This week on Under10Hours, we dive back into the San Francisco Rush series to its final entry, LA Rush. The game was an attempt to reboot the series and put Midway back in the spotlight, but how actually is it?
Let's get into it!

One phrase. Cheat Codes. Activate insane traffic and try to get from one end of the city to another while traffic is driving 500 mph is hysterical fun.

I like racing games with a lot of traffic, it make for a lot of chaos, but the money thing was really disappointing. Thankfully there is a simple trick in the console versions (Xbox/PS2): Go to your garage, choose one of the shadow locked cars you want (you still can see his silhouette, so more or less you know which car is which), now unplug your controller and re-plug it, get out of the garage and BAM! the car you was using magically has become the one you looking in the garage.

This isn’t the only failed attempt at a reboot that Midway released in 2005; there was also a reboot of the arcade game NARC, which came in the form of an open-world, action-adventure title developed by VIS Entertainment of State of Emergency fame. At the very least, Midway’s reboot of Area 51, also released in 2005, was moderately successful and received a loosely related sequel titled Blacksite: Area 51 in 2007.

That's so true. They tried to play on nostalgia and they fell on their face so hard. I miss Midway, but they were far from their peak at this point.

I just finished this game yesterday after playing it for 4 days, and it was a test to my will and sanity. I've been on a spree of playing racing games this year, most of them being older. Most of what I have gone through are games I played for the first time when I was a kid, some that I didn't finish back then and I am trying to finish them now. I've finished 27 games so far. L.A. Rush was one of those games that I played as kid, but I actually barely remember playing it back then (I wonder why). Never knew it was part of a series of other games until now. This was the first game in that series of 27 that I seriously considered not finishing. It seems like the developers went out of their way to make the most annoying and painful design choices so that players would not enjoy the game. Like I said, I played a lot of games recently, a lot of them being slightly older or from the same time period LA Rush was released, and none of them made me consider bashing my head against the wall and breaking things like this one. Some examples: Midnight Club II (2003) and III (2005), Need For Speed Underground 1 (2003) and 2 (2004), Juiced 1 (2005) and 2 (2007), Test Drive Unlimited 1 (2006), LA Street Racing (2006), Street Racing Syndicate (2004), and the list goes on. Midnight Club II was the most difficult game out of this list, one of the most difficult games I ever played, one that I never finished as a kid, but it still felt like a good challenge and it was a lot of fun. In comparison, LA Rush felt like a poorly made dollar store Midnight Club copy that is cursed. I still don't know who Lydell is, what he does, why he bothers so much with Trikz and why his girl is still with him, and I honestly could not care less at this point. What a mess of "history". It can't be bothered to give you barely enough of a reason to care of even to know the characters. The game didn't even had ending credits after the final cutscene, didn't even gave that feeling of "it's done". But the actual gameplay is where the terror lives. Don't know who thought it was a good idea to do a Midnight Club style open world checkpoint race but only showing one single checkpoint at the time. The minimap is almost useless, and you can't open the large map while racing, not even to see where your opponents are. The number of times I was hitting the nitro in a straight road just to pass a checkpoint and see that I missed the 45 degree turn to the next one on the street that is now a quarter mile behind me is infuriating. To make things spicier, the braking in most cars is absolutely garbage and the e-brake is of no use either. You hit the braking pedal with all force and it seems like your character just gently touches the pedal instead of flooring it. I never heard tires screeching and cars braking to a halt in this game, which is ironic considering that your car will even slant sideways from acceleration and burning tires. The handling in general is bad and feels inconsistent, seems like the steering wheel is doused with soapy water and you can never get the cars to be exactly where you want; this coupled with the manic traffic that seems to never give you enough space is a nightmare. I played the pc version where thank god you can actually skip the crashes, but still hitting traffic sometimes 10 times a race is extremely annoying, specially if you have the traffic turned higher than low or if you are crazy enough to play with it on maximum. Sometimes the game will force you on a highway tunnel on the wrong way against the traffic and there will be vehicles facing you at all lanes and in all possible spaces, and your only option is to crash, sometimes multiple times. Your opponents seem to only be affected by these kinds of obstacles if they are near your. Then comes the cherry on top of the pile of manure for me: extreme rubberbanding. I also played this year NFS Most Wanted (2005), Carbon, Pro Street and one the most annoying games ever made when it comes to rubberbanding: NFS Undercover. None of them were as annoying as LA Rush in this aspect. You can be hitting all the nitros, avoiding all crashes and following the race path perfectly and still your opponents will catch you no matter what, even if you saw them crash half a dozen of times near you. You, in the other hand, can never do the same. If you crash a couple of times or miss your way on the race letting your opponents get a good lead on you, you will never see them again. It's impossible to catch up. Not having a retry button anywhere in this game and having to always pay to race again make things the more infuriating. Also about rubberbanding, even the cops will catch up you no matter what, unless you are in a car that can easily do more than 150 (and keep in mind you can only get cars this fast near the end of the game). Yes, you can be in a tuned up nissan skyline doing 145 and the cops will still catch up to you instantly and outrun you with their crown vics or chevy caprices that must be modded out to hell. All of this for nothing, cops never arrest you, don't end races, don't impound your car. After wrecking a dozen of their cars and possibly killing and injuring double of that in people, the most they will do is fine you. This game is so consistently inconsistent that it may as well be a stress simulator with a built in crash system. Some fences are easily destructible, some are made of titanium, and you have no way of knowing which is which until you hit them, and end up losing a couple of races crashing because of it. Some posts and trees are made of cardboard, others are indestructible and others will trigger a crash animation when you hit them, and you also have no way to know until you hit them a couple of times. Sometimes you can climb a sidewalk or a concrete flower bed like it's nothing, sometimes they will lauch you up the air doing barrel rolls like your car is a leaf in the wind. And just to make things easier, a lot of the areas in this game are done up in similar colors and patterns, so you can't distinguish one thing from the other. Sometimes you will hit a wall thinking it is a ramp, sometimes a thing that looks like a pile of garbage or dirt is actually a ramp. The 10 minute endurance race going all the way through the city was torturing, thank god you don't have to finish in first. The final race agains Lydell and his men took me something like 8 tries and presumably 120 thousand dollars or more and grinding through easier races to have enough money. I found enough masochism in me to actually get this game to 100%, finishing all the stunt tokens (that are thankfully easier and less stressful) and unlocking and tuning all cars. Tuning in this game is a joke btw, why have West Coast Customs, even the guys from Pimp My Ride appearing in the cutscenes of your game if you can't even choose the color of your car? To add insult to injury, you can see opponents with the same cars as yours with different colors, but you have no way of changing a thing. To make things even worse, tuning is mostly cosmetic, as you will barely notice a difference in the way the car handles and feels after tuning. Talk about wasted potential and a big ass wasted opportunity to at least make the game interesting and worth playing in one way. 3 out of 10, only play this game if you have childhood nostalgia or a lot of time to waste and you want to break things (possibly including your mental health).

