Moon's drumming on this album is staggering. I honestly don't know how he didn't fall off his throne in utter exhaustion after recording each track. Keith doesn't play phrases, he plays fills it seems. Townshend has said several times in interviews that he played backing guitar to Moon's lead drums.

Keith Moon was such an insane drummer that when he passed away Roger Daltrey released a solo album titled UNDER A RAGING MOON. Cool song too. I recall decades ago when the Who's album TOMMY came out in movie form (a must-see). One movie critic commented that Roger Daltrey had the perfect rock band voice. That always stuck with me because it was so spot-on. Enjoy the movie someday. Peace out!

Keith Moon is my favorite drummer and possibly the quintessential rock star. Quadrophenia is probably the greatest rock album ever made. Check out “The Real Me” “5:15” “Bellboy” “I Am One” “Doctor Jimmy” from the album…. “Baba O’Riley” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again”, are also quintessential Who tracks (which you have almost certainly heard at some point). For variety, older Who songs include “Substitute”, “The Kids Are Alright” and their first enormous hit “My Generation” (which is regarded by many as the first punk song). On the lighter, poppier side, you might check out “Squeezebox”

Many schools no longer have music. I personally think we have seen an increase in violence because of it clearly it’s not the only reason but band and music classes were where we all hung out those of us who didn’t stay between the lines and fit in any particular box. Give them guitars, not guns.

More than any other band of the rock era, The Who were a visual act. You NEED to see them. Check out the clip of them playing “A quick One While He’s Away” at The Rolling Stones’ Rock ‘n’ Roll Circus in 1968, and the clip of them playing “Young Man Blues” at the Isle of Wight in 1970.

If you haven't heard The Who's most recent studio album called "WHO" which was released in 2019, you should. My favorite song on "WHO" is "Beads On One String". The Who's "Tommy" album is considered by many to be the First "Rock Opera" . The Who were playing the same circuits as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones . By the late 60's bands like Cream, and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, were really shaking up the British Music Scene, and quite literally, scaring the Hell out of bands like the Who! After hearing Hendrix play, most British Guitarists wondered if they should just hang up their guitars! It turned out, that Jimi was a shy, nice guy, who was more than willing to share what he had learned with other guitar players. The Beatles put out the "Sgt. Pepper" album, the Stones released "Beggars Banquet" and the Who released "Tommy" by 1969, Rock had entered a stage where albums were to become more than a collection of songs with ine or 2 hits. The Concept Album was born and the Musicianship was pushing the envelope, it seemed, with each new album! Bands like Pink Floyd , Jethro Tull , and the Moody Blues were expanding beyond Rock, into "Progressive" sounds. In America, the British Invasion had reintroduced Blues to the Charts, and Bands like The Allmann Brothers, ZZ Top, Johnny Winters, would hit the Music Scene with Southern Rock. And now it was the 70's!

That drummer as you call him, is the infamous Keith Moon. A million stories about his escapades and all are true. I believe this is his best work. Along with Pete Townshend who wrote this album in its entirety. Roger Daltrey sang magnificently. John (Thunderfingers) Entwhistle on bass. This is an epic album that I wore out when I was in high school when it came out. Still one of my top 5 stranded on an island albums. I was lucky enough to see them live. twice. The last time they did the whole Quadrophenia album live. 11 musicians on stage. Pete is an utter genius. Yes we were lucky and it's great to see another generation getting into it.

Keith basically invented heavy rock drumming. He was in The WHO from age 17 till his untimely death at the age of 32 [alcohol]. What makes Keith such a great drummer to listen to is his musicality. He really played around the music in a pretty exceptional way. Plus his energy was insane. Wished I’d been lucky enough to see the whole play live before he died. Easily one of the best rock bands of all time. Quadrophonia and Tommy are stand out albums, but don’t ignore The Who’s Next and ‘Live at Leeds’. My Generation is probably their signature piece and still sounds fresh now, despite being recorded in 1965. They were possibly THE pioneers of heavy rock.

