I had a buddy in H.S. in the early 70's (whose Mom was loaded and he pretty much got what he asked for). He had a '68 Camaro with an Ed Pink built L-88 engine. He had a 4.88:1 rear end ratio and the biggest 60 series tires available at the time and that car would burn the tires off in all 4 gears. He loved getting a buddy behind him at a stop light and would do such a burnout it would leave melted rubber in the guy's windshield.

Great sound that L-88 cam. I think they were around .590 to .600 inch lift. I have installed that same cam in some of my other Big Block Chevys. Even the dog liked the L-88. LOL!

ZORA DUNTOV was making L-88's in '66 for Roger Penski to race. You guys better check your REAL L-88 HISTORY. The program did so well in '66 that Duntov had some extra COPO L-88 Corvettes made so his CERTAIN friends could have one to race or drag race. I know because I ended up with a 1966 L-88 Corvette. These motors were dynoed at 552 horsepower, at least mine was and it was stock from GM. I have pics of the car and engine. FYI.

So, we're these 66 L-88 427 vetted that Zora was building for the racing programs and for a few friends, we're they VIN? Do they have titles and you can get them registered to drive on public roads? My grandpa was friends with a lot of the engineers on the 409 program in the late 50s and early 60s and he said some of the cars they got were just race cars. No VINS, no titles, couldn't get insurance etc, etc. Most of them just became parts cars because who wants a trailer queen! Lmao, you can only drive it at the track and that just sucks!

I've read it in a article , D. Gulstrand went to St Louis and pick up a L88 coupe and drove it back to Pennsylvania , where Penske had his race shop . Mr. Gulstrand explains that he was wrapped up in a blanket because it had no heater . This was the winter of 66 , January , they raced the car at Daytona . They called it a pre production prototype . Hell even in 65 Smokey Yunick had a article in HotRod mag on how to build one from spare parts using a 396 "high performance crank case " and gave all the part numbers . Anything is possible .

An L88 is supposed to be started with the hood open in case of backfire can damage the hood.
@thud9797
@thud9797 Жыл бұрын
I think there's something to this, the air filter was in the hood and the base on the engine had no spark arrestor so a backfire would burn right against the bare fiberglass hood. So everyone saying no, remember this is an L88 and was totally unique and no other car had such a unique air cleaner arrangement. And this might explain why the original 69 L88 hood (still had the Rockwell foil sticker) that I bought in Knoxville had the entire airbox section burned up.

I went over to his house, and he had s9me beautiful old vetted and other chevrolets. His 67 was a 427 tri power 435hp. Not an l88. Some people actually own these cars but know nothing about them. VERY POOR first start. VERY POOR....what you needed to do AND need to do, is incorporate a priming system so that you do not get those dry starts. SHAME ON YOU......When carbureted cars sit, gravity takes over. The priming system would have that started right away.
