I do not understand how the writing and embellishment increases the value. It certainly does not affect the wood selectin quality, the quality if build or playability. Only how expensive it looks, because obviously it takes a lot of time to make all those engravings. I am fine with a simple Guqin myself. Example: I have a $100 Erhu and a $750 Erhu. In every detail they are the same, except the $750 has a lot more calligraphy on it. They play and sound the same too.

in the other hand, if you were a rich man, collector or a performer, both Guqin functions in the same way, and you can buy anyone without economic pressure, which one will you buy? that's the point. that's how embellishment works, to be watched.

If you wanted something that sounds better You should buy it because it has longer aged wood, even thickness snake skin, construction and craftmanship. If you wanted to look pretty buy the one with embellishments. If you wanted to have better sound and look pretty you obviously need to pay more. Last point you might not be good with the instrument so even a good one sounds the same as a low quality one.
