Ermonela Jaho as Violetta Valéry in La traviata. In this aria, Violetta acknowledges her imminent death and prays that God will forgive her and comfort her.
Verdi based La traviata on Alexandre Dumas fils's novel and play La Dame aux camélias, inspired by the life and death of the real Parisian courtesan Marie Duplessis. Verdi offered a more complex and sympathetic portrayal of his heroine than Dumas, highlighting Violetta's noble nature and her devotion to Alfredo. La traviata had an initially lukewarm reception, but after Verdi revised the work in 1854 it became enormously successful. It is currently the most performed opera in the world, and the role of Violetta a favourite for many star sopranos.
Richard Eyre's naturalistic production contrasts the superficial glamour of 19th-century Parisian high life with intimate scenes for Violetta with Alfredo and Giorgio Germont, culminating in the heart-breaking final act. Verdi's sublime score contains some of his most inspired arias and duets, including Violetta's introspective 'Ah fors'è lui' and hedonistic 'Sempre libera', Violetta and Germont's poignant Act II encounter and Alfredo and Violetta's 'Parigi, o cara', in which they dream of a happy future.

At around 2:00 the wooden knob on the bed post came off and she very nicely incorporated that moment of instability into her acting. By the end not only does she convey a woman gravely ill, but also someone in utter despair. Absolutely heartbreaking to watch.

Yes! I had no idea What was awaiting us in a small cinema, EL Prado in Sitges, Spain. Everyone was rivetted to their seats, yet fumbling around for handkerchiefs. This last Act was breathtaking and speechtaking! Nobody found words to express what we had all witnessed! MY GOD, Ermonela was not acting! ... SHE was Violetta, being so integrated in her role! It was dumbfounding! How could she do that?

@@grahambruce4708 Yes, indeed! I have since been researching the life and utter tragedy of the life of Marie Duplessis, who died this very day, 3rd February 2019, 172 years ago, in 1847. RIP. In my researching, over and over again I was reminded of the modern tragedy of Diana, Princess of Wales. ~ Particularly poignant was the sale of her beautiful clothes for charity at her beloved sons' suggestion. ~ Not to settle debts, as in the case of the hapless Lady of the Camellias. Everyone who is fascinated by this tragedy can see on KZbin the stunning interpretation of John Neumeir's "Purple Pas de Deux" by dancers Gudrun Bojesen and Ulrika Birkkjaer from his magnificent ballet. Simply search on KZbin: Lady of the Camellias - Purple pas de deux. I also recommend the exquisite Bolshoi performance of the entire ballet in three separate acts: The Lady of the Camellias - Bolshoi - Act I. ... II ... and III (downloaded by kindness of joya 5 March 2017)

I have watched the broadcast at the cinema and I can tell you it was breathtaking. She is the most persuasive and honest Violetta that I have seen so far. She made me cry for about five times during the performance. The rest of the crew was great as well (Castranovo, Domingo), but she was the true star of the opera. Let“s be clear, she is definitely not the best soprano who ever sang this role, but she is definitely the best actress I have seen playing it so far. she really throws her heart and soul in singing and she will drag you into her beautiful world of emotions. Absolutely astonishing

The only problem with this is that it's so close to perfection that it's hard to imagine seeing it again without comparing it to this, and finding it wanting. I've been lucky to see many of the world's very finest singers in this production over the last 25 years - Gheorghiu, Netrebko and Fleming for starters - and none of them managed this degree of intensity and realism in Addio del Passato. I even heard someone on the way out say that: "it was amazing that she could sing like this when she was so ill!"

I don’t understand why people keep mentioning realism. She is CONSTANTLY moving as she does in all her work. How is this realistic for someone dying of consumption? She should be almost motionless. Of course there’s the suspension of disbelief with regards to the singing, but we have to do it with it the acting too? Her vocal delivery is also frenetic and explosive, bespeaking of huge reserves of energy, not exhaustion. I just don’t get how that adds up to realism.

No other soprano evoked in me a remembmrance to Maria Callas until Ermonela Jaho appeared. Whole her perfomance is deeply felt, lived, not fegined. Her voice can not be easily described as "beautiful", it even has some minimal errors from time to time but always overmastered by a deep rendering of the character she portrays. What an artist! The point of this aria is not just to sing it beatifully. It has to be a last effort of a dying woman, parting with her life. Till now, I have only seen two performances that convey the feeling that Violetta is indeed dying: Angela Gheorghiu's and Ermonela Jaho's. Anna Netrebko, for instance, while magnificent technically is just too much 'alive' if you get what I mean.
