My Grandfather was in LA County Fire Dept. when this fire happened in 1961. I was about 3 months old. What I remember him telling me growing up, about wild fires, is they are a natural occurence. The fireman's job is to protect people first, then try to protect structures. Fire needs 3 things, oxygen, a fuel source and ignition. If you can remove any one of these, you can extiguish or prevent a fire. How telling, that the same thing still happens, 63 years later, in almost the exact same area. The big difference is the timeframe. Seasons have changed with global temps. The Santa Ana's were usually in the fall. And we usually should have had some rainfall before January. Just my 63 years of observation.

This film truly is a guide for how to not have a fire disaster. It ought to be useful to elected officials today. In fact, the governor and the mayor ought to be playing that water pressure animation for the media. Honestly, you don't build a water system assuming 70% of the fire hydrants would be needed all at once. That's sort of like building a 200 foot wall around Hawaii, because scientists say a 9.6 magnitude earthquake could create a tsunami that big. But the 2006 tsunami did serve as a wakeup call for most countries around the Pacific. Almost 20 years later, they don't have walls, but they have much better warning systems and plans. There are such huge changes necessary to end the cycle. Maybe 2025 will result in zoning and building changes that will finally be really visible. Sort of like SFO after the 1989 earthquake. Or NOLA after Katrina. At some point a disaster is big enough that the citizenry as a whole will have more influence than the developers who quietly pushed to quash rules outlawing wood roofing, or wider streets, hydrant quantities and locations, and rules for brush and greenery in yards. Drive through those cities and you can see the changes. It's a horrible price to pay to learn the lesson. Maybe.

I googled “residential outside fire suppression systems” and a plethora of companies came up. I know it’s expensive, 20-80 thousand dollars depending on lot and house size, but if people who can buy a 3-20 million dollar home, they can certainly afford the systems especially if they have a pool. The only pool I have is a 330 gallon above ground spa but I have a pump that works just in case. It’s better than nothin. I also live about 1/2 mile from a hillside in So. Cal.

Back in 1999, we bought a new home in antelope acres/Lancaster ca. It is very windy there and in a rural area. The house was fire proof. Entirely stuccoed, even the eaves, no wood exposed. The roof tiles were fire resistant and a sprinkler system inside the home as well. That’s what the new construction, if they rebuild should also be fire proofed.
@thelegion36826 күн бұрын
All of the fire proofing in the world doesn't help unless you can "foolproof" the leadership there today. You understand that the fires raging in California NOW could have been averted? Yes that's exactly right. The "leadership" just secretly diverted the entire water supply to make up losses in the other places in California that were left without any water AFTER their "DEI" "Leadership" decided to divert an entire river of water out and emptied it in the Pacific Ocean..it would seem to the normal every day individual with even half of a functioning brain.. someone somewhere or several someones had a vested interest in seeing to it that there was no water TO be in the hydrants when the fires came to town and #2 the authorities arrested two individuals who were undeniably arsonists and they knew they were but alas'.. no charges were ever to be filed that day in the Court Of DEI because of the color of their skin. This was no natural disaster. A disaster? Yes. But a tragic accident? Certainly not

Do all of the windows in that home have fireproof shutters to keep exterior heat and flames from breaking the glass and allowing heat and fire inside the home to destroy the interior contents, walls and roof trusses or beams and the roof structure before burning down the rest of the exterior walls and garage? Most homes have exterior vents for bathrooms, water heaters, furnaces, kitchen vents, plumbing vents, foundation vents, and roof vents that can allow extreme heat and flame to enter a residential structure. An interior fire sprinkler system for the home truly is a great feature to have for extinguishing fires that start inside, and start small. But, the small gallons per minute of water discharged from sprinkler heads and a home sprinkler system is no match for the large quantity of heat and large flames from a firestorm entering the home, crawlspace or attic of a home.
@HerpDerpNV4 күн бұрын
Just add brush clearance around homes per CALFIRE guidelines, require spacing more spacing between homes, and brush set back requirements along roads/escape routes and you have a winner for actual solutions.

Part of the problem, I believe, is that the water supplying the hydrants is on the same system as the houses. Houses burn, which cause water leaks, and when there are a lot of those it significantly lowers the water pressure. The hydrants being on a separate system would help, although I don’t think it would solve all the problems. Granted, this would be an expensive endeavor. No easy answers, for sure.

