Hi Leo, well, the disappearances of the fez you refer to was specifically showing the withdrawal of the Ottoman Turkish troops at the end of WW! and the subsequent entrance of the British. It showed the troubles in 1921 (Arab-Jewish riots that claimed many lives) soon after. All in all, very stirring footage and includes many events from Tel Aviv's history. It starts by showing old Jaffa, and then the establishment of Ahuzat Bayit, a neighborhood outside Jafa wjhich grew into Teel Aviv, the founding of Gymnasia Herzliya, Tel Aviv's first high school, which was eventually demolished (by one of its alumni, no less!) and turned into Israel's first skyscraper, the Shalom Tower. There were just so many things. The filmmakers made a documentary about Tel Aviv history available here on You Tube, and some of the footage from that multipart documentary is condensed into this short 15-minute video. I would recommend you watch the whole thing but it's only in Hebrew.

Why the glossover of 1967 & 1973? I remember, as a 3 year old, watching the TV News networks in America showing many people running to air raid shelters in Tel Aviv in 1967 and going to fundraisers by Hadassah women's organization to raise funds for Israel via bonds, my Mom entertained audiences singing to sell Israel bonds and then the absolute horrors of Yom Kippur War in '73, when I was 10. We prayed for the dead while singing "Lu Ye Hi, Lu Ye Hi" in Sunday School at our Temple.

Well, yes, people in Tel Aviv did go to air raid shelters in 1967 but Tel Aviv wasn't really on the front lines the way Jerusalem was in the Six Day War, as Western Jerusalem was shelled by the Jordanians and where there was much intense fighting as Israeli forces took East Jerusalem. Although Netanya, nearby north of Tel Aviv, was bombed by the Jordanian Air Force in 1967, Tel Aviv itself was left unscathed, although many of its citizens of course were drafted in 1967 and 1973, and of course you are right all of Israel a tiny country with small population felt the effects of those wars. But the video showed many other violent events in Tel AViv history, the Arab riots in Jaffa in 1921 and again in 1936, the bombing of Tel Aviv by the Italian Air Force during WW2, and later fighting between Israel, the Egyptians and the Iraqis, as well as various Palestinian Arab militias before and during Israel's War of Independence, and again it showed the aftermath of suicide bombing attacks in the 1990s and later the early 2000s. But the clip dwelled more on the positive and went over these unpleasant times quickly, if you noticed.

If Jews purchased the land, at a price far higher than it was worth, in what was the Ottoman Empire, how is it Arab any more than it is Jewish. As for being built 'on top of jaffa'. Jaffa was home to Jews and Muslims and Tel Aviv's success saw it grow inland and along the coast and it merged into Jaffa. If you'd ever been to Jaffa, which you obviously haven't it is pretty much the same as it was back then architecturally, with some modern buildings, it wasn't knocked down and suddenly there is a sky scraper on it or anything. Further, Palestine was just the name of the British Mandate based on the old Roman name to try to deJudify that land, 'Syria ex Palestina', named after the Philistines, ancient enemies of the Jews and with no connection to the Arabs who came in bulk a thousand years later. Until then it was the name of a region, it has never been an independent state and it nor Jerusalem are mentioned in the Torah, the Bible or the Koran and never in history has it been a capital of a Muslim or Arab nation. A significant proportion of the Arabs living in the area by 1948 had swarmed in as economic refugees from surrounding areas in the '20s, '30s & 40s due to investment and developments made by the British and the Jewish settlers, who brought literacy, commerce, jobs and innovation.

אני מבקש לכל המאמינים שלא ידחפו את אף לאן שלא אכפת להם, תתנו לי לחיות את החיים שלנו כמו שאנו רוצים, ואם בא לכם לרקוד או לשיר בקול רם, ברוכים הבאים למקומות שלכם, מה אתם מנסים להכניס אותנו לתוך הדת, הלוואי ולמישהו היה הסבר טוב כדי לשנות את חיינו אבל יש לנו פשוט עבודות, רצונות יחידות שונות אל תנסו גם לא להפר לנו אותם, כי מאז הקמת המדינה הדתיים רק מתעסקים בזה, ומה אתם יודעים בכלל מה מתאים לחילונים ומה לא?, חלאס כמעט מאה שנות ציונות ואתם עדיין ממשיכים לעצבן אותנו, די מספיק, אנחנו לא חייבים לסבול מהבוקר ועד הלילה בגלל אמונה עיוורת שיש לכם, שאלה אחת לפחות, אם זה לא נראה לכם יפה שבן אדם יאכל חזיר, או שילך למועדונים כי זה מעיר את היצרים שמתוך הבן אדם, הייתם אוהבים איזה מישהו שיחתוך לכם איזו חתיכת בשר לא כשר או להביא לכם זונות לבית שלכם, בטח הייתם מתבאסים משום שזה פוגע בדת, נכון? אז למה אסור שכל בן אדם יעשה מה שבא לו, מה שטוב לו, לא כל אחד לפי דרכו, או אגב אתם דתיים וחרדים מלמדים או הדורות שלא שייכות לכם ואפילו לא הניהול המדיני, לשנוא ולתקוף מישהו שנראה שונה לגמרי ממכם, מה קורה לכם, אני מאוד מקווה שתפתחו את הראש, ותגלו עולם שבו כל הדברים היפים והנפלאים יוצאים לעור במקום לראות אותנו כאויבים שלכם, אז אל תתקרבו לתל אביב נקודה, הבנתם אותי, מאיזו עולם נוצרתם, מאיזו אבות, ועוד דבר נוסף שמבלבל אותי, העובדה כפשוטו להגיד שאבות אבותינו שמרו על התורה במשך אלפי שנים, אתם בטוחים בנתונים האלה?.

Jaffa is an ancient city to the south from Tel Aviv. Tel Aviv was a new municipality, started in 1909 - from scratch. One of its first buildings was a beautiful gymnasia (school).
