Those powerful winds flamed the flames as well as preventing air water / fire retardants bombers to fly. Here in Western Australia 9 years ago we had multiple fires going for well over a week , nearly two. The blaze was so intense that there was nothing anyone could do. The fires caused their own little weather storms - produced dry lightening that caused more fires. It also prevented the support air craft from helping fight fires. Many older people (a lot of farmers of Italian descent)who had lived in the area for many years stated they had never seen anything like it. One whole town was wiped out.
