When we celebrate, it’s about freedom overall, first and foremost. We are no longer celebrating ‘against’ our now-beloved UK brothers and sisters. The soldiers of each of our nations have sacrificed their lives together in the name of liberty many times. You guys are included in our celebrations. Let Freedom ring!!! 💪

I lived in England for 6 years. I was stuck on the M25 in traffic one 4th of July. The lorry driver beside me signaled to roll my window down. When I did he told me Happy 4th. Then he told me he could tell by my car ( steering wheel was on the left side) I was American. It made me laugh and also in a way, made me feel good he acknowledged it.

I spent a couple of 4th of Julys in London for study abroad. Brits really didn't care at all. However, the college we were housed in hosted a July 4th BBQ for American students. It was so lovely that England set up a celebration of America's independence from England. It was quite considerate. Love you England. No hard feelings.😊

The first thing I do every 4th of July is thank all the military veterans past, present and future, for the wonderful freedom and security I experience, living in the USA. Their courage and commitment never ceases to amaze me. Then it's backyard picnic parties with food, drink and yard games with family and friends. Of course the fireworks are so fun and beautiful to watch!

Our (grown) children came over for a supper of hot dogs, chips, watermelon, baked barbecue beans, deviled eggs, star-shaped cookies, and berry cobbler. We played table games, laughed, and talked. When the sky got dark, we set off fireworks in our front yard. Some of the neighbors came outside to watch our fireworks display. Several others walked or drove past our yard and called out to wish us a happy Fourth of July. From elsewhere in the neighborhood we could hear other people setting off fireworks. It was a happy and memorable day!

When I was a kid there was a recreation center / playground right across from my house. 4th of July was a big deal. There was a bike parade for us kids. We decorated our bikes as best we could and did a slow ride down the street to show off. They also had an egg drop competition where we put an egg in a container with lots of padding and one by one they got dropped from the roof of the building. If your egg didn't break you won a chocolate bar.

Both today the 5th and yesterday it was 108° F or 42.2° C, I live near Death Valley in Nevada, I have some issues with the heat, it wasn't hot enough to set off the worst of. My issues but if I don't have to leave that AC when it hit I don't. I had no idea before moving here 4 years ago, but when it gets over 115° F or 46° C, after just a couple minutes in the sun and heat, I develop blood blisters that then pop and bleed, the. First summer I was living her is when I found out and I was in the sun and it was 116° F for about 3 minutes, when I was asked if I was okay, I said sure why do you ask? Then I was told I was bleeding from 2 spots on my head and 1 on my arm and another on my leg. After getting into AC I started trying to find the problem and while looking found about 5 other blisters 2 that had filled with blood and while looking for more another on my leg burst. I told my doctor about it. He said to stay inside when it's too hot, and if it happens again go straight to the ER. So now if it is over 110° F I just don't leave the house, and 108° is just getting too close to my limit is I don't need to go anywhere.

My hometown, population 5000, annual 4th celebration: Early morning "Firecracker 10K" race through town, parade a couple of hours later, then games, vendors, beer tents, picnics and live bands all day at the park next to Lake Michigan. Finally, after 10:00 pm (because that's how late summer nights are), there's a fireworks show. When I was a kid, EVERYONE who moved away went home for the 4th. It's not as big of a deal anymore, but most of the festivities stayed the same.

I live out in the country (in the midwest) near a small town of about 1200 people that always has a big parade. This morning, my husband (who is on the volunteer fire department) drove one of the fire trucks in the parade and my son rode with him & threw candy out to all the kids on the parade route. In the afternoon, at the park in town, there will be a carnival type atmosphere with activities for the kids (donkey rides, small train ride, bouncy house...), different food vendors will be there, a band will play at the bandstand, and then there are different community events such as last year they had BINGO or a craft fair. In the evening once it gets dark the town has fire works. We a lucky that on our farm, we have the perfect view of the fireworks from our driveway. They are also having a band/street dance downtown for the over 21 crowd this evening. Then you throw in family/friend gatherings and bbq's and it makes for a fun day!

