I agree. They could have told us some of the info that was in the documentary. I get they were trying to keep us up to date with what was currently going on, but they could have use info like this to explain why the things that are happening are happening instead of so many people making crap up. I've actually seen a lot of comments saying this use to never happen and here it is back in the 60's. I don't know why they built a city in pretty much a desert that does not even have it's own water supply.

After watching decades of yearly fires in LA and OC I'm really surprised that they haven't hooked up numerous pump stations to use ocean water for areas such as Santa Barbara, Malibu Pacific Palisades, Laguna ect ect. My Grandfather was in LA County Fire Dept. when this fire happened in 1961. I was about 3 months old. What I remember him telling me growing up, about wild fires, is they are a natural occurence. The fireman's job is to protect people first, then try to protect structures. Fire needs 3 things, oxygen, a fuel source and ignition. If you can remove any one of these, you can extiguish or prevent a fire. How telling, that the same thing still happens, 63 years later, in almost the exact same area. The big difference is the timeframe. Seasons have changed with global temps. The Santa Ana's were usually in the fall. And we usually should have had some rainfall before January. Just my 63 years of observation.

This film truly is a guide for how to not have a fire disaster. It ought to be useful to elected officials today. In fact, the governor and the mayor ought to be playing that water pressure animation for the media. Honestly, you don't build a water system assuming 70% of the fire hydrants would be needed all at once. That's sort of like building a 200 foot wall around Hawaii, because scientists say a 9.6 magnitude earthquake could create a tsunami that big. But the 2006 tsunami did serve as a wakeup call for most countries around the Pacific. Almost 20 years later, they don't have walls, but they have much better warning systems and plans. There are such huge changes necessary to end the cycle. Maybe 2025 will result in zoning and building changes that will finally be really visible. Sort of like SFO after the 1989 earthquake. Or NOLA after Katrina. At some point a disaster is big enough that the citizenry as a whole will have more influence than the developers who quietly pushed to quash rules outlawing wood roofing, or wider streets, hydrant quantities and locations, and rules for brush and greenery in yards. Drive through those cities and you can see the changes. It's a horrible price to pay to learn the lesson. Maybe.

Which is quite unfortunate. LAFD was indeed trying to remind people about the threat of the Santa Ana Winds, in part by posting this a year or so ago. The problems this cyclical weather phenomenon brings once in a while really needed and still needs more solutions and better management of the water resources from the State Gov. This was really a top down failure of leadership in getting important things done.

11 years later I visited writer Robert Bloch at his home. He told me that during this fire he saved his home by pumping out the water from his pool onto his roof & grounds while all around him other homes burned to ashes with many people not home at the time. I walked up there from Sunset Boulevard & back then I was 20 years old & it was very steep & a lot of new vegetation everywhere but you could still see the scars from the fire. Mr. Bloch was very nice to allow me to visit and he is very missed.

It has always amazed me that during wildfires here in California, there are always a high number of burned out homes that have pools in the backyards that always seem full when the media shows up. I googled “residential outside fire suppression systems” and a plethora of companies came up. I know it’s expensive, 20-80 thousand dollars depending on lot and house size, but if people who can buy a 3-20 million dollar home, they can certainly afford the systems especially if they have a pool. The only pool I have is a 330 gallon above ground spa but I have a pump that works just in case. It’s better than nothin. I also live about 1/2 mile from a hillside in So. Cal.

@@donmartin986I’m a scientist and I can tell you for a fact that we had higher temperatures in the 1920’s and 30’s that caused the dust bowl. But that an inconvenient truth for modern climate scam idiots who want more government funding. Weather stations are at airports, 50 years ago in rural areas, now surrounded by concrete and asphalt. That causes higher readings than 50 years ago. There always climate change but there were worse hurricanes in the 1950’s . We’re at the end of a long ice age and cooling period over hundreds of years. This climate scam is for controlling the population and sounds like you bought into it. But I saw the data where Amherst college in England and Penn State faked the data in the it’s to keep their grad students paid, in 1993. The truth is no one knows but there have been higher temperatures throughout history it’s in the fossil records. A underwater volcano puts water vapor in the air and that traps way more heat than CO2. CO2 can hold 4 parts per million of reradiated earth heat, water vapor can trap 400 parts per million of reradiated heat. But they tell you it’s Co2 because they can blame man. But nature is still much stronger than any thing man does outside nuclear arms. Try educating yourself instead of buying into to leftist hype . I hired on as a stewardess for Western Airlines the year after this and we did our training at LAX some of which was conducted by LAFD. They were very professional and thorough and arrived each day in one of those big open engines that look so epic now. On one of my very first flights we had a fire in the cabin of a Boeing 720 and I was grateful for those guys every moment it took to put out that fire. The cause were some young guys heading to basic training in the Army playing with cigarettes. (The "end" came when a full Colonel sitting in the back found out. Not pretty!)