@@dastrnad yes - seriously poor planning - but in the 90's cali passed a state law requiring recycled water - billions in bond debt, but most of the money allocated to sewer districts was stolen and the facilities were never built - a lot of water districts did build their facilities - they installed 'purple pipes' for recycled water - the purple pipes were hooked up to fire hydrants - the city of beaumont painted over their purple pipes about 5 years ago - if those neighborhoods were built in the 90's - 2000's - it could be that there was no water in the hydrants because the hydrants are hooked to pipes that lead to a recycled water facility that was never built - yes, cali is 'that dirty' ..

Since they were worried, then I was worried and paying attention. I did not understand most of the words, but I did hear dad say, "Well, I'm glad it's going the other way". He plopped the paper down on the coffee table and they walked out of the room. I went over and looked at the paper and saw a picture taken from up in the sky, looking down on buildings (probably houses) and a wall of smoke on the left-hand side of the picture. I felt sorry for the houses (and their families) in the pictures. I remembered that event, but I could not figure it out that it was the Bel Air Fire until we had the internet.

Chief Dick Crocco was known as a no nonsense leader of the department for 15 years before losing his life falling of a speeding hook and ladder truck that had a flat tire.

I have never lived in an area where the wind had it's own name, and such dread attached to it until I moved to LA. That was way back in 1969, here we are in 2025. Excellent film. Firefighters in nothing more than a uniform. People cannot resist living in the hills and canyons.

Send it to maga so they get some facts about fires in Santa Ana winds and canyons with water pressure issues . The right just does a blame game with disinformation .

@@Geoplanetjane I respectfully disagree. He blames it on global warming. But whether that is the cause or not, to me, is irrelevant. Our leaders are there to help mitigate these sorts of inevitable disasters. And I don’t think he has made this enough of a priority.

They knew water pressure would be lost from the Hydrants back in 1961. And they didn't bother to design the system to prevent that problem in the future. That's poor planning probably a result of cities that are not run by engineers. *Rule #1 in Risk Management: Design for the Worst Case Scenario* . If your freshwater supplies can't handle the Worst Case then you need to Build a permanent system of pumps and pipelines to bring water from the ocean up to special hydrants for ocean-water firefighting. San Francisco did precisely this after the 1906 Earthquake-and-Fire that burned the entire city. Will the cities band together and put in such a system so they can prevent this happening again? Additionally: 1) electrical lines should be put underground 2) Herds of goats used to eat brush constantly 3) Build Salt-Water capable pumps and Fire-Prevention infrastructure to pump in Ocean water to put out fires in the city 4) Stringent Requirements that all homes be constructed according to Strongly Fire-Resistant Code requirements. No more wood-frame structures. They need to be insulated Concrete Forms, which will also be more energy efficient. And no vinyl windows which poison the water supply and give off toxic fumes. The building materials used in homes today can't resist fires near as well as homes 70 years ago could. Plaster interior walls and ceilings are far more fire-resistant and water-resistant. And water-supression systems -- including residential indoor and outdoor sprinklers should be required for fire-supression in these Wildfire-prone areas.

The problem with your post is that it makes too much sense. No time for 'making sense' in 2025.

It was not a lack of total water supply. It was a too massive demand all at once for the water main size to supply and maintain residual pressure in the system. You would need to re-plumb the system with industrial size mains to support the demand of all those homes flowing hoses +sprinklers and FD use of 4" or 5" hydrant connections. Reality: this isn't a water supply issue once you solve the brush clearance and home building material issues.

The whole system including management, building industry, infrastructure etc should be overhauled. It’s surprising it occurs over and over again without any improvements

Oh how well I remember those Santa Ana winds. I always knew that in a fire those winds would whip the flames into an inferno. Thank God I never had to go through that horror. This fire is unbelievable even today. Glad I never lived in that area of L.A.
@THWARTCONTROL3 күн бұрын
The wind direction in the film animation is the same today as it was then. So is the nature of the fire. We need to go full 21st century know how on this problem. The plane and helicopter work has been an outstanding use of new tech, including night runs. You could see it from the Ventura Fwy areas easily!

I remember watching this documentary during fire academy…the fire service learned a ton from this fire…unfortunately the fire service has no control over where and how houses are constructed. One thing is for sure…the Santa Ana winds will blow and while they’re blowing, no “firefighting” is possible….just evacuate and run…
