I saw this in the movie “Diva” about 35 years ago and it has been a vivid memory ever since. It causes me to wonder whether there are divine beings here on earth. She was astonishing in every way.

Hers and Callas' interpretations are my favourites. Callas' is the saddest I can imagine, while this one is sung with wholehearted pride in the face of deep loss and defeat. You can identify these emotions very clearly in both singers renditions. Amazing!

This insert into the film was very clever. The soprano here actually has a medium light voice in the formal opera world. This aria is reserved for rather passionate and large sopranos in the formal stage world. Here it is transfixed into a moonlit silvery presentation. Whilst the aria does indeed have a repose like melody and lighter side it has been altered here by a lighter soprano. This scene was a burst of culture for so many North Americans who really did not grow up with opera or much culture. It opened doors further for black opera singers as well.

Your opinion exudes limited comprehension of Wilhelmenia Fernandez, our beautiful soprano who began her studies & experience, simultaneously, in Philadelphia’s Black American churches & our Academy of Vocal Arts. Philly, in North America has a sound appreciation for our fine artists in opera.

I totally agree. IMO, it has the most intriguing storyline I have ever seen in a movie. It is actually two plots that complement each other perfectly and the link that ties them together is Frédéric Andréi the postman.
@tatianak1142 Жыл бұрын
@@georgfriedrichhandel4390 Yes, most intriguing but also extremely beautiful if not chic because of the contrasts, e.g. listening to the perfect opera aria record in the postman's home (garage). Brilliant!!!

@@tatianak1142How this movie never won an Academy Award, or even been nominated, is a travesty. In fact, it didn't win any awards outside of France. IMO. it is the best movie ever made

Saw this in a movie, the name which I do not recall now, at an artsy movie house, Neptune, on "The Ave" at the University of Washington in Seattle, by myself during a matinee. I found myself totally transfixed, my young mind in a state of awe in the face of what I learned to be "beauty" -- a concept mostly foreign to me having grown up in Bellevue where the only culture I was exposed to was 7-11 and video games. Hearing it now, some 37 yrs later, this is quite overwhelming, just as transfixed, no, possessed by the force of the mercilessly beautiful vocals and melody...

This movie is my all-time favourite. I watched it six or seven times in the cinema in the eighties. I´m so very moved by the enthusiasm of the postman for the music and the diva. It´s exactly how I feel for music.

Ebben?

How is one supposed to express such sadness at her passing, while still expressing admiration for her work, all within a simplistic thumbs up / down KZbin-allowed response for your welcome comment. She was SO good. I want to thank her. And that remarkable film stuck with me in so many ways for the next thirty years. So I hope my silent thumbs up for your comment will be properly understood.

With what stupification did this clueless (former) kid from Michigan listen to this aria over and over and over on a cheap plastic cassette when this 'French New Wave' film first emerged out of nowhere. How wonderful to be young and to discover things like this for the first time. I sincerely hope someone reading this now discovered this video today and was blown away too.
