The sheet music for this is readily available. It is the most insane thing you will ever see in your life. Nested tuplets, especially the last 4 bars and the 11 note tuplet near the end - there is a reason this has been called one of the most complicated pieces of music ever written and it is a staple of modern orchestral music.

I was going to say , please let those who don’t know , that this is Dweezil’s band , keeping his father’s music alive , albeit with some of Frank’s bands alumni . And to think he had to battle with his siblings ( who were in charge of the Zappa Family Trust which owns the rights ) to keep playing this music , is as mind boggling as it was sad . Thankfully tho they have settled those differences and Dweezil and his remarkable band plays on . Let’s have a lot more love for Dweezil and his cohort please folks 👏👏

The Zappa Family Trust (Pretty much Ahmet and Diva in control) sold EVERYTHING to UMG. Dweezil doesn't have any plans to continue with Zappa Plays Zappa, sadly. If he wants to go back on tour again, he would likely have to pay a handsome licensing fee to UMG for the right to play the music and use the name.

Terry Bozzio posted a picture of a torn muscle in one of his arms. His arm was black. Black like The Black Page that this track is titled. When Frank wrote this for Terry, he told him to practice it a little each day. Two weeks later, Terry came into the studio and hammered it out for Frank. Frank's reaction: "Bozzio, you're a fkn genius!" Frank wrote music to the strengths and limits (and pushed those limits) of any given band member at the time. Because he changed members frequently, the next drummer had to be able to play this. I'm not a musician, but I'd ask that just because a previous otherworldly musician was able to master any given piece, does that mean that the next guy had to? It did in Frank's band. To quote a line from A Little Green Rosetta, "They're pretty good musicians."

@@L33Reacts You want to hear a weird coincidence? Noting that Frank died on Dec. 4th, we go back in history to Dec. 4th, 1971. Exactly 22 years to the date before Frank passed, he and the band played in a place called The Casino in Montreux, Switzerland. You probably know the song Smoke On The Water by Deep Purple. That song is about the fire at that venue as the result of "Some stupid with a flare gun burned the place to the ground." Frank Zappa was playing a concert where the fire broke out and it could've killed him. It obviously didn't, but the coincidence of the date is interesting.

Zappa wrote the black page for Bozzio, who was in his band at the time ( a teenager Vai was in the band too) . Zappa knew one or two things about writing music , Terry knew as well just a little bit about readind charts , so the challenge was swrved : Zappa filled a white page with ink to chart this little something for his drummer to perform... not bad as a little song .

@@bhidtrSw.65qqhwtsloUtDeklbne15 Young Dweezil came from the school of Eddie Van Halen, and, in fact, they were friends. EVH visited the Zappa home on occasion. Before Dweezil embarked on the Zappa Plays Zappa excursion in 2006, from whence this video comes, he basically threw out everything he knew about playing guitar and dedicated himself to learning how his father played. Frank had a unique take on the instrument, and Dweezil wanted to get it right. Like a Drill Seargent in the Marine Corps, completely breaking the recruits down and building them back up from scratch, that was pretty much the approach Dweezil took to the guitar. And it proved very worthwhile. Some folks would say that Dweezil Plays Zappa is a sham because there was only one Frank Zappa, and that the genius of Frank was his improvisational skills and that you never know what he'll conduct the band to do, can't be replicated by anybody, which is true. But if you want to hear somebody play and sound as close to Frank as you can, this is the stuff right here.

It's called the Black Page because after Frank meticulously wrote it for Terry Bozzio to play, the page of sheet music looked "black" because of all those wild notes! Frank called it "statistically dense"! Talk about difficult to play! When Frank approached Terry after he wrote it, he said "Bozzio, what'dya think of this"? And Terry actually looked at the sheet music, freaked out and F'cking played it cold!! This is Dweezi Zappa, Frank's son, who formed this band that he called Zappa Plays Zappa in tribute of his father! In the concert, Dweezil plays a video of his dad on a large screen behind the drums playing something amazing on the very guitar that Dweezil was using during the show, and, Dweezil played along with his dad note by note. Afterwards, his voice was shaky with obvious emotion. Dweezil said that after picking his band members for this tour, they practiced for over TWO YEARS to get everything in the set absolutely down before going out on tour. Terry Bozzio was a major influence in my drumming since 1975-1979 where I personally believe he was at his best which is what Frank brought out of him! After Terry came Vinnie Colaiuta! He ain't no slouch either!!

This was originally written as a (written!) drum solo for Bozzio (The Black Page #1). And then Frank decided to add some other instruments and a melody to it, which made it all the more enjoyable (and weird). The title of the piece derives from the fact that all those polyrhytms and demisemiquavers turns the note page all black.

