I have watched a few of these games you have already posted. I was 19 years old when this game aired in 1988. I am 54 going on 55 in 2024. I am so emotional right now as I watch and listen to it. I am choked up and crying as do so. I didn’t know that I would have such a strong emotional reaction to watching an old Laker game. I miss my Showtime era Lakers and the absolute joy 🥹 I experienced watching them. This old broadcast from almost 36 years ago also reminds me of how much the world has changed since then and of those I loved way more than the Lakers, 🥰 back then, that are now passed on.😢 Thank you so much for taking the time to post and share this broadcast.😊

Yes, with the legend Chick Hearn. Have you ever watched the movie, from 1974, "The Gambler" starring James Caan. Great movie and has a classic scene involving these 2 teams.

I'm one year older than you. It was a different world back then. Then you would remember when people brought their headphones to the Forum and listened to Chick Hearn while they watched the game live. I miss it to but give thanks to the Lord that I lived to watch and see the Lakers of the 80's. Can you imagine what today's viewers are missing versus what we saw back then?! So many memories! games watched at the Fabulous Forum live! These are memories that we will take with us to the grave.

Época boa essa em que se ia à quadra de terno e gravata. Além do excelente basquete jogado dessa época, eu sinto falta desse jeito de se vestir. A NBA de hoje mais parece um carnaval do que um jogo de basquete.

Being an L.A. native, I love when someone posts these old Laker games with Chick at the announcing helm. Such a different time for sports broadcasting! Kudos to you and hoping you'll post a couple of rare Nuggets games from the 80s.

@@elturko1128Real broadcasting at the time. Stu HAD to analyze the game at the time, as Chick didn’t need another “that’s right” guy. Nowadays, Stu & that broadcaster the Lakers have sound like a bunch of WWF announcers. That current guy overhollers even when nothing is happening and Stu with his “he’ll try his hand at the charity stripe” phrase is old and done. Yep, Stu has to put in the work here. Now, he has put his analytics into cruise control.

Pure nostalgia for this 50-something that grew up in Seattle! Derrick McKey - My 2nd favorite player ever! Doing lots of Derrick McKey things in this game. Xavier McDaniel - Never realized what a gunner he was! Olden "Hands of Stone" Polynice - The man Seattle traded Scottie Pippen for. Oy. Russ Schoene - The Tom Chambers lookalike. This would be the first season after Chambers left for Phoenix. Too bad Nate is out this game, he was a great player to watch too. Dale Ellis, Michael Cage, Alton Lister, all those other guys...lots of memories there.

My god. How run the ball, what a magnificent defence, excellent shooters, outstanding players under the basket. What an exciting match: how different from the current (and boring) NBA limited to the circus slam dunks and unlimited 3 shots with no sense.

I found the halftime interview with James Worthy to be interesting. He talks about the changes in the game, nba, and as a whole. Players are coming in bigger, stronger, faster. Nutrition and workout habits. And to think, this was back during the 80s.

I don't understand why anyone likes this type of basketball. There's no constant bitching to refs after every call, no one does the Schwarzenegger pose after a dunk or shoots an arrow after making a three. And don't get me started on the refs calling walks and carrying all the time. It gets annoying after awhile.

This team was too good, I just wish they could have finished the season healthy...it's like they kept getting better; I wish Cooper never left, obviously Kareem had to retire but they had to get better back-up point guards for Magic as time went on into the 1990-91 season.
@TiltBrook
@TiltBrook 11 ай бұрын
I agree! We should’ve FOR SURE won in 89! This team was quite possibly even better than the 87 team?! However, as much of a letdown as that was, if I had to choose, I would take the 1991 season for a championship more than any others that we lost. That would’ve completely book ended Showtime, and it would’ve given Magic one more title than MJ… It would also completely shift the entire debate as to who was better between the two.

@@TiltBrook Yeah, I'm a Pistons fan and I heard stories about Riley working the guys extra hard because they finished their playoff run in the West early so that's how Scott was hurt, too much on his legs; Magic got hurt in game 2 and tried to play in game 3 for a big but couldn't maintain....Same thing with Thomas in 1991 with the wrist surgery in '91; Dumars had the toe/groin; Salley, Aguirre, and Edwards had back problems and Detroit still made it to the ECFinals that year...I wish both were healthy going for 3 because that would have made things more clear. 1991 Lakers: Yeah, I wanted them to beat the Bulls because I hated that team in Chicago, respected Jordan but nobody else....You know Chicago had a 117-76 foul shooting attempt advantage over Detroit in '91 from games 1-3? So even had both teams shot 100%, no way Detroit could have won.... As far as the Lakers are concerned, I hated how they gave Chicago that series because Mike Dunleavy didn't play the rotation correctly although Worthy was injured; Magic could have just played small forward and they didn't go inside enough -- you base everything on Magic concerning getting into the offense, scoring, and distributing, it slows down the Lakers' offense.... See this is where Michael Cooper was missed because you needed another ball handler who could defend to take the pressure off Magic, no doubt if Kareem/Cooper were there or even just Riley with Cooper the Lakers would have won that series vs. Chicago 4-2 or something.... I'm still looking for Byron Scott?...It's like he had nothing but intimidation left and every time he shot the ball or attempted to do something he couldn't play...someone probably got to him but where was Terry Teagle?...This is why I blamed the coach and then no Michael Thompson getting major minutes when you have a front court of Divac, Perkins, Green, and Thompson with Elden Campbell as a rookie? There's no way Chicago should have had any advantage in the front court at all in that series, which is why I blamed the coach....I mean it's 1-1 and they lose game 3 and Dunleavy says they are in a ditch? Are you crazy? Just bounce back and win at home and you are up 3-2 -- he just gave up.
@plainsimple244
@plainsimple244 10 ай бұрын
@ChrisN1344 The Lakers had so many chances to win so many more titles ... the 4 titles Magic lost in the 80's he could have won in '84, '89 if healthy, '91 if Worthy was healthy and they had Riley along with Cooper...IF the Lakers in 1991 had the same team in 1990 they would have easily defeated the Bulls like 4-2... and you mentioned '83, so all those titles the Lakers could have won...I still don't believe '91 was real on so many levels, that was merely Detroit (Isiah) and then Magic opening up the doors for Jordan to be one of the crowd or accepted and taking the league forward.

StuporChronics had a horrible team without Tom Chambers. I read back then, they had three dudes who averaged 20+ a game, with Chambers, X-man, and Ellis. Reminds me of their later years with Schrempf , Kemp, and Payton a little. Chambers could dunk with both hands-fun guy to watch in HS as well !

As an avid Boston Celtics fan, I have always detested the Lakers with a burning passion. However, I fully admit that Chick Hearn is the greatest announcer in the history of sports. SO much better than the Celtic's longtime announcer, Johnny Most, who I never liked at all. Mike Gorman was much better than Johnny Most, but, Hearn is simply the best.
