I had the same army shovel. I loved that thing . I was on my way to China when I hit a waste line . True story, the trouble I got in . 😂. I picked it up at the Englishtown flea market in NJ . I use to go there with my dad when I was a kid . Great times .

Fantastic job on the trench shovel and hammer. I picked up a trench shovel at a poor man's flea market last year. It is fully functional - just need cleaning up. We don't see very many things set out to the curb in my area in Oregon, so the pickin's are few and far between. I have started doing restorations on hammers because of your influence. It is quite rewarding to bring a tool back from the trash can and make it as good a new... Thank you for the video encouragement.

The last white suites I’ve seen were on Clarke Gable, Humphrey Bogart, and Carey Grant in the movies. I always thought of it like getting white tennis shoes - it was always a competition among school mates to step on them as soon as possible!

Great video John. I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I wore a white suit to my wedding back in 1986. I thought I was such a trend setter too! My dad used to paint anything metal with “red lead” but it was a primer like you see under the bottom of ships. That filler you were using is known as “spot putty” here in Australia but it has to go on a painted surface so my prep is filler or bondo, followed by primer and then spot putty. I think the only thing left to do with the entrenching tool is give it to some kids to play with it in a sand pit for an hour to add some patina. It’s amazing how a little love completely changed that hammer, well done. Cheers mate, Stuart 🇦🇺

With the Bell System being everywhere for many years those hammers should be somewhat easy to find. Too bad the shovel was frozen making it unfoldable, but as a display piece it turned out beautifully. Caught up on last weeks episodes after travel, just great! The last time I wore white clothes was at Stroehmann Brothers bakery doing summer work from school. Every shift end they were filthy, the four sets they gave us were worn out from washing by the time school started and the summer holiday season eneded. My mother was relieved she didn’t have to look at them in the washer.

I remember catching a break in Infantry Training School, we were sent to a hilltop and told to “Dig In”. I looked around and there was a fallen tree branch. I thought “That would make some good concealment so I went to move the branch and there was a perfectly dug fighting hole. I guess the last guy up here didn’t want to fill it in when he finished and covered it up with the branch. I threw some fresh dirt around and placed the branch in front of the hole. About an hour later the instructor came over and said “Excellent job, looks made to order” and smiled. I swear to this day he knew that hole was there and threw me a bone. 😃👍🇺🇸

Thanks for the video sir, like the way the hammer came out. As far as wearing white, friends I have, dark grey or black, because the profession I/we were in, even our recreation time, if you wore anything white when you started, it was pretty much black when you finished, and you would be a target for some kind of mischievous behavior resulting in a white to black wardrobe color change, great fun bunch of guys, I miss them.

John, it's funny with the color of the trenching tool. It looked grey to me at first. Love the hammer even if the stain is a bit dark...lol I think maybe the angle of the small end of the hammer is for the linemen hitting the stamping tool. If the plate is already on the pole, they're around eye level so using the hammer one would hold it high. I'm probably wrong but that wouldn't be for the first time...today George

Bell System tools aree the greatest. When I use to work for a living stamping die sections was part of the job. We used the hydraulic press. With a block of steel cut so the punches stayed upright you could press all the numbers at once. 1 to 3 tons depending on how many digits were used. Quick and easy. Never used one of the wheel type punches. Pretty cool tool. Thanks for another great show.

Thanks for the tip on the glazing putty - looks like a really useful product. The Hammer looks great, you have great skill with the grinder and flap wheel ! I have a regular club hammer around this weight that is surprisingly useful in the workshop - using and managing its weight rather than pounding with it can give really controlled blows for carving and chisel work ! There's a great video on this from "The English Woodworker" titled "Best Mallets For Hand Tool Woodworking" - worth checking out !

I think the ‘no white after Labor Day’ rule was observed more by ladies than by guys. Women would switch to dark colored purses and move their white shoes to the back of the closet. I remember a square dance caller who was popular in southern New England about 30 years ago whose trade mark was wearing a white suit. As a kid I had school clothes which had to stay nice, and play clothes that I would change into after my homework was done or that I would wear all day long on Saturday and school vacation days. For most of my childhood the play clothes were a white tee shirt and dungarees. I don’t remember Mom ever using the word jeans. My dad was expected to wear a suit and tie at work even though he spent one to two hours walking around the factory floor checking in with the foremen. One Saturday when I was in High School, we went to Jacoby’s Mens Store in South Norwalk be cause Dad needed a new raincoat. Dad got the rain coat. He also wound up buying every long sleeve dress white shirt they had in his size and two suits that were on sale because they were going out of style, just like the plain white shirts.

Great video, ScoutCrafter! 👍🏻 The e-tool turned out great even if you can’t fold it. I have one that belonged to my late grandfather that somebody painted ScoutCrafter red long before I got it, but it’s badly worn and in need of restoring to its original olive glory. 😅 The Bell Systems hammer tuned out very nice as well. Question about the glazing putty: you mentioned it was sometimes called red lead, was that a brand name or did it used to contain lead like many old paints?
@ScoutCrafter
@ScoutCrafter Жыл бұрын
Red Lead was a form of Lead Oxide and like all things that work good did have some safety concerns- It came in a powder you would mix into a paint- the key is not to inhale the red oxide powder or ingest it. 😃👍

Too bad about the aluminum nut on the entrenching shovel. The combination of aluminum, steel, and moisture ensure you'll never get it apart without destroying it. Japanese motorcycle engine covers were notorious for this. It didn't help that JIS headed fasteners were mistaken for Phillips pattern screws that resulted in their normal chewed out appearance>

Hi Al, I believe these rotary stamps are made for lighter material. The solid hardened punches are heavier duty but stamping any hard steel is either going to dull the punch or chip it. Most tools a punched before they are hardened. 😃👍

Luckily I have had the opportunity to visit many parts of this beautiful country. One thing I have encountered most everywhere is the stark difference between urban and suburban areas. I have noticed that most large cities have a negative effect of the State they are in. Almost every state has nice suburban areas only to be effected in a negative way by the cities that they encompass. NY, Chicago, LA, Detroit, Philadelphia, Washington…. It has been this way for years. Everyday I search for a new place to call home but it isn’t easy because every state is effected by a heavily populated city.

I think the Navy switches to the Navy Blue uniforms after Labor Day? See summer white service or “milkman’s”. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniforms_of_the_United_States_Navy
