That is not a villain, creature, or monster, as we say in Hollywood movies. It is the god of the forest. Therefore, Ashitaka tries to stop Tatarigami with the utmost respect. This scene shows the depth of the ancient Shinto religion in Japan and the respect for the predecessors who have facilitated it.
0:22 a small but underrated detail: Ashitaka's sister is just as brave as he is. When her friend falls, she doesn't hesitate to draw her weapon and face the creature to protect her. Damn.

ok, to clarify... in the English version, Kaya IS Ashitaka's sister, and that's 100% clear and explicitly stated in their dialogue... however, in the original Japanese, she wants to marry him, and gives him the crystal dagger to signify this (which follows the tradition of their village), but the fact that she only gives it to him as he's leaving means there was no official relationship between then until that point (which makes sense since she's still quite young), but later on, when Ashitak gives that dagger to San, Ashitaka essentially cuts the tie with Kaya in favor of San, which is why they changed Kaya into Ashitaka's sister in the English version (since they felt it tainted Ashitaka's character)

@@sleepyskorpion Where did you get the idea that Kaya's giving of the crystal dagger means she wants to marry him? She very well could and it's fine by me if she does, but you're stating it like it's a known fact.

@@Bendesho Apparently in Emishi culture, it was custom for the bride to give her husband a dagger as a gift on the day of their wedding ceremony. Kaya was Ashitaka's betrothed, and when he left she broke Emishi tradition to say goodbye and give him the dagger so he wouldn't forget her- though she knows that he's now "dead" and they can't be married. You can find this information with a google search- there are a couple of articles that mention this scene and Kaya's character in relation to Ashitaka's.

@@sleepyskorpion No, she is his promised woman to marry. Ani means brother in ordinary Japnese but not in this case.
The first time I watched this when I was 5, I truly got terrified of the monster especially the rotting part, but now I rewatched it, this movie was a masterpiece
The tendrils upon tendrils look, you know would be done in CGI today. But the fact that there was at least one dude who had to hand animate that back then is truly mind-blowing.
Easily one of the most disturbing fantasy creatures every created. Easily. And the soundtrack at 0:57, perfect audio representation of shivers down the spine.

This movie is so good. One of my favorites from Ghibli.
0:10 Animators are absolute geniuses, they give unrealistic speed and movement to the beast on purpose so it feels super uncanney, it makes us feel uncomfortable and it really gives that demonic feel, masterpiece.
@tlotpwist3417 Жыл бұрын
Just remembered the behind the scenes techniques used to animate Ohmus in Nausicaa, with the same result of making the creatures stand out of the rest of the world (it was litterally segments of drawings tied to be moved in that wormy crawling fashion) Most of today's CG animation cant hold a candle to the creativity of traditional animators
Something I noticed on my last rewatch of this is that Nago here has no hair/fur while when we see him in a scene later in the movie, he clearly has hair. So either all of it fell out or singed away from his demon transformation, or all of his hair got burned off before Lady Eboshi shot him
Same I would buy a bow and arrow from Walmart and shoot my grandma with it

Breath of the Wild strongly influenced by films like this one. Majority of influence of Zelda stem from fairy tales, middle age Europe, and Lord of the Rings

it's so scary how the demon just stops chasing ashitaka, it's main target, to go after some random girls who are staring at it from a distance. just unnerving.
‘This movie will be fun’ mom said. ‘It is a beautiful animation film that teaches us to protect the environment‘ mom said. That was what happened to me when I was in first year of my elementary school.

"Also a lovecraftian abomination attacks some villagers and someone gets decapitated with an arrow", she later added.
This scene has inspired the legend of Zelda: Tears of the kingdom.

I just finished reading HP Lovecraft's 'The Dunwich Horror'. There were descriptions in the story of the summoned abomination that seemed very familiar... this was the scene it reminded me of!
