CARs from Boston. This Album hit the airways with Thunder. Almost every song was played constantly for years. About 7 years ahead of their time, the Cars issued in "New-Wave" music. Mostly up-beat happy music, almost all is about Man/Woman relationships. CANDY-O Album is a great suit of 4 songs that must be played together to get the whole feeling. That suit will send shivers down your spine when listened as a whole.

Back about 1977 I walked into a club out in the woods near Manchester, N.H. and I asked the doorman who was playing and he said "I don't know, The Automobiles or The Cars or something like that." What a difference a year or two made. They were EVERYWHERE in the late 70's and into the 80's. Great first two albums.

Benjamin Orr (Orzechowski), Cars bassist and vocalist, graduated from my high school 4 years before me! Used to see him in bands all around Cleveland, Oh. His chance meeting with Ric Ocasek in Cleveland led to a great partnership that became the Cars out of Boston. Ric is singing on this track. Very cool and successful 80s era band. Many great songs. You mentioned Drive. That's Benny Orr on lead vocal. Cleveland radio was huge back in the day. Our local stations are responsible for making stars out of Springsteen, Bowie, Rush, Genesis, just to name a few. Keep up the good work, Lee. Love this channel. Takes me back to junior high. The Cars started out as masters of this kind of punky pop-rock, until they sort of lost the script a few albums later. But I'll never forget hearing "Just What I Needed" and knowing instantly it would become a huge hit. And yeah, almost every song on this album was a hit on some level. Talk about a smash debut record.

'You Might Think' was the first song I'd heard by The Cars, so I'd also assumed then (in '86) that they were a brandnew band - until about 20 years later, when I came across 'Anthology - The Best Of The Cars' at the local library and heard all of their early Hits for the first time, and I realised they'd been around already for quite some time _before_ 1986! 😅

Thanks Lee, glad you liked it. The album this comes from (their debut album) is all really very good, and it begs to be played loudly. This was out when I started dating the woman I married, and despite the "loser" implication of the unromantic title, we referred to it as "our song." Today, 40+ years later, we still laugh at that whenever we hear "You're all I Got Tonight."

Yeah - this was from their fantastic debut album - which I bought when it came out and listened to many, many times. I never thought of them as new wave, but they certainly foreshadowed the new wave sound of the 80s. Maybe proto-new wave is a better description? They bridged the gap between the "classic rock" sound of the 70s and the new wave sound of the 80s. A really good band no matter what!

Did they get radio play? Ouch 👈 Yes, and yes that’s New Wave, with one foot in hard rock. Their debut album and Tour was a new direction and HUGE success, with solid tight musicianship and more than a little creativity with their lyrics. Hawks was most purposeful with his solos that weren’t climactic pieces of the songs, similar to those in the past, like Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman as his intent was to go away from heavy in the opposite direction with a POP sound. This was a New Wave formula that actually made it harder for them to initially get signed. Those scouts for the major labels were soon kicking themselves for passing on them because of their own inabilities to adapt quickly to what was coming. The Cars, The Pretenders and dozens of others created a new horizon, coming out of Disco and Punk of the late 70’s.
