Is baking soda and soda khar same thing?

Thank you for your query. So the baking soda that we substitute khar, is sodium bicarbonate and khar in assamese means alkaline. The natural khar that we Assamese use is made of bhim kol or athiya kol banana peel. The details are given in my Cabbage khar recipe. Please check there. Hope this was helpful. Great recipe! I love Lai Haak Khar on its own and with Hukan Gus 😋 Wondering if I can achieve the same taste using Baby Mustad leaves commonly found at Asian grocery stores in N. America. Would you suggest any other leafy vegetable for this recipe? Thanks in advance for your suggestion.

Thank you very much. The mustard greens will not at all taste good in this khar. Tumi Chinese nohole Korean stores ot saba. They carry mer lai xaak ( the bigger variety) the ones we get in Assam.

My Abbu-a celebrated police officer in Upper Assam passed away in Aug due to COVID, is actually from the family of Azan Peer Sahab. Whereas, Ammi is from Saleh Peer Sahab's family. I learned from your video that you are from Jorhat. Miss home and Assam. :)

Jyoti Bora, you do have a point in your question. Yes Miah people from Bangladesh, don't eat khar. But we, the khati axohmia Muslim people who has been living in Assam for decades do consume khar. And I have also seen the Assamese Muslims who has been living in Bangladesh or elsewhere in the entire world for decades now also eat khar. So I request you to enjoy my recipes in peace with a broader view. Thank you and do tc 🙂.
