Yes. Get this. Mitch Mitchell started life as a British TV Child Star, and then he decided he wanted to become a musician. He trained with jazz drummer, Jim Marshall, who also owned an instrument shop, which developed & sold the Marshall amps which became Jimi Hendrix's chief amplier. Jimi was so impressed with Mitchell's style, that he gave Mitchell's drumming free range.

Gotta disagree in the sense that psychedelic music was very much “of that time”. That WAS the time of psychedelic music. If you’re speaking though of Hendrix’s guitar techniques and innovations, then yeah: He was the source of inspirations for myriad players going forward.

@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 and you could also argue that the B-side of "Hey Joe", which of course was "Stone Free" (in my humble opinion the superior song), was the beginning of the funk-rock fusion. Hendrix went further into the funk-rock exploration on Band Of Gypsys, but the seeds were sown back in 1966 with "Stone Free". Hendrix was so much more than simply a phenomenal guitarist.

Me, too. I was about 10 when he came out, my brother went to Berkeley for college and met him there one time. Jimi's aunt lived there and Jimi lived with her off and on. I loved both his albums and I cried when he died.

Ned from Spain here. I'm a drummer for 50 plus years and Mitch is still a major inspiration. He was a huge fan of Elvin Jones, Max Roach and Art Blakey among other jazz greats. He also got into contemporary Ginger Baker's vibe adding a 2nd bass drum to his kit later on. Mitch was also a UK TV and film actor when he was a kid. As you said there's the world before Are You..? and after that..it was never the same. Thank Fckn Gawd !

One of my top pics..This album broke the mold for guitar playing & music performance. I was a kid when I bought this lp & begged my older sister to take me to see Jimi at Cobo Hall in 1968 when I was 10, my first concert..You'll hear Mitch's jazz chops on 3rd Stone along with Jimi's guitar motif that sneaks it's way on other artists solos from time to time..Experienced is unto itself with the legendary Eddie Kramer engineering. Foxy & Purple Haze were radio hits, used to hear them being played in stores & at the mall..When you're listening they might remind you of other artists & there's a reason for it. Jimi changed the musical landscape for all who followed...Oh & it's one of my fav album covers of all time too..enjoy..

Yes, a sensational debut album. It came out around the same time as Sgt Pepper and if Pepper was the kind of album many people had been waiting for without knowing it, then "Are You Experienced" was the revolutionary breakthrough: no one had heard anything quite like these sounds/songs before, at least not with that level of artistic ambition and colour. The guy truly came like from another planet and in just four short years he transformed guitar playing and writing in so many ways. Mitch and Noel are very good sidemen too, especially Mitch who would continue as Jimi's main drummer even after the trío had disbanded in the spring of 1969. Mitchell's jazz-like fluidity and ability to both lay down grooves and sculpt out so many details was a great foil for Jimi.

Check out the bass on All Along the Watchtower, it's Jimi playing Noel's 8-string Hagstrom. Noel got fed up with Jimi doing endless takes and went to find a bar and drink so Jimi did the bass part. Often when doing jams in clubs with other guitar players Jimi would play bass. He had zero ego and just wanted for everyone to have fun.

Are You Experienced, the song, utilizes backwards tape for the percussive DJ sound and a backwards guitar solo. There is a great live version along with Little Wing on Winterland worth listening to. Eddie Kramer is the guy. He went on to produce Led Zeppelin once Jimi passed from Zep II on. ❤

To think of what he does on "Are You Experienced" a little philosophically, notice that he is talking about going beyond the realms of the ego towards the source of being. His use of the backwards guitar solo symbolizes this going inwards perfectly - you hear the end of the note first, and then experience going towards the source of the note.

