I love seeing these old tv show performances because you get a real good feel of the artist and it feels a tad more intimate then a regular show. I loved this... I live in NY for a year and I miss it a lot. A usually wonderful state and city that is just in the middle of some crazy stuff. I love that city. And Buffalo.... NY is my second home! Billy Joel is one of the best piano players in this genre or anywhere and he can always keep a tune going...

"I just got de ja vu" Yep, Billy put you back in a New York state of mind. Talk about a vibe, he doesn't need his little smoke machine, he transports you to a bar below a building on 57th street in Manhattan, and you can smell the bourbon being poured over ice. Great reaction, Lee, rock on!

No one has to convince me about Billy Joel. I still have 5 of his albums on vinyl. But my greatest memory and experience was the tour that he and Elton John did together with their dueling grand piano's facing each other on stage, and even Kiki Deein made an appearence. Billy and Elton, doing their own songs and then doing each other's songs and then doing a few of their songs simultaneously. I've easily done a 100 live concerts in my lifetime ever since 1968. But this was special because it was different. It wasn't like anything I'd seen before and most. Obviously to the greatest Rock hero piano play.

You need to react to "Prelude/Angry Young Man". Especially amazing, given he's playing with a broken left thumb (you can see the white bandaging in the video). He broke it in an accident suffered while he was riding his motorcycle. Live performance on Long Island.

I read somewhere that during Covid Billy Joel continued to pay his band, even though they could not work during the shut-down. He knew he had one of the best bands behind him in the business, and he wanted to ensure that they stayed with him for when they could perform again. I always compare Billy Joel to Elton John - many similarities, including those powerhouse musicians behind them. The two of them have even performed together, and are friends. Those songs are definitely a must-see! Great reaction for an awesome song!

This is a great performance, and it's live! No machines to adjust the pitch (human or instrument)! The quality of the musicianship shines through. On the piano, Billy Joel is masterful. It shows up well in this song. His voice is great in every song. His other musicians are amazing-all of them. I am enjoying and appreciating this one! Thanks for playing it.

One of the all time great songs of any era. He is portraying Ray Charles in this performance which is his favorite artist. He recorded a song with Ray many years ago! Billy once said he was not crazy about his own voice! Lee you are so right about the music industry and how the corporate people always try to sell a certain image to the fans instead of letting the artists be themselves. That was the case 60 or even 70 years ago too!

Thanks for the reaction to my all time favorite, Billy Joel. You get it all with Billy, great writing, lyrics, singing, playing and performing. You had the band members right, although I think just Liberty, Richie, Russell and Doug, the regular band members, were there. The others were on the album. This is a great early performance by Billy. At 75 he still gives a great concert to sold out crowds and his voice has gotten even better with age.

Side Note: Billy was born on Long Island (about 40 minutes outside New York City). He often records shows in the New York metro, at either the Nassau Coliseum, or in The City at Madison Square Garden. He's a New Yorker through and through, and when he sings songs like "New York State Of Mind" or "I Saw The Lights Go Out On Broadway", he's singing from the heart, and he's often singing to his people, there in New York. It's a wonderful synergy.

Lee i''m a born and raised New yorker my parents had a house in Putnam lake 10 mins on rte 6 to Brewster lived there for 5 years after leaving NYC in 1979 and then returning afer getting married and living in westchester county Mt Vernon right next to the Bronx. I love the "Turnstiles" album (it's in my top 20), but me listening to it repeatedly had an odd side effect: everyone assumed I was a big Billy Joel fan, and kept giving me more of his albums (seven, in fact, by the time they were done). All had some good-to-great songs on them, but there were none I wanted to keep listening to all the way through, and I was (and am) mainly an album listener, so they sat on the shelf. And I kept on listening to "Turnstiles"...

Liberty Devito is in a percussionist lane all his own. That’s not Ritchie on Sax in that performance. Find as many live clips as you can from the sweet spot in Billy’s career. Btw, he played Shea Stadium the night before it was torn down. Perfect message sent for a Long Island kid to play for the home crowd. Checkout the song he wrote for, and recorded with Ray Charles (in Ray’s style) called “Baby Grand.” It’s a must.
