Guys, are you planning to review/compare climbing/summit packs? I.e. Alpha FL45 vs Patagonia Ascentionist vs some new ones?

Good question! As far as a video or blog (blog.weighmyrack.com) review going over what we think are the best climbing packs and why... I think that would be an awesome comparison and we'll look into seeing if we can make that happen. Thanks for the suggestion! We've considered adding packs to weighmyrack.com but because we prioritize comprehensive inclusion of every product in the categories we add to the site, adding packs would require us to develop a criteria for identifying which packs would be included and which packs would not be included, and then going out and finding EVERY product that fits that criteria. For bags, like for apparel, it becomes really overwhelming to think about spending the time to find every niche brand making a pack that fits a certain set of criteria. If you have any suggestions of helpful criteria that would both be helpful in narrowing down the sheer volume of packs needed to gather specs for, and helpful for identifying the design elements or features to filter on, we're all ears! Thanks for the qeustion, Oleg! -Andreas

WeighMyRack an awesome response, as always. It’s also fun for me to consider what criteria would be useful. Maybe ice tool carrying capability would be my inclusion qualifier. Haul bags could be a good future category too.

And sort by waterproofness, size, weight (of course), waist belt and removability, frame sheet and removability. Maybe if it has hydration hose routing or climbing gear loops or haul loops if enough have those features.

@@WeighMyRack Totally see your point and thanks for responding. Would be great if you undertake this endeavour and happy to help. In fact, I've been researching rather intensively on this - and climbed with an unsuitable pack here and there, so have some ideas for the criteria. 1) Weight. Whether you are fast and light or have a long approach, every gram of weight counts. We had to approach with a large 30kg backpack this summer and carrying another 1,5kg of cloth (i.e. the summit pack itself) means less gear, biners, food, etc. 2) Functionality vs volume. A good summit pack should be able to carry a rope securely (inside or outside), ice axe(s), attach crampons outside (cuz when they are wet and icy, you’d rather not stuff it inside the bag). Inside goes the water/food, extra warm layers, extra climbing gear, camera 3) Account for harness and give access to equipment on the harness. This mainly means having or not having a belt on a backpack, having a detachable belt. 4) Load-carry convenience. You still need to approach the climb. Does the bag carry load well (i.e. Osprey Mutant 38), have a belt, adjusted for load. 5) Waterproofness. Of course, you can have a rain cover, but how convenient is it to pull-it out during a climb or walking in crampons with rope looped across your chest. Arcteryx offers a waterproof sack, for one. 6) Durability. The back should be ready to be rubbed against rocks, ice and an occasional ice axe, crampon. This is just off the top of my head from what I've experienced and read.

@@olegshimanskyy4266 Love it. I'm going to look into this some more. It might take longer than you're currently willing to wait :) We have a lot of cool projects on the schedule so this may not get our full attention quite yet. But I think it's definitely worth perusing. Thanks! Andreas

Hi, I am looking for a versatile technical mountaineering boot,so I can use it in high altitude Himalayan expedition, mixed climbing as well as to climb frozen waterfall. Lastly I m confused between the Garmont tower extreme and pumori, though there is a huge price difference. If I buy tower extreme, pls let me know if it is suited to be used in temperature below 20' C,upto 6000 Mtrs. Or if I expend extra to buy Pumori, how much will be the difference (specially the insulation), do u suggest Pumori for extreme environment upto 7000m ? Any other shoe u want to suggest considering price point..pls let me know.(Garmont Tower extreme is available for almost 200 US dollars)

Good question. I don’t feel comfortable making a recommendation since we don’t have personal experience with either boot, or climbing up to 6000 meters. If you are certain you want a Garmont boot, I would reach out to Garmont directly and ask for their recommendation. In my experience the boot companies are very helpful and happy to discuss the best application for each of their products. Sorry I couldn’t be more help. I hope someone else can help clarify :)
