When we visited Beijing in 2006 our hotel was in the middle of a hutong. It was really charming. I heard many were destroyed, which is a real shame. Hopefully the Chinese/Beijing city government starts to value their cultural heritage more and preserves what it has left, instead of blindly replacing it with anything new.
