These La Gard safe locks are really cool 👍😃 I’m no safe expert, but I had a lot of fun making a tool to pick this and learning the technique 😃

Very interesting, and nicely-picked, Ash. Thanks. That's a pretty good lock, in some ways, when you think about it: If the lock was embedded anything up to about 6 inches inside a safe door, with steel and fireproof cladding, and access was via a hole which is only a millimetre or two bigger in diameter than the key, then that would improve security drastically. You would have no feedback through your other hand, but only through the safe body. Angling the pick would also be very restricted, so you would not be able to make the disks bind slightly, thus making a stethoscope or good microphone essential. And of course, you would very likely have to pick that lock after defeating the primary lock, which could well have a timeout feature.

I used to make and sell picks for these locks back in the 90's. The similarities between these locks and combination locks is not accidental. Back in the mid 1800's, prior to combination locks being perfected, there were a couple U.S. keylocks which were very similar to the modern LaGard. In fact they contributed to the development of the comb lock. The key becomes the spindle. My pick into a tube that fit up into the nose of the lock and had a spacing tube, making control a bit easier.

Very inventive on the pick my friend. Those locks are usually found on TL-30 safes as seconday locks to the combination. Couple tips: When you first run through the wheel pack (not discs) try to place each wheel in a gate dont matter if its a false gate. This will make the first wheel your picking more "Distinct". Or else the other wheels can mask the wheel your picking. Secondly only half the wheel or 180 degrees of the wheel is being used. The other half is non important. Third those "tabs" that the key turns wear out causing lockouts over time. Not really a good lock for any heavy use. Again nice job buddy!

Nice work, Ash! Great explanation, etc. I don't know how I missed this video 2 years ago. My La Gard 2270 arrives soon. Also ordered a change key(resembles an L-shaped Allen wrench, a set-up key(essentially a "zero-bitted" 2270 key), and another key with a different bitting to demonstrate the key change function. I might even order another key to turn that one into a pick and make a picking video. I'm also going all the way back to your very first video and make sure I've seen every single one of them at least once. (I try to remember to click "LIKE" on each video I've viewed to show my support and to help keep track of the videos I've seen.)

I worked with a similar type lock, that had a rekeying function. you unlocked it using the original key, pressed a pin through on the inside, took the old key out, and put the new key in, then removed the pin, and it would be set for the new key. a very quick and simple process. fyi: this lock was on a cash dispenser at a large retail chain, and I've seen similar safes at quite a few other chain stores.

Very interesting cross between a standard combination safe lock and a disc detainer lock. The picking is also a mix of both :) It seems you can modify an ejector rod to work as a pick too, as long as you make a plug or something to keep it centered in the hole. Very nice refreshing topic and a clear demo again Ash👍

Nice picking! Can't imagine how difficult it's going to get with the lock behind several inches of steel, concrete and whatever else once it's in the safe door.

I imagine picking this lock would be much harder if there were no "notches" on the discs. Also I think it would be much harder to pick this actually mounted as intended, considering the length of the key? Burried behind 20? cm of steel & concrete there might not be much to hear, so you can only feel it. Interesting lock & selfmade pick :)
@LockNoob4 жыл бұрын
In a real life setting, you use an amped mic - the pick is essentially the same but in 2 parts

Great example of understanding how the inners work. To understand anything you have to have the ability to know visually in your mind. Or it at least helps a ton. Did your armed forces try like mad to recruit you?

Totally worth cutting your finger off to get the lock open 🤣. Did you goggle or KZbin to find a picture/video of a pick for that type of lock? It is great following you through the process to make a pick and pick it. One last thing, if the manufacturer put a felt pad on the arm that engages in the disks to open the lock, would it hinder you in picking it? Hence not much scraping sound to work ot the gates.
@LockNoob4 жыл бұрын
A safe smith showed me a pick for it and talked to me about the technique. I thought the pick could be made out of the key, but it's not very robust
@gkeyman5654 жыл бұрын
I don't think you need to disassemble the disks to change keys, that long slot in the disk is the release, just like in a combo lock, you turn the change-key that goes in a hole on the cover, I will re-check the vid. yes there is a hole in the cover. Probably in the locked position, turn change-key then insert and turn new key, turn back change -key, done., after reading comment below, a correct diameter pin would also work for this type. Nice pick and gut, and pick making, have a great day
@LockNoob4 жыл бұрын
Sorry if I didn't explain properly; no, you don't disassemble, you use a change key to separate the outer from inner and re-key
