False. These are 2 stage pumps that create more pressure and they have added a pressure relief valve so you can shut the nozzel off while running the pump. I built one for about $1200 including hose and nozzles and all.

Steve shaw I have a "Vermeer MX-125" 500 Gallon water tank system. When I needed to buy water hoses, couplers, butterfly valves, etc I had to goto a specialty distributor which sells fire-rated equipment. Bro, a 4" NPT Male Coupler alone costs $175 dollars. The water hoses were $1000.00 each and I got 4 of them @ 100Feet each hose. Watching you fight a fire with a $175 Home Depot pump is like watching a kid with a super soaker say "It sprays water just like a firetruck, Its literally the same thing"

I went through 2 fires in California. My dad build a very simple pvc system with a bunch of sprinklers that sat on the roof. We also used our pool water to soak the ground around our house. I feel the most important thing that saved our home both times was the fact that we tore the earth around our house for 100 feet in all directions to bare dirt.

Won't stop flying fireballs in a fire storm with 50 MPH winds like we had in Northern California in 2017. But you have to try and kudos to your Dad for trying. The 100 feet dirt barrier in all directions is pretty impressive. Just keep whatever grasses/weeds that will eventually grow through that dirt cut down to the nub. No fuel limits the fire.

The sign is there to keep the water rationing police off your back. The sign is a special permit to use water when water rationing laws are in effect. The water was already metered and paid for by the homeowner just for filling their pool.

I fought the Malibu Fire in Nov. 2018 and for 2 days not a single fire truck or helicopter was ever seen. The equipment is a good idea but setting it up and thinking someone else (fireman) is going to save your house for you while you drive off is not going to happen... It's your house you need to fight for it or it burns to the ground. There are not enough firefighters to go around what they need to start is rent a Fireman service :)

So fun fact: The fire service actually did start out as a private, for-hire service. Fire insurance would go around and sell people "fire insurance" and have the homeowner post a very similar to the sign seen in this video. If a fire happened, both fire and the insurance agent would show up to your house, and if you didn't have insurance, they will all just stand there in front of your house watching and enjoying the bonfire of your house burning to the ground. Well, as time went on and more affluent neighborhoods were able to afford fire insurance, and therefore firefighters but the more poorer parts of the city couldn't afford the arm & leg rates the insurance companies were charging, and people would lose their lives in fires as a result, that's when the government stepped in and decided to make the fire service a public service to protect life and limb, and the fire insurance could be for writing a claim of your house burning down, but your life (or anyone else's) won't be decided based on your financial ability and decision whether or not to pay the insurance guy.

Rip off. Buy a Honda GX200 motor and get some fire hose. I called up the local department and they gave me 200’ of old hose. It’s the exact same system. I did this and saved my house in the Quail Fire in Winters. The fire department dumped 7,000 gallons on the fire. Exact same system but I put it together for $599.

As a fire fighter, the system would be better used to AG sprinklers. With an extended 5 or 10 gal fuel tank and a no water cut off sensor, you could power agricultural grade 1" sprinklers to create a vapor barrier around your house. Effectively changing the humidity and temperature aroundy your property during a fire storm.. The watee curtain made by this system would significantly slow or stop a big fire.. The risk of direct flame impingement or embers would be almost non threatening if a professional system was installed

When I lived in Wyoming, we had a system like that to create a water curtain around the house and live stock pens, shed etc. We had a huge pond with a pump in a little pump house as well as two under grounds 10,000 gallon tanks. Never had to use it thankfully, but it was relatively inexpensive as we did all the work ourselves. The fire Marshall loved it though hahahah

Plus most fires burn homes from within by drapes and furniture as the windows and using radiant heat, over direct flame impingement

Those embers find little cracks and defects, enter the attic space, soffits, under-deck areas etc. and start the fire. Roofs, even metal roofs, are very vulnerable because the attic spaces are almost never properly sealed. Just one opening or gap 1/8"or bigger can cause the complete loss of a home. Only a very small minority of homes ignite due to direct flame impingement.

If that Oakland hills fire from 20 plus years ago came through that hose wouldn't stand a chance, that fire was burning concrete and steel poles it was so hot and windy, I was at the old putting green on 1900 Harrison st about 3-4 miles from the fire and 15 minutes before the fire started, remember the fire did not start yet and I'm not exaggerating what I'm about to say, as I putted suddenly a small tornado like whirlwind kicked up at snow park and it sucked my pants legs toward the hills where the fire started, and it was hot air like the Devil was in the air, and I froze and looked off to see if anyone else feel this hell in the air but I was by myself there, it froze me like I was in a Exorcist movie, no joke dude and 30 minutes later all hell broke out in the hills and firetrucks and firefighters were getting destroyed by that hellish devil fire, you had firemen throwing down hoses and running for their lives and jumping in swimming pools so they didn't get roasted alive, I seen the devil that day come travel through that park and head up to the Oakland hills.