My father worked at LAFD FS36 in San Pedro (LA Harbor) & was dispatched to the Bel Air Fire. He said they would save or try to save a home, quick pick-up the fire hose, then onto the next house or neighborhood. The modern version of the Bel Air Fire is The Camp Fire in Northern California in 2018. In my opinion, brush fires are the most dangerous fire, as there are no 4 walls for containment. I have many pictures of Dad at work on those Crown fire engines!

The Camp was truly horrendous. The opening description of wind in this piece nails what we faced, even in November, although the heat was likely less....but oh, it was so dry. Combined with the canyon winds....Paradise had no chance at all. I listened to the Camp on tbe scanner, helping people get as much accurate information as fast as possible via internet sources. I am absolutely astonished that we still have sane first responders after that. I never, ever, want to hear something like that again.

Back in 1999, we bought a new home in antelope acres/Lancaster ca. It is very windy there and in a rural area. The house was fire proof. Entirely stuccoed, even the eaves, no wood exposed. The roof tiles were fire resistant and a sprinkler system inside the home as well. That’s what the new construction, if they rebuild should also be fire proofed.

All of the fire proofing in the world doesn't help unless you can "foolproof" the leadership there today. You understand that the fires raging in California NOW could have been averted? Yes that's exactly right. The "leadership" just secretly diverted the entire water supply to make up losses in the other places in California that were left without any water AFTER their "DEI" "Leadership" decided to divert an entire river of water out and emptied it in the Pacific Ocean..it would seem to the normal every day individual with even half of a functioning brain.. someone somewhere or several someones had a vested interest in seeing to it that there was no water TO be in the hydrants when the fires came to town and #2 the authorities arrested two individuals who were undeniably arsonists and they knew they were but alas'.. no charges were ever to be filed that day in the Court Of DEI because of the color of their skin. This was no natural disaster. A disaster? Yes. But a tragic accident? Certainly not

Do all of the windows in that home have fireproof shutters to keep exterior heat and flames from breaking the glass and allowing heat and fire inside the home to destroy the interior contents, walls and roof trusses or beams and the roof structure before burning down the rest of the exterior walls and garage? Most homes have exterior vents for bathrooms, water heaters, furnaces, kitchen vents, plumbing vents, foundation vents, and roof vents that can allow extreme heat and flame to enter a residential structure. An interior fire sprinkler system for the home truly is a great feature to have for extinguishing fires that start inside, and start small. But, the small gallons per minute of water discharged from sprinkler heads and a home sprinkler system is no match for the large quantity of heat and large flames from a firestorm entering the home, crawlspace or attic of a home.

Part of the problem, I believe, is that the water supplying the hydrants is on the same system as the houses. Houses burn, which cause water leaks, and when there are a lot of those it significantly lowers the water pressure. The hydrants being on a separate system would help, although I don’t think it would solve all the problems. Granted, this would be an expensive endeavor. No easy answers, for sure.

@@dastrnad yes - seriously poor planning - but in the 90's cali passed a state law requiring recycled water - billions in bond debt, but most of the money allocated to sewer districts was stolen and the facilities were never built - a lot of water districts did build their facilities - they installed 'purple pipes' for recycled water - the purple pipes were hooked up to fire hydrants - the city of beaumont painted over their purple pipes about 5 years ago - if those neighborhoods were built in the 90's - 2000's - it could be that there was no water in the hydrants because the hydrants are hooked to pipes that lead to a recycled water facility that was never built - yes, cali is 'that dirty' ..

