Maria Callas WAS Violetta Vallerys as with all her roles she absolutely became the character, and in my opinion the most beautiful soprano voice of all times being able to sing everything. Her artistry will never be matched. This is spine chilling beautiful.

El magnífico concertante del final del segundo acto, tan admirablemente construido, tan donnizettiano, que suspende la acción, está aquí bien dirigido, sus tempi controlados, acentuado y matizado (el coro desmerece un poco), y la voz de Kraus, el mejor Alfredo Germont del siglo XX con toda seguridad, da muestra de su talento de lírico-ligero y corona el tenso momento, situándose incluso por encima de la voz de Callas. La Traviata de Lisboa, una de las cumbres de la música grabada, un acierto, una suerte, un regalo

Spike Hughes, in his excellent book on some of Verdi's operas, claims that, when the ensemble proper begins, Violetta is relegated to being merely a generic soprano soloist. Callas takes on that challenge and makes the ensemble HERS! Chills down my spine!

Callas was known to have thought Kraus her best Alfredo in terms of her desire to achieve the greatest emotional reality of character. Listen here to his emotional changes which help support and give greater meaning to hers. They were a superb pair in this opera.

Callas voice was controversial but what is beyond dispute the voice combined with her histrionic ability, stage presence and personality made her the greatest opera star soprano of her generation and over 40 years after he death she remains unequalled let alone eclipsed .
