I've got a couple of those palms at my home in Fallbrook. The spines on the base of the fronds are lethal! I haven't tried it but I'd bet they could go through thin sheet metal LOL! When I have to trim the palms I handle the fronds the same way - separate the lower section and handle it very carefully and still get stuck LOL! Fun history - thanks for sharing!

So young that on those summer days in the shore break peak, i could not figure how they drilled the holes for the shack.

I knew Black Mac and still know his daughter, much respect to the builders of the Shack.

David and Donny were two of my dads best friends with I was little. I loved both those guys. Donny was so nice and took me out with him a few times. I loved hanging out at his house too.

My old neighbour from Mira Mesa, (the late) Jerry Shine was part of that crew, and was one of the "surf nazis" that rode the drain pipe down to the beach.

Hey now! I was at that concert as a 15-year-old kid, totally awe-struck at the line-up of some of my favorite bands. KPRI, the late-night "underground" radio station was playing a lot of music from these groups and promoting the shows put on by Trans-Love Airways at The Hippodrome. I recognize about half of the musicians here. I'm not sure if that's John Cippolina at about the 1:33 mark. But Buddy Miles (and members of his Express), Sons of Champlin (Terry Haggerty on guitar), Taj Mahal (Jesse Ed Davis), and Mother Earth are some that I recognize. Unfortunately there is no sound with this footage, and the song chosen to accompany the visuals seems inapt. I enjoyed this video most after I muted the sound. But I'm grateful to see this after 56 years. It helps refresh some old memories.

Bought my first real board fromCarl Ekstrom down in the Shores in '65, right before we moved from up on Soledad (just below Dr. Seuss's estate) to Bird Rock. La Jolla was a "village" then--Torrey Pines Dr. was a two-lane path, plenty of open lots and space. Crazy partying, Green Dragon Colony buds, great waves, crazier people (too many gone now.) Love this vid.

What a sweet compilation of such a wonderful group of kids who lived in the some of the most tremendous times in Human History. It only seemed like yesterday. How fast Tempus has really fugited! All the Depression Kids are fading away from our history and memory so fast now. How innocent life still was back then. Only in America. And I thought the 70s and 80s were the best times to be young in La Jolla! Too bad the USN Gunnery Point center is not there any more. 5,000,000 shells shot off to train our Sailors for their future harrowing experiences off of Okinawa and elsewhere trying to fend off fanatical Kamikazes from killing thousands of fellow sailors. Crowds had more fun at Windansea. The stupid town officials ended the Luaus before we could enjoy them. Windansea had MORE sand back then too. John Pernicano was serving up the first pizzas to San Diegans at his Brother's place. The old fine homes and yards. No ugly modern McMansions and ghostown neighborhoods. The Whaling Bar, Jamar's, Jack in the Box in Bird Rock, John's Waffle Shop at the Arcade. Share your memories before you forget them.
