Amazing Altadighi
Altadighi is located in Dhamoirhat Upazila, Naogaon district, near the Bangladesh-India border, amid the largest Sal Forest of North Bengal.
The lake was created and named after an incident.
King Bishwanath Jagaddal dug this lake to solve the water crisis back then.
The area of this lake is 43 acres.
It is 1100 meters long and 500 meters wide.
It is said that king Bishwanath Jagaddal ruled the region in 1400.
There was a severe water crisis during the king’s reign.
Cultivation became impossible on the dehydrated fields and lands.
One day, the queen dreamt that a lake would have to be dug as far as she could walk from a certain point until her feet bled.
To lessen the suffering of people, the queen decided to walk.
She was accompanied by some attendants.
The queen walked so far that her attendants thought it would be impossible for the king to dig such a large lake.
Then, one of her attendants poured some ‘Alta’ (red dye) on her feet and cried out, “My Queen, your feet are bleeding.”
The queen sat down after hearing this.
King Bishwanath dug a lake up to that length.
The lake was then instantly filled with pure water.
It was named ‘Altadighi’ as the Alta (red dye) was poured on the queen’s feet.
This lake is surrounded by a vast forest, which is known as Altadighi National Park.
The banks of the lake are mountain-high, covered in Sal Forest and various tree species.
The sight of termite mounds around Sal trees is fascinating.
Other trees like Giant Crape Myrtle, Shirish, Amla, Golder Shower tree, Red Silk Cotton, etc. besides Sal are available.
Climbers like Wild Sarsaparilla, Five Leaf Yam, Indian Sarsaparilla, etc. can be found there.
There are also various types of wildflowers.
And colorful butterflies are seen flying on these flowers.
This forest houses different types of ferns and fungus.
Blue-throated Barbet, Owl, Woodpeckers, Bee-Eater, Chestnut-Tailed Starlings, Weaver, Parrots, and Indian Paradise Flycatchers are common among birds.
Animals such as jackals, squirrels, mongooses, etc. are also seen.
The ancient beauty, Altadighi, has become a tourist spot.
The biodiversity of the Sal Forest area is threatened due to the destruction of wildlife habitat.
Thus, Altadighi will turn into a fully human settlement one day.
Therefore, with the support of the authorities and raising awareness, the traditional Altadighi can be re-established.