I loved this game, especially after visiting LA. I thought the traffic made things intense and I loved using strategy to avoid crashes. I thought the racing was a little easy and that the cops were not very good, much like the original Driver San Francisco, but it was fun to explore all the landmarks, even going through Compton, Mulholland Drive or seeing the the Queen Mary ocean liner in Long Beach.

When I was a kid, I actually had this game at the same time I had San Francisco Rush and Rush 2, but I never realized they were of the same series. Not for a second I thought about it, the idea never even came to mind. They're so different, I never even realized they had the same name, until I grew up. Revisited this game a few years ago and I hated it, but well, it was fun to freeroam when I was young, and the car damage is actually not bad! Surprising they could put it in a game with licensed vehicles. Another good video! :)

9:21 This is something I noticed getting right back into L.A. Rush. On the PC version, you have to deliver your car to the safehouse in the district the vehicle was located in. 12:49 Funny enough, on the PC version you can actually skip the crashes. Though, you can speed up the crashes on the console versions. Overall I enjoyed the video. I still love this game to this day, but I do get the frustration this game can give.
@Under10Hours

That's so funny because I looked up the acquire missions and saw that a few did bring you to different safe houses. But it never let me bring them to different places! And I mashed every button and could never skip any of the crashes, and to be absolutely positive I wasn't missing something, I looked at other reviews. No skipping. It's nuts!

I remember playing this on the PS2 and I never did get too far in the story mode of the game, I mostly free roamed and like exploring the decent sized map and crashing into stuff, as well as the amount of destruction you could do. Probably why I liked it because I didn't deal with the frustration of the races and other missions lol. Also yes i thought i remember being able to speed through the wrecks so you wouldn't have to sit through it.

