It’s not called Black Friday because of injuries; it’s called Black Friday because when a business is profitable, it is said to be “in the black” ( as opposed to being “in the red”, i.e. at a loss).

American here: I think it's STUPID to call the day after Thanksgiving Black Friday. It started as some sort of marketing scheme (perpetrated by people who never learned history, I guess.) It wasn't called that when I was young. In the past, calling the day "Black" meant that something bad had happened that day. " Black Tuesday refers to a precipitous drop in the value of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) on Oct 29, 1929. Black Tuesday marked the beginning of the Great Depression, which lasted until the beginning of World War II." "Stock Market Crash: The first contemporary global financial crisis unfolded on October 19, 1987, a day known as “Black Monday,” when the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 22.6 percent."

The story behind thanksgiving is this… The first American Thanksgiving is thought to have been a three-day harvest feast in 1621 in Plymouth Colony. The Wampanoag people helped the Pilgrims, who had arrived the year before on the Mayflower, prepare the meal after they ran out of food and it was too late to plant crops. The Wampanoag taught the Pilgrims how to grow corn and catch fish. The pilgrims struggled and almost died from starvation until the Native Americans helped. Some people won’t celebrate because they still believe that Americans are living on stolen land so it’s evolved into a holiday of being thankful for what we do have.

Garbage disposals are pretty clutch, actually. You don't throw whole chunks of food down the drain. (We still scrape the big stuff off into a trash can.) It just stops the sink from getting clogged by smaller scraps, vegetable peels, and cooking residue. It's basically a grinder (food processor), and you can clean them with ice or special soap pellets to stop them from getting gross. The waste from a garbage disposal just goes to the normal sewage system or septic tank, just like a toilet. It's more to stop the sink from getting clogged than to throw large amounts of stuff away.

Mistake at 14:00 Black friday didn't get its name because of the violence, it got its name because being 'in the black' or 'in the red' is a measure of a businesses profitability. Black friday got its name because businesses that are 'in the black' would have massive sales because they'd already made their yearly sale quotas by the end of November. Its a way for them to liquidate their older goods so they can bring in new goods for the new year

They don’t stink if you clean them and that’s easy to do with some baking soda and a couple sliced lemons and maybe an orange put that in there altogether a couple times a week and run it for like 15 -30 seconds. You can also add some and coffee grounds and egg shells sometimes if you want. It also depends on how old the Disposal is but they are super easy to replace. So if you clean them they don’t smell. I’m sure they make chemical cleaners as well but I’ve just done it this way for so long I guess it’s what I’m used to. 😊 I imagine when you use a bleach based cleanser in your sink every week that will also run down through it so it’s really no big deal. And it doesn’t get stinky and potentially dangerous from the bacteria 🦠 that breads in your bin from all of the food scraps and worse if raw meat or raw meat packets that are thrown in the bin that kids and pets can get into that can get them very sick, very easily. You can’t things like 👍🏻 your fingers or hands, paper towels, bones, metal or hard things into them other then that they are AWESOME!! 🤩 👏 😎🤩👏👏 As far as being bad for the environment they aren’t any better tied up in aplastic bin liners…. Unless you want to compost scraps in your garden which is stinky and full of bacteria that can cause illnesses and pest infestations those scraps are just scraps. Another reason they are “banned” in other countries is because they don’t have the infrastructure that can handle scraps in pipes placed a very long time ago and would be very expensive to upgrade.

7:58 plumber here. We have one pipe coming out of the house, sewer pipe. It takes everything that goes down our drains, kitchen sink, bathroom sink, toilet, laundry sink, floor drains, and it either goes to a municipal sewage treatment plant or a septic tank. Depending on your setup. And no we don’t recommend you put food scraps into a food waste grinder. It’s mean for the little bits of food on your plate after throwing most of it in the trash. And typically if you have a septic tank we don’t recommend using a food waste grinder. It’ll fill the tank up too quickly. Not everyone here has a food waste grinder. Also you have to be careful what you put down the drain. We say avoid the F.O.G. Fats, oil and grease will play havoc on your pipes and sewage system in the streets.