Steve Vai, 18-year-old Berklee College of Music student at the time, listened to The Black Page from the Zappa In New York album and was blown away by it. He took it upon himself to transcribe all the notes to that monster composition, to prove that he could read music, and sent it to Zappa's management company along with a cassette tape of his guitar playing. Frank told him to get his butt out to LA to audition, which was grueling and for which Vai thought he surely failed. Frank told him, "You passed the audition." But, as you said, at 18, Frank knew he was too young and not ready for the rigors of the road. Frank hired him to transcribe his guitar solos from the records (because they were never written, always improvised), and the result was The Frank Zappa Guitar Book. Vai worked for Frank in that capacity until Fall of '80 when he finally did go out on tour. Sure enough, as Frank predicted, Vai suffered from exhaustion, dehydration and other "touring can make you crazy" maladies, including an encounter with groupie Laurel Fishman that included a dalliance with a banana and a hairbrush, as immortalized in the song Stevie's Spanking.

Vai and Bozio played this with Frank. Frank was a composer and conductor. He rehearsed his groups until they could play every son perfectly, then he would direct them in different directions. Let's do this song as reggae tonight, etc. So many leading musicians came through his group. Genius, yes. If you compare the score for 'The Black Page I & II' and Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, you will see the nested '-tuplets' throughout.

Then there is 2. The Black Page 2 (Ska) with guitar solo (Which eventually contained guitar solo's for 2 other songs named Them or Us and Chalk Pie) and then there is 3. The Black Page (computer version) it was a flexidisc given away for free in a computer magazine. And last but not least "The Back Page the New Age version" from the 88 shows, so... just with the song The Black Page...lol... you could be here for a WEEK reacting to different versions.

I'm 63, and I have been to 5 Frank Zappa concerts in the 1970's, back at the Uptown Theater in Chicago. Dweezil was just a lil kid then. Maybe 5 or 6 years old. We were always tripping on acid when we went. I think we paid 6 or 7 bucks a ticket for balcony seats. It was good acid too. lol I haven't seen Dweezil play. It just wouldn't be the same. Steve and Terry are way too old now.

Bozzio is simply amazing. Isaw Rush 6 times live in their prime between 1979 and 1986, and as much as I love Neil Peart I hate it when people say he’s the GOAT. The notion of GOAT doesn’t seem to make to me. I saw Bruford, Palmer, Collins, Barlow and Bozzio in their prime multiple time, and they’re all as good, if not better. And from that list and all the rock drummers that I have seen Bozzio is probably the most impressive one that I have seen technically, And he is, along with Bruford, the most innovative. I won’t even mention all the amazing drummers in jazz.

Yeah, so much talented drummers out there, impossible to say which is the best. Though a Zappa fan, I'm very fond of Dave Weckl's smooth drumming.

The most amazing thing about this, to me, is that FZ imaged this - then wrote it out. So all in his head. Yes, two composers have been called genius in their lifetime - Zappa and Fripp. Most things FZ touch golden... except when he wrote stuff at this level for full orchestra ...too much... but can highly recommend any track from _One Size Fits All_ (rock) or _Grand Wazoo_ (1940's big band; well it was until FZ got his hands on it) Greta fun! :)

Zappa wrote this over several months, every time he added a new section he gave it to Terry to experiment with and learn. And of course, he had to expand it to full orchestra.

Steve Vai has some videos on the "nested tuplet" thing Zappa did. It's not quite polyrhythms in the way of 2 overlapping time signatures, but how many notes fit into like a half note. Like a 5 tuplet fit into the quarter note of the pulse behind it. It's the 'falling down the stairs' sound to those fills

nice reax! a bit sideways, but to hear Terry Bozzio in an utter monster track, band = UK, song = Carrying No Cross. I see you've done UK's In The Dead Of Night off their first album, but this one off their second is maybe their magnum opus, and Bozzio on drums. best to go straight to studio version... best YT is currently MyMuseMoviesAndMusic. live versions with video are terrible quality... live versions without, ehh, just go studio. maybe my ATF track that hardly anyone seems to know about. ;-)

Explore Zappa AFTER the Mothers, from his best period. Hot Rats - 1969 onward. I think his absolute hardcore best compositions are from 1969 - 1979, but there's plenty of awesome material after that. And it took a collection of the most masterful, dedicated band members to play his compositions. Sadly he pretty much gave up guitar playing after 1988, preferring to use the Syncalvier instead of a band.

Nice Reaction. As others have probably mentioned this is "Zappa Plays Zappa"; Generally excellent interpretations. I also happen to be a Beefheart fan. My comment is that even though Zappa and Don Van Vliet were H.S. friends and they did a tour together, they aren't very much alike. Zappa was the consummate musician, capable of playing (and writing) in a wide range of genres: Beefheart could not read nor write music. His strengths were in his poetry and visual arts. He did have enough musical talent to create his own relatively narrow but unique sound that was loosely called "dada rock" . Also, Spotlight Kid (IMO) is not one of his better albums. My favorite is "Lick My Decals, Baby" . His 1st album (produced by Zappa) is also notorious " Trout Mask Replica" .You might like "The Blimp" from that one. If you are looking for something more commercial try the song ""Big Eyed Beans from Venus" from the "Clear Spot" album.