There's usually a parade no matter how small the town. If you're a band person like I am, you'll be involved in either marching in the parade or giving an outside concert in a park or in the town square. SO. MUCH. JOHN PHILIP SOUSA! There's lots of food, grilled or barbecued, and watermelon and homemade ice cream. We do this all day. At night, we sit outside, listen to more concert bands, and listen to Tchaikowski's 1812 Overture. When the cannons go off, the fireworks start. The fireworks go on for about twenty minutes, and you know it's the finale when the entire sky is filled with explosions in rapid succession. Then you go home and comfort your traumatized pets while someone will keep shooting fireworks past midnight.

Some very dear friends had a big BBQ.....we had ribs....brisket...bbq chicken...and two kinds of bbq sausage....potato salad...baked beans...two kinds of salads....corn on the cob....and three different kinds of desert.....lots of ice cold sweet tea...and lots of fun and laughter.....we ate and visited...and some people got up a fun card game....and we took food to a homeless man and some sick friends....and came back to the party. We ended the evening by watching a big fire works show whileistening to patriotic songs on the radio....it was a beautiful day......❤ Jenni from Houston

4th of July is more like a week celebration than a day. Cities all have different things going on during different days during that week such as parades, carnivals, rodeos, bbqs, fireworks etc. We are celebrating at home with picnic foods, swimming, hanging out.

It rained all morning, so we stayed inside. When for pizza for dinner. Then drove downtown, parked (free because of the holiday!) and walked to one of the parks. Enjoyed the beautiful night weather, 70s, clear sky. Then Fireworks! followed by massive traffic jam to get home. Very midwestern 4th.

When I was a kid, in the 50’s, we had huge celebrations in the park, the entire community was there (well, almost). Today, there is a parade (same, but much larger community) fireworks etc… but without me. It’s just too freakin’ HOT 🥵 !!! Over 100° f. Happy Birthday America. I’m staying in and microwaving some corn dogs.

When it comes to 1776, we did win against the British, however it was not a big big win. King George decided the colonialists were deep down Brits at heart. He saw the war was too costly to continue on, so he decided to pull back. He thought that we would fail, and would come back to British control. That didn’t happen. What DID happen was America thrived and grew. When this happened, the King realized his error and came back to try again. To us, we know this as “The War of 1812.” By then, the French saw us as allies and lent us the use of their Navy. On top of that, America had formed a strong government and military. When the Brits tried to invade again, they lost… and they lost BIG. I do not rub this in anyone’s face. The British are our most important allies. The past is the past. We have moved on and are forever friends.

One of the huge differences between 1776 and 1812 was the 2nd Amendment. Americans were not only permitted, but encouraged to own guns. Lots and lots of guns. There may have been more guns than people in America in 1812, but there definitely is today.

But…. 1776 is when US signed Declaration of Independence. Actually gaining it often takes longer but the decision was made official at that time, even if not recognized by the king.

Losing that battle was the best thing for England. Consider this, if we were still part of the British empire, we could not have done what we did to help you guys win WWII. It's highly likely that if not for our independence, we would all have been conquered by the German and Japanese. It was not our military might that won WWII, it was our industrial might. We transported supplies to you guys with boats known as " Liberty Ships". In 1943 & 1944, we were building a new ship every 10 days. A several hundred foot long ship every 10 fricking days. We were building ships faster than they could be sunk. And we were building airplanes faster than they could be shot down.

