My first online ballet history presentation/lecture - "La Bayadère: After Petipa" (part 1)
In collaboration with Emiko Hirano and Yuko Oi, I presented my first online presentation in which I looked into the history of "La Bayadère" and how it changed throughout the 20th century until Sergei Vikharev and Alexei Ratmansky's respective historical productions aimed to show us the closet we can get to what Petipa created over 100 years ago.
Unfortunately, the introduction is missing, but here is the transcript:
"Marius Petipa is the one name that appears everywhere in classical ballet today because it was his contributions that ultimately shaped the art form into what it became. His ballets are performed worldwide, and they are the most popular members of the repertoire. However, almost all productions of the classics that are staged today are labelled as “choreography after Petipa”, but what does “after Petipa” mean? In quoting Doug Fullington, it can mean at least three things:
1. The choreography is based on Petipa’s original choreography.
2. The choreography is based on choreography by Petipa that was based on someone else’s choreography.
3. It is choreography in the school or style of Petipa, created by someone else after Petipa’s retirement.
The overall meaning of this label is that it is not entirely what Petipa did, or it is not what he did at all.
After Petipa’s retirement in 1904 and subsequently after his death in 1910, his ballets were more or less faithfully retained in the repertoire of the Imperial Theatre in Saint Petersburg, but in Moscow, they were staged in revised versions by Alexander Gorsky, which Petipa did not appreciate, to say the least. However, after the 1917 Revolution, Petipa’s ballets and his art were taken in a new direction that changed everything and did not keep his legacy intact. This presentation will look at the history of one of his most famous ballets - La Bayadère - and we will be looking at the history of how this ballet survived after Petipa’s death: in other words, what happened next?"
This presentation was filmed on 19th May 2024 and it is dedicated to the people of Ukraine, especially my friends.
*I should point out that I made two mistakes in the presentation: at 0:00:37, I meant to say 1876, not 1867, and at 0:24:03, I meant to say Solor, not Gamzatti lol
