Wow, that's actually very accurate. Rats and mice have spacial awareness. If they are exposed to an environment, even once, they can memorize their surroundings with all there senses almost instantaneously. That's why a mouse/rat exposed to a maze for the first time will complete it at the same time as one familiar with the same maze.

I actually a pair of rats from a behavior study, precisely because they refused to cooperate with the students and staff doing the study. They were testing how competition with reward affects social behavior. they would have the rats compete in pairs to complete a task, and the first to finish, would get a food reward. These two never cooperated the with the task. I took them home, because as a college student, i was kind of lonely, and couldnt have a dog or cat at my apartment at the time. These two got along great. one male, one female. They never fought, and when they had pups (i was kind of an idiot, and didnt really think that through) the male, despite the normal behavior of rats, helped with the care and upkeep of the pups. He washed them, and stimulated their bladders and bowels, like the female would normally do. I told the professor in charge in the behavior study i got them from, and he told me that it 'wasnt possible', it was too 'aberrant' of a behavior. So i invited him to come and see it for himself. the rats did i said, but when they saw the professor, they got angry, and both huddled down over the 12 little pups. it was hilarious. I could handle these rats, and their still furless young, but if the professor reached into the cage, they tried to bite him.

I realize it's supposed to be a bigger life lesson. Although the researchers would keep feeding the maze rats because they want to keep seeing results from the maze rat and stop feeding the lever rats because they don't really need them I guess.

As someone who run a vivarium and actively do experiment on them. No, rat are way better off living in captivity. They just die way to easily in the wild. It is hard to name animals that doesn't actively kill rat for one reason or another. Have you seem deer stumps on rat and then eat it?
