaders, but the show got cancelled before that could happen. it's still shown on TV here today and some of the German lines have even made it into daily language.

You forgot to mention that the father-son conflict is just a sideplot and this movie is mainly a satirical commentary on indutrialized food production and the rise of american style fast food franchises like McD in France in the late 60s and early 70s, as shown in the movies bad guy Jaques Tricatel, a fast food tycoon played by Julien Guiomar (clearly a take on Jaques Borel, a french businessman who opened the first american burger franchise, a Wimpy's in Paris in 1961, and later established fast food Restaurants along the french highways)

If I may it's kinda complicated to fully appreciate the scene without any context so here it is : Louis de Funès is here playing an extremely famous critic for culinary stuff called the Guide Duchemin (which is obviously a reference to the Restaurant/hotel guide Michelin). So he comes to restaurants and test things to rate them. Since he is famous he is there disguised as "an american" so people won't recognize him ^^ The movie is really good, i highly recommand you watch it entirely ^^

French comedies were so funny in the 70s. We could even make laugh of WW2, and France occupied by German army (and this was not shocking to make fun of it). But nowadays, french comedies are so depressing : the receipe, take a random family with issues, difficulties, illness or whatever makes it pathetic, and try to find happiness in it. I can't bear french movies anymore.
