A metaphorical prologue was the norm for the Late Renaissance/Early Baroque operas. Nikolaus Harnoncourt, who conducts here, wrote that the operas of Monteverdi exist on three tiers: the highest being forces of nature seen here, the next being the mythological gods, and finally the human world. Each tier influences the next. As far as who wrote these, it is theorized Monteverdi’s students helped him write Poppea. But no one knows exactly what parts of it. In any case, Monteverdi’s influence is primary throughout. As for the other surviving operas, they were almost certainly wholly his.

davvero molto bello.