This is my first time leaving a comment on your Video under10hours So, Here I go giving out my opinion on This Game of L.A. Rush! So, I may contradict myself on this take But, This is a Underrated Racing Game 🏁🏁🏁 But, At The Same Time it's a decent racing game. I've played this game before on The OG Xbox when I was a OG Xbox Owner in the one year span of 2007-2008 and this was one of the games I've owned in that one year span. But, L.A. Rush was released in October 10th of 2005 in North America But, Here's The problem of this date of this game. This Game was sandwiched together in the middle with two of the most anticipated racing games around that time period in 2005 and them two games being Midnight Club 3 Dub Edition which I've played the regular and the remix But, The regular version was it was released on April 6th of 2005 and Need For Speed Most Wanted which I played too as well as also which it was released on November 15th of 2005 which made L.A. Rush one of the most forgettable racing games because them two where getting more shine and more hype then L.A. Rush making it the most forgettable racing game out the bunch in 2005. But, This game was released a Day before SSX On Tour was released on October 11th of 2005 which I played by the way! But, This Game of L.A. Rush it's a Decent Racing Game But, It has it's Arcade Racing Game Jank into it under10hours! I don't like it's arcade format and Midway is obviously the victim for this for most of their games not overwhelmingly most but most of their games in The 2000's And the Physics in the game is rough and rubbish and the one thing I don't like in this game is in the story mode, If you make a mistake you can't start over the races and that makes me angry😠😡😡 And you can't customize your vehicle and it take away The Player's Freedom to customize your own vehicle and West Coast Hip-Hop Artist of Xzibit's Likeness is not in the game because of course the MTV Licensing and The Likeness of the TV Show of Pimp My Ride is in the game. But, Overall This Game gets a decent but average six out of ten to me in my opinion under10hours. So this was my Opinion and I'm done with this comment!🙂😎😎

My favorite will always be the Dreamcast version of 2049 for more or less memories of the past, because it was the one game I could get my dad to play with me, we would play battle mode and he would camp next to my favorite weapons with the shockwave boombox and ambush me, he would play the levels when I was at school just to learn them and get the drop on me. I got so pissed then but it's one of those things I'd give everything I own to go back to since he passed away. Kept his save file profile named "bad loser" on my vmu. Absolutely need some kind of real honest to God Rush revival. LA Rush was NEVER a San Francisco Rush game. There’s only 1 thing I know that was intended to be a continuation of the series, and that was around 2000 with Hot Rod Rebels, made by Atari. It was in development, but sadly cancelled when Atari’s coin-up division was shut down. Also, police were never really involved in the Rush series the way they’ve always been involved in the NFS series. The only police car ever made in the Rush series was a special paint job in the Dreamcast version of Rush 2049 for the Magnum car. LA rush has a GTA style star system, with NFS style cops.

It's too bad that I was one of those unlucky some who apparently played it back in the day. It was one of those early games that I played on my then-brand-new PS2 that I got for Christmas in 2005, and even played Midnight Club 3 DUB Edition and Burnout Revenge around the same time. These two lines the cops spell out when they're chasing you, such as "Don't make it hard for yourself, driver. Pull over now!" and "Driver, pull over now. Or we will use force." have been stuck well in my head when I played it at the time. Looking at the game now though. Yeah, this game is really a total piece-a-$%!+, especially since it was made during the time when Midway was struggling heavily, leading to their eventual bankruptcy in 2009 and subsequent closure in 2010. Similar to Crime Life: Gang Wars, a terrible game from Konami that you've probably never played and even heard of, considering that unlike the Xbox version, the PS2 version only came out in my region (Europe), I wish I would have played either SVR 2006, or heck, even DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi over these two. But the problem is: I was never interested in either of the two, nor was I ever aware that they even existed, given the heavy destain that I had towards wrestling and DBZ at the time.

I call this one "Midnight Club LA at home." I played this one for the sake of nostalgia, but I realized the problems once I went through LA Rush... starting with the protagonist's yee-yee ass haircut.

I prefer the OG San Francisco Rush. The cars take turns better without flipping over, there are more jumps, and car damage has multiple levels (minor dent vs major dent). Yeah, the environments are all similar looking, but they're still pretty diverse. Rush 2 is the next best, but the cars handle worse, and the damage isn't as detailed. The tracks are more diverse, but there are fewer jumps. Rush 2049 is my least favorite... The cars don't get damaged at all, and the cars aren't even inspired by real vehicles. The handling is better than Rush 2, and the tracks feels most similar to 2. I've never played LA Rush. It seemed like it would taint my memory of the first three.

1:59 He was actually partially correct in saying Burnout wasn't successful(though not the rest of his quote) because this interview was conducted only about 2 months after Burnout 3's release which while it sold like gangbusters, the problem was that it sold way more than both the previous 2 games combined on PS2 alone, I'm guessing Steve was more referring to Burnout 1 and 2 considering the time frame here Though he is a complete liar on the region popularity aspect, if vgchartz is to be believed, Burnout 2 sold more copies in NA than it did in Europe at least on PS2(420K in NA vs 320K in Europe) which is still a small difference so in reality he is lying but I also think he got confused by how in all reality racing games in general always performed better in Europe(despite my very source here is stating otherwise but if you look at other games and the fact that both this game and Burnout were made by British studios as opposed to American ones alongside the countless other European developed racing games) than they did in North America Anyways, I actually have fond memories of this game and quite liked it entirely because of the map, it's properly big, detailed and it's from a time when open world games weren't designed for an audience with ADHD so you could really just explore if you wanted to, it was also quite good in local multiplayer which is where my fondness for the game comes from
