This reminds me of a story the father of a man who married a relative once told me. Before he moved to the West, in the 70s, he had a degree from an EU country in computers. He was smart and when he moved to Australia, he had a wife and son to support. He was working as a mechanic and was told he could legitimize his foreign degree if he attended night school at University for six month for free (or a small fee, can't remember which) But his wife was upset and used the excuse "You would put me and your son at risk by not being with us at night." and other crap. So he never went to fix his degree in computer programming and regretted it for the rest of his life. Imagine back in the 70s what this man could have become with a computer programming degree. Only he had no support.

Sanitation workers actually do make more money (and have better union representation & health insurance) than freelance animation artists... This is the part I remember most after seeing it the first time, years ago, as a kid - Bob's inspiration to start a career as a cartoonist is not quite as glamorous as Ritchie's career path, but requires the same amount of discipline, patience and self-confidence to persevere. I like that in real life, he didn't throw away that animation art he found and kept it anyway.

Since I first saw this movie, I’ve always admired that handsome Mexican nerd. As a fellow latina cartoonist outsider, growing up I related to Bob so much. ♥️ While in middle school my family had huge issues with me drawing cartoons/anime, buying manga. They told me similar things Bobs family tells him here. 🥺💔 This movie is honestly difficult to watch because personally it’s like reopening old wounds. I hated seeing Bob in pain. You can tell he’s hurting inside throughout the movie & it’s so agonizing for me not being able to just jump into my tv screen to tell him, “Hey, your work is amazing. I support you. Let’s clean up your little art studio down here & draw together.” 🤗💓✍🏽 All Bob needed was for someone to cherish and support him like everyone did Richie. 😞 If only I was there by his side, I’d love him in EVERYONES place. 💕 If this biopic is anything to go by, then Bob definitely carries both his strength & pain in a similar way I do & that he fights his internal battles alone. I immediately had so much empathy for him.😢💔 My family has since come around. Now I’m a regular vendor in artist alleys at comic cons. I have a full time 9-5 job and I’m an artist on the side. I’ve since found so much newfound happiness engaging in the art community.😄 Bob Morales is one of the people I will always look up to in the art world. I owe him so much of my drive & a big reason I walk the path I tread today. I’m not sure if the real Bob ever pursued his dreams artistically but in my youth I told myself I was going to pursue art in some shape or form, no matter what obstacles I faced. You could say I’m doing it for us both in a way. 💞 Based on current Facebook/internet memes, it still seems like people only choose to see him as a borracho fu*k boi, but I never did. I understood him from the get go & I knew that he was much more than that. Nobody appreciates this man as a free spirited artist, but I do. I will always be thankful for the affect he had on my life. I wouldn’t be the artist/cartoonist I am without him. Bob will always be a part of me. I’ll love him forever. 🥹🎨🥰
