Thank you sir. How inspirational to see that the "greats" are not above practicing relentlesly, and with sharp focus, on minute details. It shows that talent is not just some god-gifted mystery thing! I am not even a lute player (amateur harpsichordist) but this is super interesting to me nonetheless…

Very instructive and inspirational. Daily routine matters a lot. I learned a lot. I may also practice in the same way. Rome was not built over night. Thank you for sharing, Mr. Diaz-Latorre. Paul

Go for it! The most important thing is to find a teacher near you. Almost all teachers will have an old/spare instrument you can rent/borrow or they can hook you up with someone else who does. Then if you like it, you can always buy one yourself. Or do like I did, and build a Baroque lute yourself! If you've ever built a guitar or mandolin or similar instrument, you'll be able to make a pretty good lute. Funnily enough, if you build your own, the most expensive part will be the strings!
@euledj79 Жыл бұрын
@@basgerritsen9669Unfortunately the thickness gauge a bending iron and a belgian stone are quite expensive. Wich tools did you use for your first instrument? Did you substituted any with more simpler tools?
@basgerritsen9669 Жыл бұрын
@@euledj79 to substitute a bending iron, I actually just heated a pot on my stove and then turned it upside down to use as a bending surface! With a smaller pot you can bend tighter radii. It's not ideal but works good enough for a personal instrument. Instead of a thickness gauge I got Prethicknessed wood for modeling and I would measure thicknesses with some old callipers or pre made spacers wherever possible. I'm not quite sure what a Belgian stone is, but a sharpening stone for your tools can be had for very little money. All you really need is a chisel, plane, saw, drill and maybe a file. Use wood of close to the appropriate size everywhere you can. Nice straight and dry wood can often be bought at model building shops. Btw you can also get a bending iron from china for around €100 or so. In the end i built my lute+case for less than €500 I guess, the strings were the most expensive part by far.

Try the sarod, with a top of deerskin: you change the tuning of one string, and that of all the other 22 changes.

great that you also play 995 on a 13-course Instrument. I simply tuned the 13th course down to G cause A is seldom used. Ist the mechanical practice with a metronome for "tres vite" the most effective way to learn it? Would you prefer to learn it first without dynamics/phrasing and add it after you are in right tempo? Do you dampen the bases a lot in your final version? Mascardi e.g. dampens almost every bass-note. Dampening while playing legato with the fingers simulanously is a technical challenge for me but it seems that you have to do often in some parts... Thanks for this insight in your routine!
@laberintosingeniosos Жыл бұрын
Hi, I do the same, put down the 13th. I try with phrasing from moment one. Dynamics, in this kind of music, I don't use much... About dampening the bass, if one uses gut, the not damped bass bother much!! less. The mix of the harmonics with gut is much less conflictive than with artificial strings.
@euledj79 Жыл бұрын
@@laberintosingeniososI appreciate that you had some of your precious time to answer me! With your method I make some development. When I play with the final tempo its less necessary to damp my Nylgut CD-strings all the time. This piece is such a fun to play...almost like a never ending perpetuum mobile. Will you join Jordi Savall for the upcoming concerts with St. John Passion in germany in march? I would be glad to see you live. Thanks!