I was born in February of 1959. I was 18 months old when this happened, but I remember it. I could walk and understand, but I could not talk. I remember being in the living room, standing, and probably holding on to the coffee table. I can see it in my memory from that angle. I was by the couch and mom and dad were standing by the fireplace. They were worried, and talked about a "terrible fire" They were looking at the front of the newspaper. Since they were worried, then I was worried and paying attention. I did not understand most of the words, but I did hear dad say, "Well, I'm glad it's going the other way". He plopped the paper down on the coffee table and they walked out of the room. I went over and looked at the paper and saw a picture taken from up in the sky, looking down on buildings (probably houses) and a wall of smoke on the left-hand side of the picture. I felt sorry for the houses (and their families) in the pictures. I remembered that event, but I could not figure it out that it was the Bel Air Fire until we had the internet.

Exact script of the current situation, the strong typical wind, fire jumps, fire fighters attack with formulated, well versed plan, water runs out in particular areas, under control then lost again. This is everything we have followed in real time except todays crisis should have been expected and planned for after years of knowledge and no one died in 1962. This is truly amazing , forces one to understand just how incompetent and corrupt todays political officials are. 63 years ago they accomplished the job far better than those in charge today, not in regards to the fire depts. but the leadership of mayor, city council and gel head Newson !

Governor had 100,000000 to work on this problem. He should have changed out old wires and hired out forest cleaning so fires would not have fuel. And drained reservoirs should have been full. The mayor Bass what a fool cutting almost 18 million away from fire department , they need to be held accountable. Poor leadership

No wonder the insurance companies are looking at getting out of California, they are some of the best statisticians in the world, they look at all sides of underwriting policies. I was 15 yrs. old and lived in California in 1961 and do not remember any of this, no KZbin then. We moved to the town of Paradise from Socal in 1960 and lived there much of my life. We always knew Paradise was a fire trap, limited access and egress, heavy vegetation. Thanks Mike, stellar job!

However because of the masson construction in the historic district, city wide destruction by fire is no more. Still sad to lose two... Even one historic building.

Amazing how no one seems to have listened to the fire experts ...and now as we speak it's happening AGAIN. I remember it like it was yesterday ... terrible... in 1971 I became a Fire Fighter there in Southern California... we as professionals tried to explain to public and government officials that if they didn't change there policies and regulations that it would most assuredly be repeated over and over again... the Malibu and laguna canyon fires should have been just another example that drastic measures should be taken... but again we were ignored... so here we go again... breaks my heart... thoughts and prayers..

They knew water pressure would be lost from the Hydrants back in 1961. And they didn't bother to design the system to prevent that problem in the future. That's poor planning probably a result of cities that are not run by engineers. *Rule #1 in Risk Management: Design for the Worst Case Scenario* . If your freshwater supplies can't handle the Worst Case then you need to Build a permanent system of pumps and pipelines to bring water from the ocean up to special hydrants for ocean-water firefighting. San Francisco did precisely this after the 1906 Earthquake-and-Fire that burned the entire city. Will the cities band together and put in such a system so they can prevent this happening again? Additionally: 1) electrical lines should be put underground 2) Herds of goats used to eat brush constantly 3) Build Salt-Water capable pumps and Fire-Prevention infrastructure to pump in Ocean water to put out fires in the city 4) Stringent Requirements that all homes be constructed according to Strongly Fire-Resistant Code requirements. No more wood-frame structures. They need to be insulated Concrete Forms, which will also be more energy efficient. And no vinyl windows which poison the water supply and give off toxic fumes. The building materials used in homes today can't resist fires near as well as homes 70 years ago could. Plaster interior walls and ceilings are far more fire-resistant and water-resistant. And water-supression systems -- including residential indoor and outdoor sprinklers should be required for fire-supression in these Wildfire-prone areas.

It was not a lack of total water supply. It was a too massive demand all at once for the water main size to supply and maintain residual pressure in the system. You would need to re-plumb the system with industrial size mains to support the demand of all those homes flowing hoses +sprinklers and FD use of 4" or 5" hydrant connections. Reality: this isn't a water supply issue once you solve the brush clearance and home building material issues.