So a few things on that part, the garbage disposal isn't banned in Europe for environmental reasons, its because the pipes and water infrastructure isn't made to deal with it and their sewer systems are more difficult to clear blockages out of. They also largely seperate food waste from inorganic waste over there and it is treated differently. In America that's not a normal thing for a local service to provide. The food waste in America, if it goes down the disposal, goes to an aerobic sedimentation tank, where it can break down in the presence of oxygen which is the better way for it to break down from an environmental/climate perspective.

Love your Mum! She’s the best! Every Emergency Room is required to see you regardless of your ability to pay. And many people just don’t pay. So, if you cannot afford a doctor, you often go to the Emergency Room. The food goes down the regular drain. Then the particles are filtered out at the water plant. They have to filter other stuff out anyway, so it isn’t awful, but it keeps watery food from dripping into waste bins and it gives food waste an initial crushing and dicing, which means it takes less time to break down. I do like your mum’s idea of being able to pull it out for the garden, though!

The concept of Thanksgiving was to remember the blessing the early Pilgrims received when the local natives helped them get through their first harsh winter. People used to celebrate it in early November until Harry S. Truman made it an official holiday the -last- 4th Thursday in November. This helped kick off the 30-shopping days countdown until Christmas.

Forget the above, and any talk about about a harvest festival (all still partially true). The message of the pilgrims was: "We get to survive this winter!!" Regarding the garbage disposal systems in the US: A garbage disposal grinds up food and other organic materials that goes down the sink and sends it to the sewage system. What happens to food put down the garbage disposal, it will travel with the wastewater to the treatment plants where anaerobic digesters capture the methane gas produced during decomposition and convert it to electricity or biofuels.

The solid plastics, cans, and glass go to curbside recycling, and my plastic bags go in the plastic bag recycle bin at the entrance to the grocery. I don't give the garbagemen my yard waste/grass clipping. That also goes into the compost, and is used as mulch. I can build up that pile over the year, but I can also use the whole pile in fall/spring to cover/amend the beds. In 1-2 seasons it all disappears back into the ground, and as a bonus I had a little flush of "wild/store" button mushrooms last season all over the compost pile that had sat there a year or so.

As an American it blows my mind that other countries don't have garbage disposals. I would never want to live without one. You don't scrape large items from your plate into the sink; you still scrape it into the garbage (or "bin" as you say). But you can rinse off plates that have small scraps of food in the sink and not worry that it will clog up your drains. The disposal grinds it all up and sends it into the sewer system with all the other waste. It doesn't smell at all because it's washed away. If it ever does get a little dirty, you just grind up a few lemon peels and you're good to go.

In the US the "grey" water from sinks & bathtubs go to water treatment plants where special enzymes & bacteria "eat" the solid waste. Water from the w.c., "solid" waste from toilets go to separate treatment with different bacterial & chemical treatment bc of the potential bacterial/viral contaminants. @@iluminameluna I'm not sure where that happens in the USA. Most goes all into a sewer pipe if your local community provides it, In rural areas it goes into a septic tank where it breaks down (enzymes do that and stay in tank). As it breaks down, the liquid flows out through piping (with holes or spaces) to leak out under the drain field. This give you an area that gets water and nutrients continuously.... stays green there no matter the lack of rain

There is an aggressive, abrasive women behind glass that sees each patient as they arrive, takes a few notes and then tells you to take a seat and wait until you are called. The waiting room is filled with people bleeding, infants screaming and my poor father, dying of cancer who is in pain and only wants to talk to a nurse or doctor. After 3 hours of not seeing anyone get inside, we chose to simply go home. This happened twice while I was taking care of my dad and at the funeral I shared the story with my brother who witnessed it once himself. Some say it was because my father was the wrong color, but it wasn't because of money. He had MediCare and Blue Cross, plus a good bank account. They just didn't care - simple as that. It might just be Kansas City though. We had good care in Texas.