Yes, you gave us the Beatles but where would they have been without Elvis leading the way?!?!? I LOVE the Fourth when I was a kid!!! My hometown was said to have one of the best parades in the US and it was better than Christmas! We would head into town (we lived in the country) and find the perfect parking spot by the A & P Grocery store underneath the maple trees. We had a pick-up truck so Dad would set up chairs in the bed of the truck for him and Mom to use and my brothers and sister and I would take towels to reserve our spot on the curb so we could be up close and personal when the candy was tossed our way. As for the parade, there was marching bands, police cars and fire trucks with sirens going, All the big shots in local politics riding in convertibles. In the later years I got to wave to my little brother as he marched with the high school band which was really hard for him as he was wearing a wool uniform and it was HOT! The parade took about 90 minutes and then it would take another 15 minutes or so to get out of the traffic and head for home. Lunch: My aunts, uncles and cousins would head over to our house for lunch, and it was so good! Fried chicken, baked beans (not those horrid Heinz beans but homemade bbq beans - so good!), potato salad, pies, and more food than I can remember. As the day turned to evening, the company would leave and Dad would make a big bonfire where we would make s'mores while Dad told us ghost stories. And if the ghost stories were not enough to scare the bejesus out of me, when it got dark, Dad would put the ladder up against the house and we would climb onto the roof so we could see the fireworks from all the towns surrounding us (about 5 or 6 if i remember correctly). While waiting for the fire to die down we would play with firecrackers and sparklers. An exhausting day, but what a wonderful time. ♥♥♥🎊🎖🔥🔥🌌

Yup, King George III was king at the time. I believe he is known as the Mad King? I heard some gossip about that. But the thing is, Britian was pretty hard stung by losing the colonies over here and tried again to get them back in our war of 1812, where the Red Coat army destroyed Washington DC. We Americans are definitely like a rebellious child rebelling against the 'Motherland' if you will. And look at us now? As close as siblings in many things, including each other's defense in most cases, at least in my Lifetime.

After BBQ, we all watched fireworks from the roof of our house (flat roof; perfectly safe!) - there was a thrilling 360 degree display for hours. Then back down to set off our own in while eating watermelon. Everyone dressed in red, white and blue. Older two kids were allowed to light the fireworks with the dads hovering. When the occasional car would roll slowly by, they would roll down their windows and we would all call out “Happy Fourth” to each other. Small town America at its best. I love my country!!!

For a long time while I was growing up, my family would go camping every July 4th, and we'd take some fireworks with us. We'd find a clearing, make a campfire, eat some hotdogs and s'mores, and set off some roman candles, buzzing bees, sparklers and fountains. Only the adults got to handle the rockets and mortars, obviously, for safety reasons. It was really neat, and we made lots of great memories.

One of the best 4th celebrations i went to was in colonial Williamsburg Virginia. There was a sea of people on this humongous field , everybody sitting or laying on blankets. When the fireworks started all the people were saying "Ooo and Aah" in unison it was so hilarious. Then there was the fireworks display in Wellington County Club in Florida...they were going off right over our heads ...bits of paper falling on us. What a great show.❤

The thing to remember there was over 100 years of grievances between the colonies and the Crown. The flash point that pushed it over to open warfare was when British General Gage ordered firearms seized on April 19, 1775. Paul Revere's ride was to warn of the troops coming to seize firearms. It wasn't until a year later that the colonies finally agreed to Declare Independence.

Drinking today (not water) and staying inside with the TV on. I am one of the Combat Veterans from the U.S. that watches Lewis's reactions. To be fair it has been 19 years since I left Iraq, so loud noises and fireworks don't bother me as much as they did 10-15 years ago, especially if I am expecting for fireworks to happen. I know when I was a member of my local VFW they used to participate in 4th of July parades.

I used to have a big party and invited all of my employees, their spouses / significant others, and children to my house (50 - 70 people) for cold beverages and hot BBQ. The younger folks played a lot of games and shot off firecrackers during the day and then, when it got dark, I would put on a special playlist and light the fuse on a massive fireworks display. The fireworks would go off continually for about 45 minutes and it was an awesome spectacle (except that my dog wasn't too keen on the fireworks). I changed jobs and don't do it anymore, but for about 10 years, it was the talk of the office every year.

I was stationed with British soldiers in Kabul. We were on the same side. So 4th of July comes around, and at the dining facility, they had this big cake and decorations with 4th of July things. The British soldiers were in there kinda saying “it’s a bit much.” But they were super fun to banter with and there was never a moment of disrespect between the British and American soldiers. They ate the cake with us and we had laughs. We were happy to share it with them. The world needs to get on board with that.