The Who is one of the greatest bands of all time. Pete Townsend is often overlooked as one of the great songwriters of the era. Check out some of the live videos. At their height, they were a premier live act…a force of nature. Check out the entire Who’s Next album. For me it’s a perfect album with ever song great. For a live performance, many will suggest Won’t Get Fooled Again but for my money, Young Man Blues from the Isle Of Wight 1970 is a perfect example of the band in concert

Lee, you are 💯 on the money when you said the 70’s was a great time to experience the music. Most of the comments really nailed it. Won’t Get Fooled Again live is fantastic, Keith’s drumming is outstanding. Quadrophenia is a great 4 side concept album, right up there with “The Lamb…” Ironically I didn’t see many comments on “Tommy” which was considered the first Rock Opera. Off the charts, I had the pleasure of seeing in preformed live as a play several time. Incredible. They are such a talented band. Saw them live, unfortunately a couple of months after Keith died. They canceled the entire tour except 1 show at MSG in NYC and 1 show at Wembley stadium in London. Awesome.

Wow! This is your first exposure to The Who!? They are fucking legendary! THE greatest live band that ever hit a stage Keith Moon is regarded in the top 5 drummers of all time!!! John Entwistle (The Ox) - top 5 bassists. Daltrey vocals - excellent Pete Townsend guitarist, power chord, and writer extraordinaire. This was the 2nd of their Rock Operas (one was not completed and released as a regular LP). Tommy was the first one.

Do yourself a big favor and sit down and listen to this whole album, from start to finish. One of the greatest rock albums ever. All written and conceived by Pete Townshend, who plays all guitar and keyboard parts, and sings quite a bit as well. He was at his absolute peak back then, as was the band. This is the finale on the album, and it definitely has that feel at the end.

Quadrophenia is for me (and many) the culmination of Pete's artistic, lyrical vision, a rock opera, an art rock/prog rock wonder, this album is huge. Keith Moon was an extraordinary drummer and also, maybe the poster boy for rockn' roll excess. He was the quintessential bad boy . Drugs, alcohol trashing hotel rooms. He infamously got so loaded during one concert that he couldn't continue, and the band had to enlist a volunteer from the audience to finish the gig on drums. The young man did a great job. There is a video of this on KZbin. Sadly, Moon's excesses finally did him in, and he died in 1978 from an overdose. A real shame because he was among the best rock drummers ever.

One of the many reasons these Brit bands are so good is that they learned their craft playing gigs every night of the week , in grotty clubs and pubs and were expected to play really well. It was called, paying your dues, and superb playing was the only thing that mattered. They also soaked up lots of different influences from rock n roll to blues, folk and even classical. You just needed open ears and lots of talent.

Pete Townshend wrote most of The WHO’s music. He also performed on guitar, piano, keys, violin, ukulele and other instruments. Kit Lambert produced most of their albums and managed the group as well. He was the son of the founder/music director of The Royal Ballet, Constant Lambert. This prob accounts for the classical elements and complex, layered arrangements in their music. Tommy in 1968 was a full Legnth musical film featuring The Who’s music as well as Roger Daltrey playing the lead role. Considered the first rock opera, it employed all of the elements of musical theatre with a dark tongue in cheek perspective on life in the industrial north of England. It features Tina Turner and other iconic artists. Def worth a viewing/listening if you want to dive as deep as it goes into their musical/performance catalogue.

The Beatles stopped touring after 1966 for two reasons - one they were sick of it but two because of Sgt. Pepper their music was too complicated to reproduce on stage. In 1968 The Who's manager told Pete Townsend to create something that could easily be performed live on stage so that they could tour with it & boost album sales. That's when Townsend came up with the rock opera "Tommy" (performed new at Woodstock). Then came "Who's Next" another GOAT rock albums. Then Townsend tried stretching out even further by creating a rock symphony "Quadrophenia". All three of these albums must be listened to in their entirety!