@L3WG Reacts Thanksgiving is celebrated as a remembrance of a feast that was had by some of America's first Settlers, (before we even were America), and some of the Indians who helped them survive here by sharing food & showing them how to grow food etc. So our Thanksgiving feast is an homage to those roots of our Founding. -Gathering with friends and family at the end of our growing season, & focusing on how grateful we are for each other & the blessings we've experienced that year. In recent years, some have tried to dispute that this feast ever took place, bc some want to hate on their own country & rewrite history- but despite the fact that there were some settlers that treated the Indian ppl poorly as well as some Indians that attacked & killed some settlers-- original journal entries, letters & documents exist that confirm the friendly & mutually beneficial relationships that existed & yes, they did have some Harvest feasts together.

Garbage disposal.... You're not supposed to put large things such as bones and such in the disposal. It is mainly for when you rinse your dishes after a meal, you turn it on and it grinds down any solid food that might go down the drain to prevent clogs. As long as you keep it clean and clear you never have any odor issues. I regularly fill the sink with soapy water and then drain it with the disposal on and it cleans anything that might be left.

My mom had a lawyer after an umbrella accident from starbucks. They never checked the latches and a few were broken. On a windy day, sitting outside, one flew up and hit her dead in the head, snapped her head back so hard she had herniated disks in her neck with a few shards broken off, and Starbucks tried to get out of it. That's when they found out a few other ones were broken by checking the others. She got surgery in her neck to replace a disk and get the shards out, but they had to go through the front of her neck. She got a really good lawyer and she was settled with a good price. So yeah, lawyers can be very common because they are for accidents and such as well.

The garbage disposal also helps keep your trash bin from smelling. Food waste goes down the drain into the sewer or septic tank. Used to have one where I used to live. This house doesn't have one. Sure do miss it! And yes some municipalities put fluoride in their water (or used to) to promote healthy teeth. I'm 59 and when I was little they also used to have programs in school where they'd have you swish with fluoride once a week if you lived in a rural area (had well water, thus unflouridated). My husband was born & raised in Chicago. I was born in North GA and raised in rural Southern Appalachia (NC/TN). I've had to have less dental work than he has (knock on wood!)

Canada here and we have all these things, and we're outside the USA. So far. Drug adverts are very regulated as they can make zero references to illnesses or cures, but they are advertised (Ozympic for instance). We don't have spray cheese any more that I've seen but we used to. The "garbage disposal" is often called a garburator and I have one. It goes to the normal sewer drain. Banned in many cities because it's hard on waste treatment. We also use a compost bin but the garburator is very convenient for wetter waste like soup. We have college sports but not televised as in the USA. We have Black Friday sales which is a thing in Canada, teeth whitening, solo cups (using one right now), free refills in some restaurants. Flying the Canadian flag isn't as common as in the USA and there is a different vibe associated with flying one (whole story about truckers and border crossings....).

A couple of things. The name of Black Friday actually comes from the sales push that many American retailers have after Thanksgiving in order to get their revenue out of the red and into the black. It is more related to a push to increase sales as opposed to being synonymous with negative behavior. And Thanksgiving grew out of a story told about the first English settlers of America who needed the help of the American Indians to survive their first winter. Legend has it that after the first successful harvest with the assistance of the Indians, the settlers held a feast to give thanks to God for their bounty and their survival. We don’t give gifts, it is just a day to gather as families and friends to share a meal and good time together.

It's also profitable for the city. The food bits are mixed with toilet water when they go to the water treatment plant. After composting it becomes a good fertilizer which the city will sell to recoup costs and even make a profit. I was shocked to discover that Europe doesn't have anything like that. But then after spending some time in Spain and Italy I realized that their water systems were no where near as good as the US and some places still used septic systems inside the city itself.