I remember the Oakland Hills Fire Storm Sunday October 19th 1991 there has been a smaller brush fire on Saturday, there was a strange odor in the air Saturday in the Bay Area. I worked in downtown Berkeley the fire could be seen from the bleachers at Edwards Field at UC Berkeley in the Oakland Hills. I was monitoring the fire dept on my scanner and had a map. Once the fire jumped across the freeway, it was heading towards an historical hotel made of wood (they were able to stop it) however the owner of store called told everyone to get out! Had the fire reached the hotel, would have been a wall of flame heading towards downtown Berkeley.

Additional training for residents on how best to tackle the fire would also be an added benefit to this system. Not so that residents can replace fire firefighters but so that they can help protect themselves should the worst happen. We grew up on a farm with ponds and no hydrants and basically on our own if there was a fire. We had a dedicated well and pump for firefighting. We also had a Hale fire pump that floated on the pond that was about 2 1/2 acres. In case of a brush fire (lightning was the biggest risk) we'd launch the pump and it could run two 2 1/2" hoses at over 100 gpm each. It would work on a pool too with a single hose. You need to train on this so you know what you're getting into. Just like you never buy a gun for home protection without training on how to use it! Waiting until you need it with no training is likely a death sentence in both cases.

To everyone saying its a rip off and cheaper to buy, you're completely right. Here's the same argument but from the side of business and capitalism: Buying the pump and hoses makes logical sense to someone who's worked with a screw driver before. If you've got a home in Malibu, or elsewhere in California, I highly doubt you've used a screw driver. Not to mention you'll most likely have that kind of disposable income lying around. To them, its some 'fancy' tech (or at least something they know firefighter will be able to use) that they can keep in their garage. Don't even need it year round. Just for the dry season. For them, its piece of mind and a lot cheaper than the insurance bill on replacing their vacation home. If that's not enough to get some celebrity or millionaire to rent it, I'm sure the company could advertise they donate a portion of the money to local fire stations. If you're willing to pay for a pool guy to come every few weeks and take the leaves out and put chlorine in the water, a maid to dust your shelves and sweep your floor, a gardener to mow your lawn and trim your bushes, you'll be willing to pay about the same monthly cost as those guys to have that reassurance you did what you could to save your property.

I live in a wooded area in Ormond Florida, and I made this type system years ago. I have a 10000 gallon pool and a 40000 gallon pond on our property. We have enough fire hose to reach any part of our land. The fire house and nozzle can shoot water 70 to 100 feet away. It's a great system. Thank God we haven't had to use it yet. But we are prepared. Good luck over in California.

as an avid DIY'er , i made my own system for a fraction of the cost: get a 2.5 HP Honda water pump (gas powered). Go to a pipe supply place for 100 ft of firehouse, an official nozzle purchased on Ebay for 90$, a 50 ft length of that green tubing that goes into our pond, and a filter screwed onto the end to keep junk from clogging it up. All in all, spent about 500-600$ and it's mine permanently.

The comment section sure reveals a lot of misconceptions about what's involved in moving lots of water at lots of pressure. Trash pumps, sump pumps and pool pumps have the volume but not the pressure. Pressure washers have lots of pressure but little volume. It takes a good amount of horsepower to feed a fire hose properly. My fire pump is a 13 hp model, with a two-stage pump. It'll turn a 1 1/2" hose, with a proper nozzle, into something that's really tedious to hang on to. This thing will deliver 150 psi at perhaps 100 gallons a minute while doing this. Right now it's set up and ready to go, as I'm real close to the Bobcat fire. Though I have a fair bit invested in the system, I'm hoping I won't need to use it.

For $300 a month, not bad if you plan only renting it for a month. But in cali where fires are practically a bi-yearly occurrence, you're better off just building one for around $1500, $1k of that is just for the hose. You could probably split the cost with your neighbors so they can use both of your pools with 1 generator, and install fire access gates between your yard fences (so they can move between your pools easier). Hell, you could probably have a permanent installation between the yards built into both pools.

If you empty your pool here the ground water will push it out if the ground. Most pools hold 10000 gallons.

$3600/year for a fancy pump or save money and lower your insurance by thinning out the brush, trees, and vines. Also clean up the dead leaves, wood, and undergrowth and turn it into compost. It's a win/ win scenario. You in effect create a area around your house where the fires will slow down and you'll have some awesome fertilizer too.

Hummm... lets see... in May I bought a de-commissioned 1984 Mack 4 Guys- Heavy Pumper for $2,500.00 (I offered scrap price) That's just over 8 months rent . It comes with wheels too. It has a 60,000 GVW, a 2,000 gal. stainless steel tank, a 1,500 gal. per minute 2 stage pump, and 9... yes 9... 2-1/2" outlets. I collect water off of the roof into a settling tank and it overflows into the inspection cover in the top of the tank. It's a blast to mess around with while knowing that you and your property have a fighting chance until the professionals show up. Yes, fire departments will give you old & outdated hose but good luck with nozzles and fittings. I now keep my original 2" transfer pump, that looks unusually similar to the rent-a-pump, in one of the side compartments on that Engine. FYI keep the pressure below 130psi when the wife is "training". Ha Ha Ha !
