This is, in my opinion, the most fabulous, the most touching, the most truely felt convincing version of this aria, inspite the poor quality of the recording... Divine ! There is so much emotion in his voice, in his body language - he really IS this Alvaro! it goes right into my heart and soul... BRAVISSIMO Maestro and Thank you ! Can listen to it again and again...❤❤
WONDERFUL , one of my favourite arias , SUPERB light & shade in voice quality BRAVO BRAVO ! THANK YOU .

Even though this was extremely "shaky" the absolute brilliance of Mr. Kaufmann's performance shined through! Thank you for posting.

wow, that was some pretty superb technique at the end there! In general he has a great sense of musical line, great breath control always, but in some instances especially so. And he never falters on any note, sings through every required high note, every trill, every turn with utter care, secure in everything. Most importantly, he shows care for every note, every phrase, caresses it. A great artist with a ray of genius on him, despite any shortcomings, which they absolutely ALL have and always had.

Well done, especially at 05:24, when his voice slowly gets higher and higher at the word "pietà". Like a smooth transition.

PLEASE ! Listen again... "Every note he sings is perfect" Hm.... He sings out of tune more than once and also a wrong word, (destin, not penar...) Great singer, but NOT PERFECT ! I heard him "live" in Iceland, and he sounded better in the radio recording, than live..... I LIKE HIM, (but perfect,NO )

NOBODY is perfect - but JK LIVES his roles, his characters and no other version is more convincing.. music is not mathematics, you have to feel it... By the way: it is PENAR , not destin !!!

If everybody sings like Bergonzi, Corelli, Del Monaco or Pavarotti - all dead people - it will be truly boring! I am happy with JK's ringing voice. He is the most charismatic, interesting and attractive singer (next t Domingo 20 years ago)

I am glad somebody still thinks passionately about an opera singer. I am sorry to say that the fact that somebody has a success in La Scala doesn't mean he is perfect. Live is not the same as recordings, when one has time to listen to it without the direct impact of the voice. Kaufman is a very good singer but what I hear in this recording is musically bothersome to me.

the weird thing about this singer is is that if i'm listening to him and think well ok, it's good, but not perfect, and then i go to listen to the same thing sung by someone else, sometimes several of the other 'greats' that some suggest, i am invariably disappointed, and then i appreciate Kaufmann even more. Why? I don't know. Maybe it's because others have some things he lacks, but then they lack some things he has, or maybe better put - they have some extra 'baggage' in their voices, various annoying 'embellishments' that he does not have, and so it's a more subtle experience to listen to him, more musical. The music comes through, not sound affects. For example Correlli has this nasal-glottal thing that keeps popping up here and there. It's just this sort of grating extra layer on the voice that just makes it too exposed and in-you-face, not subtle. Kaufmann's sound is very together, rounded and complete, yet rich as well, but kept within the boundaries of beauty. It never has that annoying in-you-face edge on it. Yes, sometimes he's a bit dull on a note here or there, but this is almost always alternated with other high notes that are simply mesmerizing in their tonal quality, both soft and loud, showing that he is always in control, never riding on chance. Sometimes when i know a really high note is coming up, i think no way he's going to pull that off, but he always does! And i'm like wow, that high note was just way better than the less high note right before it. People say falsetto. Nope. He is never falsetto, at least i haven't heard it. That note will always sound just like all the others in quality, just as supported, if not better. So i don't know what it is, but there's definitely something very solid about his technique, even if it's not to everyone's liking. To me it's unique, and in a very good way. It enables him to produce music, not sound effects. Vast majority of tenors get too nasal, and once a tenor gets nasal, that's it, you can listen about 2 minutes, and then you're done. It gets so unbearably boring. Kaufmann is never nasal, he doesn't have that awful closed-nose tenor sound. He covers, yes, but then suddenly opens, and it's obviously a choice, perhaps an artistic one, or perhaps at times a way of caring for the voice. Some day he might open up like nobody's ever expected, just wait, and it's happened already on many occasions.

ArtShouldBeBeautiful You talk the biggest load of shite I have ever heard on the subject of Kaufmann's 'singing' technique. How much did you get paid?

ArtShouldBeBeautiful ^ "shite." Haters gonna hate. He's 50 years old and hasn't had problems. Sure he took off a few months this year, but only to come back and triumph as otello. His pacing, his power, his intellect, his drama, his instincts- you've got to be pretty fucking obtuse to hate on this guy. I've seen him live many times- to compare recordings of any voice isn't really relevant. Read the writings of those who've witnessed these voices live, or see them live yourself before making a judgement. You don't have to like him- but to hate on him and discredit the 20-year international career he's had so far in top form the whole time singing the most difficult rep written for a tenor... wise up, people. He's made history.

+ArtShouldBeBeautiful, your comments reflect my thoughts more acurately than anything I have ever read about the technique of Jonas Kauffman. Techincally speaking, I believe thw way he is able to always be in control is by approaching every note, regardless of weather high, low, open, or covered, from the same place, where he utilizes the thin edge function of the vocal cord and then keeps it as his foundation for any musical technique he would like to express on top of it. When you are able to live in this place you are not bound by just one style of singing, but are free to express the character at will and ALWAYS be in control.
@pitrescatorce166 жыл бұрын
You are right. And lucky to have heard him live. I hope some day I will, I am saving to travel to Mu.nich. We should be grateful to have the chance to hear one of the greatest tenors in history. We missed Carusso and Del Monaco,but we have enjoyed Domingo and, most of all, Kaufmann.

Mr. Kaufman.- not to sound boring is not to sound affected. Sing with musical taste please!
