Yah, the back 3 pins need to be a touch higher so the spool can engage, but that would reduce the number of possible combinations if they avoid the lowest cuts I guess

Anytime i gut a lock I notice the same thing with security pins that are in the bible above long key pins. I always think what is the point in the manufacturer even using them. It drives my OCD crazy as any lock I re-pin for customers I always make sure the security pins I pin up are in full use. I use different length spools, mushrooms, and serrated pins depending on key pin length to get the most protection out of them. I've seen way too many locks with security pins that basically you would never know were inside them. I know Kwikset uses mainly 0.180" drivers including spools. Schlage locks usually have 0.165" or 0.172" drivers. Now most of the Schlage locks that have the 0.165" driver in them their spools are usually functioning even if their is just 0.030" worth in the sheer line.

Yep, many manufacturers (or locksmiths) seem to just scatter them in there at random and just meet some minimum number of security pins requirement without needing a pairing system. Eg. spool only goes with these lengths of pin, standard with these longer pins, etc.
