Using Water Effectively in the Wildland/Urban Interface
FWC-625-04-V
This training video for fire departments shows various approaches to using water wisely for reducing interface structure loss. Using Water Effectively in the Wildland/Urban Interface can help change the way fire departments address the risk to interface residences and structures, through Firewise preparation and mitigation before a wildfire threatens a community. The video is incredibly valuable and informative to show different ways of using water effectively in interface firefighting and provides examples of techniques or strategies including planning and locating water sources, accessing those water sources for supply; and testing and maintaining the source. Some of the tactics shown include: developing quick engine fill sites, making the best use of limited water, proper use of foams and gels, mobile water delivery using various extinguishing options, and site preparation to reduce water needs.

Very good info. Hopefully, we will work these videos into our training. Bad thing about it is that there are more folks on this hand crew than we can muster on initial attack during the day. Good video, with lots of info.

Makes one appreciate having hydrants in the majority of our area. Once got yelled at by an old member after a fire for cranking up the 1" nozzle from 35gpm to 75... that I was wasting water. My response was that the engine was parked next to a hydrant and that I would have turned the deck gun on it if it had been in range or called a tower ladder if it had been bigger and closer, just make it rain out of twin 700gpm ladder pipes...

If you do not have your house prepared, prepare to have it damaged in the name of possibly saving other houses. Cutting down trees and ripping down gutters is exactly that. You may find your pool got pumped or dipped out as well. Leave a hose and tools out as well and maybe have all your sprinklers out.

Here in Australia we are back in full swing fire season as usual every summer we live in a rural area and have to have a 70 meter clear zone around houses and one meter of no vegetation at all (gravel, concrete or some other non flammable material) we have fixed wing planes and helicopters that are waterbommers along with ground crews the fire that has been burning nearby for 3 weeks has burned 30,000 hectares and destroyed quite a few buildings and sadly one person has died you guys should watch some of our firefighters in action in an Australian bushfires

Seriously, does not seem like firemen's job is simple home cleanup. We should keep our homes fuel-free.

When I evacuated there was not a leaf on the ground. When I returned there were 6 inches of leaves next to my deck. Non-local homeowners do a great cleanup once in the spring. There will always be plenty for the firefighters to do. But we are working to Firewise level of safety.

I wouldn't say that fire departments fail to have the proper adapters "over and over" with neighboring departments. Even from structural to wildland oriented units its not that regular an issue unless some people are really asleep at the wheel. There aren't that many choices and if its a place you regularly go, many excuses for not having the right adapters; and if its going in an area where you operate rarely or never before but they have different threads than nearby areas they should be aware and have adapters they can provide. Even in that rare case there's still someone between you and them that deals with the issue more frequently and can help. There's at most 5 or 6 coupling types and of those the majority is between NYC, NST and NPT unless you want to throw stortz in which is even easier to adapt, or commercial suction hose with the two cams which shouldn't be an issue since its mostly for suction and therefore doesn't have to match anything else but the pump thats drafting. Feelmlike the over and over makes many seem very inept

The most important things for any fire fighter to think of is, knowing where every drop of water is going and how much is needed to get the job done. How much is needed and what is the Best way to apply it. Which way is the wind blowing while you are applying the water. The moto of Every FFer and department should be, "Stop the Threat as Fast and Safely as possible while using the Least amount of water." That makes you have to Think before you act.

I'm a Wildland Firefighter. I would disengage an pull back. And reassess the fire. I would probably call in some air attack. All the assessment of the houses will burn in the fire.

Sorry but then you going to take the back to fire house .bs use it fast and refill fast soak the trees ground and then save your live the more water you put on the ground is better . Cut the trees back 20ft from all roads. On both sides . Clear all . Other thing is fight from rods not in the mounts that's stupid that waste if all can fight from roads clear on both side better chance .to many peaple send others to do cap that don't do any good. Need better ways of doing it . Well that's off my chest don't mean to make peope mad but if I'm wrong tell me sorry.
