Bought my first real board fromCarl Ekstrom down in the Shores in '65, right before we moved from up on Soledad (just below Dr. Seuss's estate) to Bird Rock. La Jolla was a "village" then--Torrey Pines Dr. was a two-lane path, plenty of open lots and space. Crazy partying, Green Dragon Colony buds, great waves, crazier people (too many gone now.) Love this vid.

My dad was Thomas Hinds (Aka Tom or Tommy). His brother's name was Don. I grew up listening to the legends of Windansea and Mission Beach surfing. My favorite was always hearing about how they would ride down the storm drains. Lol and behold, I spot those very drains in this vid at @2:49. Never heard about the term "surf nazi" or any nazi flags though so I don't think they were a part of that crowd. I searched KZbin to see if I could spot them in any of these clips, but I'm not skilled at picking out my dad when he was this young! Lol He had me at 41. They were in that documentary The Endless summer though.

The guitar player in the striped tee shirt at 5:35 was Robbin Crosby, later of RATT.

My neighbor is over and we're watching this video. He bought Red Mountain Inn and ran that bar. He knows all these guys. Running the car car off the bluff. Sandy Woods, Solid Gold Soul. The Convention poster John Sarret. Shirley Sarret did his grandmas hair. Albert the Gorilla. Candy Durham taking a puff. Butch, Jack MacPherson, Robert Rakestraw. We bought a hat for him from Doug at Branding Iron.

Bunny Kitselman. The truth is that the Pumphouse gang and MacMeda were 2 different groups, different ages and different spots on the beach at Winda sea. The parking lot and the pumphouse.

Happily, most of them did make it through the 60s and 70s. The only ones who come to mind that did not were Butch Van Artsdalen, Mark Poitras, PG Bent and Pete Sachsie.

You left out many names. Long list of deaths is on their website. Some were murdered. Others went by way of suicide. Maynard's bar owner died while fleeing the cops. Others overdosed on drugs like laughing gas.

60’s and 70’s in San Diego would almost make a Short one worth the candle. Glad I’m still here to enjoy it.
