The water going to the hydrants is a supply issue. IE reservoir or pump issue. Not the hydrant itself. Learn about water supply systems. It will help you understand this.

The hydrants are fine, but hardly any system in the world can take this many fire hoses without lising pressure. In addition, the broken pipes of destroyed houses leak loads of water. An adequate system could be built, but would have had everybody screaming about reckless overspending....for something that had never happened. But with increasing extreme events, the standards (and spending) may well increase.

Not even remotely true. Please fact check prior to commenting. Hollywood Fire Station 82 specifically has the Rosenbauer electric fire trucks. In America you have these electric fire trucks currently in service: Pierce Volterra, E-ONE Vector, Rosenbauer RT, and possibly a few Volvo FL Electric fire trucks. Consider that hybrid electric fire trucks actually make more sense than most electric vehicles due to the environment they work in. No critial air filters to clog up with ash and no radiator that must always have COOL air flowing over it to dissipate the waste heat from internal combustion. Plus no hot exhaust to potentially ignite even more grass fires. An EV fire truck can essentially be a sealed and insulated box on wheels.

The fire trucks could easily have developed faults enroute, especially with such a long journey, a small delay like this,also allows the crews a brief rest to get ready for the deployment, in addition to this it gives fire commanders a chance to get more information about the capabilities of the trucks (they all vary),the crews qualifications and training, as well as briefing the crews on the fire, planning where best to deploy them, how best to use them and the equipment carried which again can vary, it also gives them a chance to restock consumables for example ration packs and so on, another thing is that this gives a chance for the crews to be staged rather than sending everyone to the same location at the same time, which would be pandemonium and chaos, I suspect that by doing it this way the crews actually deploy quicker and more safely rather than causing a gridlock of fire trucks, whoever thought of this policy was a absolute genius!

I'm a mechanic. These trucks already have to pass DOT requirements just to be on the road where they are from. And the claims that driving a few hundred miles could have caused wear and tear are ridiculous! Again, these are commercial vehicles, and the platforms they are built on are designed to travel more than 1k miles a day, day after day. Being an emergency, minor things like a light bulb out or a small oil leak could be ignored until after they return from service.

I had an Amazon delivery driver tell me that one of Amazon's large warehouses was getting the all new electric delivery vans. But, when they started to figure the electrical demand for all the required chargers, the local electric company engineers told Amazon the electrical demand would consume all of the local grids capacity. Driver did like his delivery van , but it only has a range of 150 miles. Also stated a power failure can really throw sand in their well oiled machine and bring things to a screeching halt.

Inspection between a 200 mile trip and going into danger is common sense. Fire trucks get inspected all the time, for obvious reasons, even with local action. After the trip, the 45 minutes is about what the crews will need for a toilet break and a situation briefing.

Be fair, an old battery or already partially ash clogged air filter really could be disastrous when fighting fires with wind so high that embers are lighting more fires behind you. You need to be able to retreat instantly and any delay can be, well, you're cooked.

Listen, a brand new fire truck can breakdown. It happens. I have a friend who used to deliver new fire trucks and occasionally they would breakdown on the way. My point is doing this inspection does not insure a truck will not breakdown while in use. I have never heard of such a thing being required when there is clearly an emergency at hand. Better to make sure they were mechanically sound before hitting the road and breaking down somewhere. Normally, the USFS will inspect contractor wildland firefighting equipment for safety and operational readiness before letting check - in on big project fires out west. This will help remove some liability against the government or claims being filed by contractors for faulty equipment breaking on a fire.

@@ArmchairIC Fire apparatus is inspected on a regular basis whether it is used or not. That is a standard all fire departments use. And every piece of commercial equipment- including fire trucks- must pass a DOT check before being driven on the road. Anyone with a CDL knows what that is about. If they found any actual problems, it would be something like a light bulb that failed during the drive, which certainly isn't going to keep it from being used to fight a fire. Tires, brakes, and other safety equipment is checked on a regular basis, and a 500 mile drive isn't going to suddenly make brakes or tires dangerous.