This album came out when I was16 or 17, and that 'side' of the record, with The Wind Cries Mary, Fire, 3rd Stone, Foxy Lady, and Are You Experienced ...I'd put it up there with anything. It changed MY life; not just Jimi - the Music of the time - but especially this. It was all you might imagine it to be. I'm glad it's changing you, too. And I'm glad you're noticing his lyrics. Still some great songs to explore from this album! 1967 was an amazing year for music. 1966 was kind of a transitional year - heavier stuff started coming out and being recorded - The Beatles released Revolver in August, Fresh Cream came out late in the year, The Experience was starting to record this album, The Doors were recording their first album that summer. Then 67 came along and things really started changing - 'The Doors' was released, The Beatles released Sgt Pepper, this album came out, Surrealistic Pillow came out, you had Big Brother and The Holding Company with Janis, the Monterey Pop Festival happened, which was the first exposure for a lot of these bands... The difference in the music scene from 1965 to 1967 is just crazy. And to think that just four years earlier we didn't even have The Beatles yet. There was no concept of 'hard rock' - Louie Louie was about as heavy as it got in 1963. You'll love exploring 'Axis Bold As Love', more fantastic stuff on that.

Here's a few favorites by Jimi: "May This Be Love", "Angel", "Drifting", "Rainy Day Wish", "Voodoo Chile" (track #4 on Electric Ladyland; not Voodoo Child Slight Return) Has Steve Winwood on organ and Jack Casady on bass. "The Wind Cries Mary", "Rainy Day, Dream Away." Foxy Lady and Purple Haze were his big hits, and he got tired of playing them. That's all for now.

we were all prepped for this album by his previous album and the entire psychedelic musical environment. Hendrix had to come to England to be able to fully explore his potential. In England, the music at the time was a melting pot of various bits of guitar noise and effect experimentation. Hendrix's natural skill enabled him to soak up and enhance and make coherent everything .. he was like the Isaac Newton of Guitar.

When we heard Jimi had died my friend was class president and he announced his passing at an assembly in the gym. We hopped in our cars in the middle of the day and we went out and got blasted.

Yes, Mitch is one of the best rock drummers ever, and his jazzy chops were perfect for Jimi. But Jimi himself is absolutely on another level... he's inventing entire new modes of music here that few have managed to get back to since. Nobody has been more creative and expressive in the rock world. Nobody. The man is a legend for a reason. Subsequent listens will leave you ever more stunned by what's going on with his hands. The well of music he dug is deeper than I, for one, have managed to fully plumb. Perhaps there's no bottom.

Pete Townsend heard Jimi play in London, before this album came out, and was ready to hang up his guitar! Then he met Jimi, and he was so quiet and shy, more than willing to talk music with Pete. All the British "Stars" realized that Jimi had changed "The Game"!

If you ever get the chance to watch his performance at Monterey Pop Festival 1967 it's such a treat. He became really popular in England and came back to the US to headline this concert. The audience is literally in shock and awe watching him, completely blown away because he's so one of a kind. My favorite guitar player, I fell on in love with him when I was 10 and my older brother came home from college with his albums and Zap comic books.

I saw Jimi live near the end of his career - just a couple of months before he died. He blew me away. I was totally mind blown! What an incredible talent - and his playing seemed so effortless. I was so blessed to have seen him live. Noel Redding once played through my bass amp - an Acoustic 360/361. That was a trip.

The Beatles picked up on Jimi early. They used to go to his shows as early as '67. Jimi played the song Sgt Pepper, the weekend after it was released. The Beatles were in the audience.

Man, you said it when you realized that Jimi used his guitar as a percussion instrument. He was actually a one man band. Yep, Mitch added so much to the sound. But listen to a lot of Jimi's live shows. The recording quality was not great in those days. Sometimes, all you hear is Jimi and it's just as good. And Jimi played the foot pedal like an accordion. It's jaw dropping to watch him sing, play guitar and work that foot pedal. Yes, there is a before Jimi and after Jimi. He was a musical landmark.

I was lucky enough to have two young uncles, one 12 years , one 14 years older, who turned me on to rock music early. I got my first Beatles album when I was 6, and jimi when I was 8.
